Sally stood at the edge of grass near the fair stage fanning herself. She could feel the late summer sun on her shoulders and was glad she wore a strapless top to be a little cooler. After glancing around the other fair-goers she looked at the stage to see a woman go to the microphone and announce the act was a little behind. Sighing, Sally turned and went walking to find a concession stand to get a drink.
"Hey stranger, it's been awhile." Sally heard a familiar voice as she waited on her lemonade. A familiar pair of eyes popped up and startled her. "Hey Jake! I knew that voice was familiar." And it should've been since they were high school friends and neighbors who drifted apart after college.
"Are you hiding the good drinks in there?" Sally asked jokingly since they both knew alcohol was forbidden at the fairgrounds. "Not here, but I can get you something better if you come back later" Jake said. "I may have to take you up on that Jake" Sally said as she turned towards the stage.
After the show was over, Sally went back to Jake's stand and couldn't hide her disappointment when he was gone. As she started to turn away she heard a voice say "Hey you're Jake's friend. He left this for you." A young girl handed Sally a note that read 'Come to camper lot 12 for that drink and to catch up--J.' Sally smiled as read his writing and signature that never changed.
Nervously she walked back to the campground looking at lot numbers and remembering some of the good times she & Jake had. Even though they were always close, there was never a spark with them and Sally had always wondered why.
Sally saw Jake sitting outside his camper with what appeared to be a thermos of coffee. There was a second chair and thermos making her wonder if it was a good idea to come back. "There you are. Wasn't sure if you would make it but got ready just in case" Jake said as he nodded to the chair. "Don't worry there's a little something extra in the coffee. I remember just how you like it."
Sally smiled as she took a sip and tell there was something more in the cup. As they sat talking, the sun went down & Sally started to shiver. Now she wished she had worn something a little warmer. Jake saw her shivering and got up, taking her by the hand and said "Let's go in and catch up more. I don't want you to get sick because of me."
