It was very painful, lying in bed with massive bruises and swollen joints. I was returning to my hometown and got rear-ended by a drunk driver. I travel a lot; it is part of the job. I'm very restless. I’d been in bed for two days and it was driving me nuts. There is only so much Oprah that any intelligent person can stand before totally losing contact with reality.
The word went out, as I used to work for the local police department and they were contacted when E.M.S. pulled me from the twisted metal. A couple of broken bones and a cast on my left arm, did I mention lots of pain?
I was feeling sorry for myself and was very depressed and couldn't get all of the things that I needed to get done out of my mind. Room 213 was where I was. Officers had been trooping in all day to check on the status of me. Quick banter and out the door they went. No one had come by for a while. I tried to stretch upward and every bone in my spine cracked, sending fire racing through every nerve that I had.
I asked for some pain meds and began to wait for the nurse to waddle her fat ass into the room with the drugs. It was dark in my room. The only light was from the television that was on, and the light spilling in from the hallway.
Suddenly, the light was blocked and that brought me out of my depressive stupor long enough to see her enter. I couldn't believe it. We had a thing 10 years in the past, yet had recently re-connected over the beloved Internet. She looked great. Hair was a little different, but she looked almost the same as ten years prior.
She came over and sat by the bed in a chair that she dragged along with her. I asked her what the fuck she was doing here. She replied that she had talked to an officer that had entered her store and found out that I was in town and screwed up. After she prodded a little, she convinced him to give her my hospital room by describing the tattoo that I had on my right hip. She got off of work early, yet was there after visiting hours.
That fat lazy nurse entered and told her to leave. The revolting nurse gave me my pills as I tried to plead with her to let my friend stay. "It is against policy!" She bellowed.
