A Reporter in the House!
David opened his office door stepping out, "Ladies we have a reporter here undercover prostituting herself, come and keep her company will you, while I call the police."
She was thinking, 'I am a reporter, he can't do this to me.'
Jo arrived first, he said, "You heard her offer herself to me in exchange for information claiming to be Ashley's ex-wife didn't you?"
She nodded quickly knowing that if that's what David said then it must be right. Two others arrived soon, so far Rose hadn't said a word. "This woman is a reporter masquerading as 'Ashley's' ex-wife." He spat out that name with such venom there was no doubt that he was after blood, but then took hold of his temper. He wondered why she was willing to prostitute herself for her ex but put that question aside for later. Next he rang the Police Chief, "Hello Dave," he said, "Sorry to ring you late at home but I have had a reporter here who has been trying to prostitute herself to get into our retreat and gather a story." Then he listened before agreeing, "Yes we must avoid the press if we are going to provide a safe haven, one word in the papers and the husbands will be down here knocking seven bells out of their ex-wives." He listened again. Then, "I will try to find out, hold on a second."
"Who does she work for?" he said to Lauren who was hovering menacingly as she was finding out what was going on. Then David listened again. "OK I'll text you as soon as I find out."
He finished his call and said so that everyone could hear, "The Chief is sending two detectives down to take her in for questioning." Rose thought herself a hard bitten investigator but even she was starting to wonder.
"Jo, Rachel, Erika," He instructed, " please go and play back all the cameras to see what questions she's been asking and show how she's been passing herself off without actually saying why she is here or identifying herself as a reporter. I want all the evidence you can find for the police. Lauren, can you help me enquire with the prostitute who she works for please, thanks. The police chief would like a word with the newspaper's owners.
He went back into the office and this time they had someone hold a camera recording. "Ok Rose or whoever you are, so you entered upon our property making out that you were a wife who suffered at the hands of an abusive husband and have been asking questions about our retreat without telling us that you are a reporter. So which newspaper do you work for?" Lauren opened with.
At first she didn't respond, mainly because nothing like this had ever happened to her before and she was lost for what to say. Then she tried bluffing that she didn't know what their place was. He said, "So why then did you try to exchange your sexual favours for an ex-husband who left you with nothing?" She didn't really have a satisfactory answer to that. "Ok," he said, "let's see how you get on with my friends at the police department, I went to school with a lot of them."
'Who does he think he is?' Rose thought to herself. Then wrapped herself in determination refusing to budge further.
"So," Lauren continued, ignoring her attitude, "You offered yourself to David in exchange for money in order to gain entry to our property."
"No I didn't," she couldn't help herself responding indignantly.
"Really?, Weren't you asked by Ashley to have sex with me?" David insinuated.
"Yes but."
"Are you saying that he didn't offer you anything in return?" Lauren played Starsky to his Hutch.
Rose decided to shut up at that.
"OK I will take that as a yes, as you haven't denied it. Is Ashley your ex-husband or is that a lie too?" It was David's turn.
"He is my ex-husband,'' she allowed.
"So it will show on our cameras that you said he gave you a bad time in your marriage. Was that a lie too?" Suggested Lauren now rather enjoying herself and privately wondering when she got to bitchslap her.
She didn't reply again.
"I'll take that as another lie." His monologue was then interrupted when the Detectives arrived. David turned and with a huge smile on his face embraced the lead detective in a man hug, patting each other on the back. "Phillip you old philanderer, how the devil are you? Whose heart have you broken lately?"
A voice behind him realised then that she was on a 'hiding to nothing.' "I work for the Enquirer," she said.
He typed the newspaper name in and sent it to the police chief and within seconds a smiley and thumbs up came back. He couldn't help but smirk.
He handed Phillip the memory card from his system and they went to another room to talk. I don't know if it's any good to you but I'm probably able to fill in the gaps. My ladies are going through video recordings to find anything relating to her."
"Whatever you do, don't edit the tapes in any way or they will be useless," said Phillip, "but for now, I'm sure you would rather keep this quiet so we'll take her in and question her, see if she can add to what you told me. Then let's see how the chief gets on with the newspaper."
"Thanks, anything you can do until the Chief has spoken to her bosses will be much appreciated."
Phillip asked him if he could give an overview.
"It's very embarrassing," David started.
"I am not in the least bit surprised," said his old school friend with a huge grin expecting to get a juicy story he could torment David with for years to come.
So David gave him an overview, much to his embarrassment. The Detective could not stop himself laughing when he was told that David had offered to do a swap in order to waylay his ladies plans. "You randy bugger," he said, "why do you try to save everyone? some just aren't saveable."
It made David think, 'Was his friend right? Surely not! All of his ladies were worth saving, but this had been a salutary, overdue, warning, that they must ensure didn't happen again. It had been too close for comfort. It was a good thing that community leaders had got behind him when they published the plans for the Farm retreat project. He was sure to get a telling off tomorrow by the Chief, so he would need to show what actions they were taking to make sure this couldn't happen again. He decided to call a meeting of all the ladies and brought the two ladies in Ohio in by Zoom, but he couldn't make up his mind about involving Jane and Bree, it could really spoil their plans and he didn't want to influence them. He collared Ana and asked her opinion, "You can't win either way" she opined. He decided that not influencing them was the highest priority and to tell them when the week was up and they had made their decision whether or not to return.
Having been affected in one way or another, many of the women were vehement in their feelings about this intrusion and the possible ramifications. Their input was quick coming and it wasn't long before a firm list of new policies were agreed. "Right, could someone get this to the Chief's house in the morning?" He asked.
Jo's hand went up as she was starting later the following day, she was feeling really guilty having drawn Rose into the group and David saw it on her face. "You're not to blame in any way whatsoever," he told her, "it could have happened to any of us." He realised that another opinion was needed and looked at Nina for help, and she followed his eyes, immediately understanding what he meant. He left them still debating and headed off to bed, he was tired and couldn't face another problem today.
He vaguely heard Jo come in and try not to wake him but at some very late hour he felt two other naked bodies join him either side.
