It Could Have Been Anyone - Part Two

By Cal Bishop

Author's Note

I wrote Part One of this as a one-off for the Halloween contest, but I enjoyed the characters and premise so much that I decided to keep going. Part Two picks up right where Part One left off. There isn't any actual sex here, this is more plot-moving and character-establishing, but I hope there's enough innuendo and implication to keep the characters' (and readers') interest. Don't worry, the next chapter is coming soon and there's plenty of sex in it.

After the Halloween Party

"You were right, you know," she said. "Your costume is better than I thought at first. Why, under that mask, at the party, it could have been anyone!"

They both laughed.

They looked at each other silently. Eventually the silence became awkward.

Finally Ben cleared his throat, his eyes still locked on hers, and said, "Actually, there's something I should tell you..."

"It wasn't you the first time, was it," she said.

"No. How did you know?"

"Does it matter?"

"No," he said after thinking about it for too long. "Ali, I'm so sorry, it was just supposed to be a stupid joke that got out of hand, I don't know what I was thinking but it doesn't matter, I never should have put you in that position, you must be furious..."

She put up a hand to stop him. "I'm not mad," she said by reflex. "Well, I take that back. I'm kind of mad! You tricked me into having sex with someone I had just met that day! What were you thinking?"

He shrugged. "I wasn't thinking. I swear! I didn't plan it, it was just a stupid... game. I had no idea what would happen, and Gene didn't either, he tried to switch back with me, but by that point, it was too late to stop!"

She winced in frustration, but also a little guilt.

I did get a little crazy myself, and definitely more aggressive than usual

. "That's ridiculous... but I believe that you didn't plan it, and no one got hurt, except maybe their bedspread."

Alicia chuckled ruefully and hugged Ben. "

You

aren't mad, are you? I did have sex with someone else, after all. I have to admit, I kind of suspected it was someone else while I was dancing with him. I mean, we had already been feeling each other up, but it was before I took anything off."

He frowned, then scoffed and hugged her back. "No, I'm not mad. It doesn't matter who had touched what when you figured it out, it's still a position I shouldn't have put you in. No pun intended. And, honestly, it was so fucking hot I don't even mind!"

That drew her up short. "What?"

He blushed and waved his hands in front of him like he was trying to shape the words manually. "I mean, it looked amazing. I saw the whole thing from the bathroom. I snuck out into the hall right before you went to clean up. I never thought about what Gene calls 'the lifestyle' until now, and, I mean, you're always hot, but seeing you fucking someone else was the hottest thing I've ever seen!"

She was disturbed to find that she knew what he meant. Every element of the party had been strange, the whole evening had been erotically charged, it had felt all along like anything could happen...

She found herself getting hot and bothered while Ben continued talking. "It was so intimate even though I was in another room, I could see how passionate you both were like I was there but I could only touch myself, it was like, like..."

"A dream," she finished.

"Sure," he agreed.

She shook herself. "Well, yeah, I guess it was hot. I mean, of course it was. I have to admit, the sex was good."

That's putting it lightly

, she blushed. "But lifestyle? Come on. Doing that again would be a horrible idea. What if Vivian gets jealous?"

"I don't think that's likely to be a problem," Ben laughed. "Didn't you just tell me about her and Frank?"

"OK, well, what about you?" Alicia asked. "Are you sure it'll never bother you at all, seeing me with your childhood friend? Or forget about jealously, what about the opposite problem? What if someone develops... feelings?"

Ben said nothing.

"It was an accident that turned out well, and that's it," Alicia finished. "I'm going to go take a shower now. Do you want to join me?"

"Sure."

She took the Sally wig off first and scratched her head, giving her light brown, shoulder-length hair some long-overdue freedom.

The shower took a long time. As always, Ben enjoyed getting handsy. She appreciated his help getting the blue off her C-cup breasts, even though it wasn't strictly needed, but they were both tired.

It was well after 2 AM when they finally got into bed. He shut off the lights and spooned her and she expected they'd both go straight to sleep. But when she closed her eyes, she saw someone in a Batman mask. She didn't know if it was Ben or Gene, and she realized she was getting wet. She rubbed her ass against Ben's crotch and he responded.

"I thought you were tired," he said.

