Lisa was in the middle of typing an email when her phone rang. She looked over and smiled as she picked up the receiver.
"Aaron, good morning," she said coyly.
"Good morning Lisa, how are you?" he asked.
Ah, pleasantries. Lisa had spent several years working at the Twin Oaks branch of the lending corporation they both worked for. Aaron was a recent hire, working in the Charlotte office. They had never met, but they got along so well via phone calls and email correspondence that Aaron immediately asked if she was interested in transferring when a spot opened up at their office. Lisa decided to accept the offer. The management at her branch had changed around a lot, and while Lisa was a great worker, she didn't agree with her boss's management style. Secretly she started looking for other jobs and exploring her options. When she found out about the position at the Charlotte office, she jumped at the opportunity.
Plus, Aaron sounded like a fox. She couldn't wait to meet him.
They spoke about an account briefly, then she asked about her upcoming move. "Do you know if I'll have a window seat?" she asked, kind of joking.
Aaron laughed. "No, unfortunately those are taken by private offices. But you will be sitting across from me."
Lisa knew that he liked her. "Good."
"Yeah...I'm looking forward to meeting you," Aaron said quietly.
"Ohh. Well I'm looking forward to meeting you," she said casually.
They got off the phone, and Lisa turned back to her inbox, thinking about what he said to her.
Aaron couldn't remember ever feeling so excited. It was about two weeks later and Lisa's first day of work at his branch. He got to work early just to make sure his cubicle was tidy.
He started getting involved in an expense report when he heard the HR person, Susan, get closer. She was giving directions to the floor plan.
"So your cubicle is over here, near the supply closet," she was saying. "You can settle in and your boss will come over shortly."
Aaron stood up and was greeted by a young, blonde haired woman with dark eyes. Her hair fell in soft honey waves around her face. She looked a little tan, and the blue wrap dress she wore clearly accented her curves.
She smiled at him immediately. "Aaron?"
He grinned at her. He felt like they were sharing an inside joke as his eyes stayed locked on hers. She gave him a big smile.
"I guess we are neighbors now," she said, surveying the small hall between their cubes before setting her bag down on her desk.
"You look even better in person than you sound on the phone," he blurted out.
She gave him a funny look real quick before smiling again. "Uh, thanks." She sized him up, finally saying, "From your voice, I thought you had blue eyes. I guess I was wrong."
She sat in her chair and Aaron sat in his. "Sorry to disappoint," he said sheepishly.
She looked over at him quick. "You didn't," she said with a wink.
He shared another smile with her. He hadn't even spoken to her for a full five minutes and he already felt like he had an overwhelming crush on her. The last few months he felt that they had developed their camaraderie into something a little more personal, but it was nothing like seeing her in person.
