Hot Day
"Good morning, everyone. If you are thinking of heading into Savanah today, remember there are major delays on the I95 due to construction. It is going to be a scorcher today with another forecast record high of 109 F. This will be the third day in a row with a record high temperature and no relief in sight. If you don't have AC you are advised to go to one of the cooling centers." The radio droned on moving from the weather into the latest political scandal. There have been charges of corruption, around contracts for the I95 construction work. The project is behind schedule and way over budget. I switch to a classic rock station.
We have AC in the bedroom, Teddy installed a heat pump two years ago, and I really appreciate it now, though it would have been better if we could have afforded to cool more than the bedroom. I mix up a jug of lemonade and put it in the fridge. I clean up the dishes from my breakfast and put them in the dishwasher. Teddy has been out of town on a project for the last three weeks, and on his call last night he said there were delays on his project and he had no idea when he would be back. He is installing a control system for a new power plant. It will capture wave and tidal energy to feed the growing demand in Savanah. His work site is about a hundred miles off the coast, so it is not easy for him to get time off. On the other hand, he will earn enough to keep us for the next year, so maybe we can add AC in the kitchen.
It is 9AM and I am already sweating. I put on a really skimpy bikini. An old one that is rather ratty, but I am not expecting visitors today.
I throw ice cubes into a glass, fill it with lemonade, grab a box of cookies, and my book and head to the veranda. There is a slight breeze which helps the sweat cool me down. I settle down with my book.
After three trips in for more lemonade I finish the jug I made this morning, next trip I will need to make a new jug. The heat is getting worse so I spend a couple of minutes in the bedroom to cool down. The AC is at its limit trying to keep the bedroom from becoming an oven. Then I return to the veranda.
I am about done my lemonade when I notice dust on the access road. Probably a delivery guy, I am expecting a number of packages, just none today. A decrepit baby blue pickup truck comes around the corner with two guys in it. It has seen better days, par for the course in this area. It pulls up in front of the house. Mark gets out of the passenger side, and a guy I don't know gets out of the driver side. I quickly rake my fingers through my shoulder length hair to straighten it out. It is a mess, and I have not done anything with it because I was not expecting visitors. I brush it back from my face and try to hook it around my ears.
Mark is one of the first people Teddy introduced me to when we started dating. I am pretty sure he had the hots for me, but he never made a move, I would have said yes, still would. Then Teddy proposed, killing that opportunity for him. I like Mark, he is a nice guy, fit and attractive. He married Millicent about a year ago and they had their first kid about 6 weeks ago.
"Hi Mark, what brings you out here?"
"Avi. Teddy has some landscaping equipment and supplies that he said I could borrow. This is Jim, he wants to put in a water feature for his wife."
"Hi, Jim, I am Avril."
Jim nods, "Mam". Jim is skinny and tall. Both he and Mark are sweating in the heat.
"C'mon in, I will make up a new jug of lemonade." The three of us walk through to the kitchen. We talk about the weather and the heat while I make up the lemonade. I give them each a tall glass, more ice than lemonade, then grab the garage keys. "I expect the stuff you are looking for is in the garage. It shouldn't be too bad as the garage is mostly in the shade till midafternoon."