"Well, maybe not too tired," she answered with a giggle as she shrugged off her pajamas and turned to embrace him.

A few days later, over dinner, Ben asked her, "So I wanted to ask, what would you say to a double date with Gene and Vivian? We could take them to that new Filipino place, Purple Patch, and see what develops."

"Develops? What's going to develop?" Alicia asked with an arched eyebrow.

"Probably nothing. All I'm saying is, if something does develop, I think we can be flexible," Ben said smoothly.

Alicia narrowed her eyes, suspicious of how smoothly he said that and whether the double entendre was intentional, but she agreed.

They wound up getting reservations for that Friday. Alicia wore a gray sweater dress; no cleavage, but it was elegant enough for the restaurant, and tight enough to display her curves.

Alicia and Ben arrived first; no surprise, since it was in their neighborhood, but the other couple was only a few minutes late. Vivian was wearing a tight green blouse, once again showing off her cleavage, and businesslike slacks.

How often are her hookups mutual things with Gene, like Ben seems to want this to be?

Alicia wondered.

As opposed to just waving her tits around a bar and seeing who's interested?

Gene wore a light gray suit, white shirt, and striped tie, like had just come from the office despite the hour. Alicia and Ben stood to hug them when they arrived.

Gene sat opposite Alicia, Vivian opposite Ben. Alicia felt awkward, partly because the restaurant was crowded, partly because of the gap between how well she knew them and what she knew about their sex lives.

Vivian didn't give her much chance to dwell. As soon as they sat down, she gushed, "I've been looking forward to this. Gene hasn't stopped talking about you and him at the Halloween party!"

Alicia froze, eyes wide, but her mind was racing a mile a minute.

She's smiling. Eyes twinkling; if the smile is fake, she deserves an Oscar. The guys are both smiling, not worried. The people at the table next to us are absorbed in their conversation; they didn't notice anything odd. I guess what she said was vague enough. The people behind them have their phones out. Could be listening.

"I'm glad to hear that," she said slowly. So slowly she worried it sounded odd.

"I haven't stopped talking because you haven't stopped asking," Gene said easily. He was studying the menu as he spoke. "I told her about it the following day - I had to, that's the rule," he looked up at Alicia matter-of-factly as he continued, "And I guess it's a bit weird

how

it happened, so that was a story, but even after that, she's loved hearing all the, you know, little details."

He shrugged, maybe apologizing, maybe not even that, maybe just acknowledging that people might have opinions about them having sex.

She had a million questions, trying to figure out the odds of a hair-pulling cat-fight or other public freakout breaking out at the table, wondering about what this man she barely knew had shared with his wife about her, but she was most curious about one question that also seemed safest. "What was weird about how it happened?"

"Oh God," Ben said, and his head hit the table with a clunk.

Vivian burst out laughing. "They were testing the costume! Ben just wanted to see if his costume was good enough to fool you if someone else wore it! He had no idea what would happen!"

Alicia furrowed her brow, repeated what she had heard to herself mentally two or three times, repeated the events of the party to herself, and turned to Ben, still with his head on the table, and asked, "What?"

Gene was chuckling by now, and Ben too, judging by how his shoulders were shaking. "Sorry dude, she's my wife and I'm a bad liar," Gene said flippantly to Ben. That just made Vivian laugh harder.

They were interrupted by the waiter coming to collect drinks orders. Alicia took the opportunity to collect her thoughts. Gene ordered the restaurant's specialty margarita, Vivian ordered a Cosmo, Ben had a gin sour, and Alicia - last because she hadn't looked at the menu yet - had a glass of white wine.

After he had left, Alicia turned to Ben and asked, pointedly, "Honey, do I understand correctly? That little mix-up at the party happened because you wanted to test... your costume?"

Gene and Vivian were both laughing now. Ben looked off into the distance, paused, then finally said, "OK, but I can explain: I am not smart."

Alicia couldn't help laughing at that either, and not even Ben himself.

When everyone had recovered, Alicia turned to Vivian and said, "I have to admit that wasn't my first surprise here tonight. I thought this whole thing would go a lot worse from the start."

Vivian looked puzzled. "Why? I thought Ben told you about our little arrangement," she asked, leaning over the table, getting as close as she could to Alicia.

