The house was quiet and still in the early morning. The bedside clock flashed 6:15am. The new born sun shone brightly through the windows, between the slit in the closed curtains of the bedroom as I snuck out. As I walked down the stairs I admired the portraits adorning the walls. Pictures of his kids in paint smocks, prom dresses, graduation caps and bridal gowns follow me as I head down the hall into the kitchen. I turned on the coffee machine as I entered the room. The sun was brightest in the kitchen, pouring through the windows above the sink and in the breakfast nook, glaring against the stainless steel appliances and shiny marble counter top.
I opened the large window above the sink, feeling the sun warm my face. A light breeze blew my hair slightly bringing birdsong into the kitchen as the smell of fresh brewing coffee filled the room. The pot gurgled and sputtered, I leaned against the island. On my legs the cat rubbed himself back and forth, back and forth as I took two mugs down from the shelf of a cupboard.
I poured the coffee, adding milk and sugar. Just the way he likes it. A mug in each hand, I tiptoed back up the stairs. The hem of his work shirt grazed the back of my bare legs, revealing my bare bum as I climbed the stairs. I took long strides down the hall trying to avoid any creaking from the hardwood floors. The French doors that led to the bedroom were wide open, as I left them, so I snuck back in placing my mug on the night stand.
From my left I heard him clear his throat. I turned to look at him surprised to find him watching me through one eye, a smile on his face. He sat up rubbing his eyes in that groggy, manly way that is almost childlike.
"Good morning beautiful," he said, his voice hoarse with sleep.
"Good morning handsome," I purred as I climbed onto the bed and into his arms.
"Surprise coffee in bed?" He asked as I handed him his mug. He sipped it slowly, licking his lips. "Mm mm, perfect. Just like you," he said as he snuggled his face into my neck. "I love waking up with you."
"I love waking up with you too," I replied as I traced the rim of his mug with my finger.
"Mmm," he growled as he kissed my ear and neck. I stopped him, cupping his face in my hands. He reached out and brushed a loose strand of hair out of my eyes. "You look like an angel right now. In this light, a vision from God."
"Oh shush," I said as I tapped his nose, a warm blush rising to my cheeks.
"I can't believe I have to work today," he groaned. "I just want to lie in bed with you all day," he said as he pushed me down into the pillows. He laid his coffee on the night stand and climbed on top of me. "Hey," he paused looking down at me, "How am I going to get ready if you're wearing my work shirt?"
"Hmm," I sighed as I put my arms above my head, "I guess you'll just have to get it off me then..." He smirked and kissed me softly.
