Choosing Stacey (Part 2)
+++++ Ch 5 +++++
For Thanksgiving, almost everyone went home to spend the holiday with family. Kevin, Mike, Jim and Brittany all lived near each other in North County San Diego. Stacey drove home to her parent's place up in Orange County. Christy made the long drive to Phoenix while Anne went home to the city of Ontario, just east of Los Angeles. Kevin called Stacey everyday while they were apart. They both went back to school early on Sunday and spent the day in bed together, getting reacquainted. Then came the final push to the end of the semester and their finals.
The ECON 490 study group agreed to meet almost every evening to study and prepare for their finals. There were hiring fairs in the spring, making the Fall semester grades an important factor in many company's hiring decisions. For anyone looking to go to grad school, they would have to start applying soon, making the Fall grades important here as well. The thought of these upcoming decisions added some stress to a difficult season.
As Kevin put his study materials in his backpack, Stacey grumped at him, "Again? I thought you all met last night?"
Kevin sighed, "We did and we focused on our 490 class. Tonight we're focused on our 421 class."
"And tomorrow?"
"Different study group, I'll be working with some friends from my finance class."
"Well, at least it won't be with that slut Christy."
Kevin rolled his eyes, "You know I don't like it when you call my friend a slut. In fact..."
"She's interested in you and she knows you have a girlfriend. That makes her a slut!"
"Dammit, Stacey! I've told you she isn't interested in me! We're just studying! In a group!"
Hearing the annoyance in his voice, Stacey sidled close to Kevin and wrapped him up in a big hug, "I'm sorry baby, I didn't mean to make you angry." She turned his face to hers and gave him a deep passionate kiss. "I'm sorry. I just get scared sometimes."
"Scared?"
She nodded, "I don't want anyone to steal you away. I love you so much!" She stopped, wide-eyed as she realized what she had just said. "Uh..."
Kevin stared back at her. "I..." He was shocked at what she had just admitted, but the look on her face let him know that she wasn't lying. The joy that ran through his soul was almost shocking in its intensity.
"I didn't mean to say..."
He put a finger on her lips to stop her, "I love you too!"
With a cry she grabbed the back of his head and pulled him down again, kissing him madly, "I love you so much! I...I didn't want to say anything and scare you!"
"You could never scare me away!" They kissed deeply for a few minutes, lost to the world, until Kevin gently pushed her away. "I'm sorry, I really need to go or I'll be late! I'll come back tonight and make it up to you. Maybe a quick drink at our favorite bar?"
After a final kiss, he walked out the door. As he left, Stacey watched him with a small smile on her face.
Kevin was only a few minutes late when he walked into the library room the study group was using. John and Caesar were discussing a section from the textbook, but Christy and Anne were both staring at Kevin as he walked in.
"What? Do I have food on my face?"
Anne turned away, a bit flustered but Christy shot back, "No, but you have a big, goofy grin on your face and you look very happy. Unusually happy. Did you get laid before you came over?"
"What? No! So what if I'm a bit happier than normal?"
"Uh huh. What happened, you can tell me."
Kevin looked at her with an annoyed expression. "It's private."
Anne looked up at him, "Please?"
He sighed in defeat and in a quiet voice he told them, "Stacey and I exchanged our first 'I love you' right before I came over."
Anne looked shocked, but Christy covered for her by drawing everyone's eyes to her, "Awwww, that's so cute!" She walked around the table and gave Kevin a hug, "I'm so happy for you!" As she disengaged from Kevin, she mouthed "I'm sorry" to Anne.
Anne sighed and pulled out her text book.
John took that as a sign to begin, "Ok, in Chapter 6..."
After the study group, Christy and Anne hung back as the three guys packed up and headed to their respective homes.
Seeing Anne staring at her feet, Christy walked up and wrapped her up into a huge hug. "It'll get better sweetie. But you just need to move on."
Anne looked up at Christy, "I know." A tear rolled down her cheek, "But I think I love him and it hurts so much!"
Christy pulled Anne's head to her shoulder. As she did so she could feel Anne was wracked by silent sobs. Christy just held her until the sobs subsided and the tears died.
"You ok, hon?"
"Yeah, I'll be ok." Anne sniffled. "Thank you for the shoulder." She slowly pulled away and wiped at her eyes, "I bet I look a mess."
Christy eyed her and nodded, "Yep, you do, but that's ok. Here." She took a handy tissue and wiped the last tears from Anne's face. "That's better... You ready?"
"Yeah, I am. Let's go."
As they walked out, Christy asked, "Don't you and Kevin have coffee every Wednesday after class?"
"Yes."
"Still going to do it?"
"I am. If I can't have his heart, I'll settle for his friendship... For now."
Christy smiled to herself.
Coffee the next day was a bit awkward. Kevin could tell something was off and the conversation to that point had been stilted and uncomfortable. Anne had barely made eye contact with him and was currently staring at her latte'.
"Anne, look at me."
She slowly raised her head and attempted a smile.
"What's wrong? You've been abnormally quiet since we got here."
"Nothing, I'm fine."
"Bullshit!"