Ben nodded. "He did," Alicia said. "But it's still hard to get my head around. You two are happily married, but you also just... hook up with random people?" She ended in a whisper.

"Sometimes," Vivian said in a surprisingly normal tone. "Sometimes we go on dates and hit it off."

"Actually, there's one couple we go on double dates with a lot," Gene cut in.

Vivian nodded. "Yeah, Barry and Brandy, you might have met them at the Halloween party."

"They have a kid, so they'll get a babysitter for the night, and we'll get dinner and drinks like this," Gene continued. "Maybe dancing, maybe a movie. Normal enough, right? The only difference is, at the end of the night when other people would go their separate ways, we have more options."

The waiter arrived with their drinks. They said cheers and clinked glasses, and ordered dinner.

Vivian was the first to speak after that. "Sometimes our double dates with them start out

just

like this one," she said to Alicia, leaning over the table, her eyes glowing.

Ben sat up straight with a jerk and cleared his throat for no apparent reason. Vivian shifted her grin to him.

Did she just do something to him under the table?

Alicia wondered.

Right here?

Gene winced. "Give them a break," he said to Vivian. Then, to Alicia, "I apologize. I didn't break any, you know, official rules," he waved between him and Vivian as he spoke, "but I did give her less information up front than she normally gets. So she's interested."

"You didn't give me much 'information up front' either!" Alicia laughed.

He shrugged and grinned at her lazily, like his mind was on something else, maybe on what they did last night.

She couldn't help thinking about that herself, picturing them together openly, with no masks or dreamlike Halloween decorations.

What would he be like in bed if he doesn't have to pretend to be someone else? What would I be like if I'm with someone who I don't know as well as Ben?

She blushed.

Ben looked back and forth between them but said nothing. She took his hand under the table. He put it on his leg, not quite in his lap but not far away.

Vivian looked between them and arched an eyebrow. Alicia felt something moving between Ben's legs. Vivian's foot. She met Alicia's eyes and smiled. Ben breathed hard.

Is she really doing that with my boyfriend, right here?

Alicia wondered.

Is that bitch crazy?

But Vivian nodded her head towards Gene.

Reminding me of what I did with him. Fair enough. Or... inviting me to do the same?

Unfortunately, Alicia was wearing shoes she couldn't just kick off under the table.

Discussion continued and turned to more normal topics as their orders arrived, and the under-the-table play died down a bit. Alicia had to admit that most of her doubts about Gene and Vivian were dispelled. They seemed like a happy couple, normal and communicative, except that they apparently hooked up with other people in addition to each other.

Conversation at the restaurant was discreet. In a normal tone of voice, Vivian and Gene wouldn't say anything more than "playing" or "hanging out." Smiles and arched eyebrows made their intent perfectly clear.

When the checks came, Ben looked at Alicia and said slowly, "So how would the two of you like to come back to our place for another drink?"

Alicia said nothing.

Just drinks, right? Do we have a signal for anything else? Do we have a signal for 'they must leave now'?

She tried to ask him those questions and many others telepathically but he apparently didn't get the message.

Gene and Vivian, though, weren't so troubled. "Sure!" they said at the same time after a quick glance.

It was a short walk back to their apartment and they walked quickly due to the cold. Alicia tried to ask Ben about ground rules, but she couldn't separate him from Gene, reminiscing, and Vivian was clinging to her arm, gushing about one restaurant after another she had been to in the neighborhood.

"What can I get you all?" Ben asked when they got back to the warm apartment. "We've got IPAs, lagers, a bottle of white wine... we've got a few bottles of liquor, but I'm not sure about mixers..."

"White wine sounds great," Vivian said.

"I'll have an IPA," Gene said.

Alicia put her hand up. "Make that two." She thought Ben's gaze lingered on her at that.

What? I drink IPAs now and then! I didn't get it because Gene did, and what's wrong with that if I did?

"So we've been talking a lot about our lifestyle," Gene began after they all clinked glasses. "Is there anything else you'd like to know, now that we're more comfortable? Or do?"

Alicia took a drink, snorted at his directness, and had a coughing fit, nearly making a mess of her beer.

The other three laughed. She blushed.

"Sorry, I did NOT time that well!" Gene said, putting a hand on Alicia's shoulder. "I was just thinking, we clearly clicked at the party, this double date has gone well, you two are clearly curious about our lifestyle, I thought you might like to try it out - without any costumes or tests involved, this time, and with both of our partners getting to watch."

