The journey down the hallway was short. We found Huan seated and holding a cup of coffee.
He smiled broadly and spoke.
"Please come and sit."
He motioned to a young man that left to return with two steaming cups of coffee. These were placed before Solenne and me.
Huan spoke.
"Michael, you must have many questions. I know that Solenne has answered a few. This must be difficult for you to comprehend."
At that moment, Graud joined us. A generous size mug of coffee placed before him.
Huan continued.
"It has been this way since the beginning of time. As it was for my fathers before me. We each leave to find our mates. The change has been this. We always have sons to carry on the traditions. Solenne is the exception. Never has a daughter been heir to the mountain. Yet I am very pleased with her progress and the choice of her mate. I believe this signals a great change for things here. Michael, you may choose to leave if you like. You will not be forced to stay with us. But I would see Solenne inherit the mountain with you at her side as protector. Yes, occasionally there are threats to our way of life here. Rogue wizards or mages attempt to take this place from us. The windows also show us that Graud is to be a member of our community if he wishes. His wife and daughter are welcome additions as would Tooth, the mountain lion.
We have a close-knit family here. There are many different cultures, people from many places and as you have seen Graud, those like you. Very rare indeed."
Graud only grunted in response.
Huan turned to me and spoke.
"Has Solenne told you yet?"
I looked at Huan and then to Solenne.
Solenne spoke.
"I have not told him Father. He does not know."
I spoke.
"Know what? What is it that I don't know?"
Solenne turned to me, took my hands in hers, and spoke.
"Michael, after last night's love making, I carry our child. Already is grows within me. I feel her power and presence."
Huan spoke.
"Ah, another daughter, how unexpected."
Solenne spoke.
"Michael, stay because you want to. I love you; you know this. I believe you love me as well. Let us raise our child here. Our little girl. She will be like me. One day, she will leave to find her mate. Hopefully someone like her father."
Solenne turned to Graud and spoke.
"Graud, we ask that you bring your family here. You and your wife will be God parents to our child. Trinkle will find company in those like you and with all the others."
Huan spoke.
"It is a great request we make of you both. Your lives will never be like they were before. Please take some days to think upon what we offer and what we ask."
Huan stood and bowed deeply. Then he left the room. Graud stood, grunted, and strode into the rows of coffee plants. Leaving Solenne and I alone.
I turned to Solenne and spoke.
"When would you tell me of our child? Our daughter?"
Solenne bowed her head. A slight sniffle was heard.
She spoke.
"Without an heir someday, this mountain will fall into the wrong hands. You are the one foretold. Michael, you are under no obligation. We need you. You will save us all. It has been seen."
I stood. I walked to Solenne and kissed the top of her head. Then I turned to go into the coffee plants. I needed to think. I needed to think a lot. What was Graud thinking? What does he make of this?
It was dark when I returned. Still needing time, I found a quiet place to spend the night on my own. Solenne would be disappointed I would not sleep in her bed. She must understand this is complicated. A quiet, but troubled night. When sleep came, there were dreams. Disturbing dreams. Were they things that could be? Things to come? How do you make sense of this? There is more to this than me. A grave responsibility.
A Great Challenge
I brooded for days about what to do. Graud's decision was easy. He would no longer live in a cave. He would be with his mate and daughter always. There were several others like Graud. Several of them were Trinkle's age. I see the positives for him. Huan provided a small army to assist Graud and his family. They also allowed Tooth to remain with Trinkle. A massive mountain lion patrolled the grounds and no one thought it any different. Trinkle demonstrated her archery skills to me. She had improved much. Trinkle proved an excellent student and teacher. She began to share her talents and knowledge with others. Soon there was a small army of fledgling archers. Trinkle coxed me into helping. A sly girl.
I wandered a lot. Thinking about what I should do. Solenne could be seen at a distance. She watched and observed me. Even from the distance, I noticed the look of concern she wore. I need to make a choice. I confess though. My feelings for Solenne and now for our unborn child, these are very strong pulls on my choosing. Did my old life have such an attraction? Dangers and uncertainty everywhere. Why do I hesitate to take hold of something better?
The bells and gongs sounded. Something emergency I thought.
I ran to the wall. Huan's ice soldiers had assembled outside the wall. I peered towards the cliff. Dark shapes could be seen climbing to the plain. Graud had the others like him assembled for a fight. Trinkle had her fledgling archers on the wall and ready. Newly fashioned bows and arrows in abundance. Solenne ran to meet me. My weapons are in her hands. These she gave me and kissed me. Then she stood next to me, her staff in hand. Huan moved to Solenne's side.
Huan spoke.
"It is Húndàn. He brings his army again. He wants this place for himself. The last time, we barely escaped. His army is larger now."
There was fear in Huan's voice. Solenne also appeared troubled. It appears my decision has been made for me. I will stay here with these people and make my stand with them.