They were all staring at her. Ben looked hopeful. Vivian looked hungry. Gene, though, just looked friendly, maybe even concerned.

I wouldn't be either a crush or another notch on the belt to him

, she realized.

He gets plenty of sex at home, and with other people too, it seems. He's just inviting us to join the fun and games.

She thought about it.

The sex was great, and it would be nice not to have to worry about what's going on, what Vivian or anyone else would do, right? Hell, she and Ben would be right there, watching... maybe joining in... maybe doing their own thing...

She had never enjoyed porn much before. She tried to picture it starring herself, or Ben, but failed.

"Okay, we can try it," she said softly, putting her beer bottle down on the end table. "How's it work?"

"I think you should just kiss him and do what comes naturally," Vivian said, smiling and pushing her hands together to pantomime what they should do. She pulled Ben back, between the easy chair and dinner table, giving Gene and Alicia plenty of space at the couch.

Gene approached her. He put one hand behind her back and the other behind her head and kissed her, just like at the Halloween party but this time they were in her and Ben's apartment with the lights on and they were dressed normally. She tried to kiss him back. It felt weird, like he was her brother, but maybe it's just because they barely knew each other?

He held her tightly but kissed her more lightly, teasing, and she found herself smiling and wrapped her arms around his back in turn. His hand ran from her lower back up, to her breast, played with her nipple in a way that always made her laugh when Ben did.

He sidled around, maneuvering her toward the couch. They sat down together, still kissing. His hand roamed around her body, around her back again, down her legs below the end of the dress.

When it roamed between her thighs, though, her legs clamped shut involuntarily.

She opened her eyes and looked up. Her eyes met Ben's, staring at her like she had sprouted a second head.

"Nope, nope, nope," she let go of Gene and leaned away. He got the message and stood up before she finished speaking. "Sorry, but I can't do this. This is too weird."

Gene bowed his head, put up his hands, and said "Sorry!" Alicia stood up anyway, her arms crossed.

Vivian winced. Ben looked stricken. "It's just weird," Alicia repeated. "I mean, sorry, no offense, if it works for you two, great, but it really, really wasn't working for me, and I don't think it's going to. It's not you, it's me." She wanted to laugh at using that line in this context, but couldn't.

"No need to apologize," Vivian said. "I'm sorry we put you in this position!"

"Seriously," Gene said, moving behind Vivian. "I don't know if I was rushing things or got the wrong idea entirely, but either way, if you aren't interested, that's fine." He took a sip of his beer, then put it down. "We should probably go, honey..." he said to Vivian.

Alicia sighed.

Oh, great, I don't want to be the party pooper...

"No, it's fine, we can all finish our drinks, I'm fine hanging out. I'll just be doing it... over here." She picked up her beer again and sat down on the corner of the couch.

"We should have known better," Vivian said. "Swapping with all four people in one room is 200-level swinging! 300-level maybe! Doing it on the first date, with people who aren't even in the lifestyle at all? Duh!" They all laughed awkwardly.

Ben sat in the middle of the couch, close to Alicia but not touching. Vivian took the easy chair. Ben offered to bring over a dining room table chair for Gene but he said he was fine standing.

"You OK?" Ben murmured to her.

"Yeah," she smiled at him and tried to make it look convincing.

"Really, it's not you either, it just happens sometimes," Vivian said. "A few months ago I was on a date with Barry, we've actually done a full swap with him and his wife more than once, but on this one date in August, he just couldn't keep his mind on the date! It almost gave me an identity crisis. I mean, I don't like to brag, but I don't normally have problems getting men hard, you know?"

She motioned to her ample boobs and bugged her eyes out. They all laughed, even Alicia a little. "But the girls weren't doing anything for him that night! He drove me home after drinks and just didn't get out of the car, even though I had been stroking his pants the whole way. I've never been more frustrated when I got home that night!"

"Oh yeah, he told me about that, honey," Gene cut in. "Apparently you spent the whole date looking at pictures of his daughter?"

"What's wrong with that? She's cute! You should have seen her, she was in this elf costume for spirit week at her school last year, I've never seen anything so adorable!"
