Hailey's House 8:00 A.M.:
Hailey awoke with a sense of unease. Today, she had an interview with the university job coordinator. This interview was crucial to her scholarship requirements, as it would determine the best job on campus to help cover her living expenses.
Incoming Text Message
Hailey looks at her phone; it's from Jake Harmon.
Jake and Hailey met a few weeks ago at Club Element in downtown Oodena. They shared a passionate, hot night and went their separate ways, or so they thought ... the next day, they bump into each other at Otonabee University and discover that Jake is Hailey's professor. They exchanged numbers before they knew the truth and have even given in to their temptations a few times for some naughty phone calls and sexting. However, with this interview and Jake's reputation on the line, they have kept things strictly professional over the last week.
Good Morning, Beautiful. I just wanted to wish you good luck today. I know we have had to deny ourselves from being anything more than a professor/student relationship, but I know how important this is to you, and I wish you nothing but the best.
She looks at the message with a warm smile and replies.
Thank you! 😌 It means a lot to me that you remembered. I'm nervous
Hailey sits in bed, her eyes waiting as those little dots appear on her screen, knowing Jake is responding. Her thoughts drifted to the day they bumped into each other in the hallway; Jake was protective when he heard some young frat kid antagonizing and following her through the hall. The moment their eyes met and they saw one another was a connection she could not describe. She had already had sleepless nights and naughty private moments with herself remembering their hookup, and she felt an instant connection to him on that night. The later realization that he was also her professor was heart-shattering. She knows having a romantic/physical relationship with her professor is unethical, but something keeps drawing them together. She doesn't care about the optics, but she understands them. This is why she has been trying to keep things professional, but a few moments like this with these private texts remind her that he still cares about her.
The chime from her phone brings her back to the present.
I know you're nervous; who wouldn't be? but just be yourself. You are so intelligent and well-spoken. Whenever you openly discuss a topic in class, I am captivated by your views and opinions. Hailey, you are going to be fine. I am sorry we cannot ethically pursue whatever our feelings are. I wish things were genuinely different. I wish I could hold you and tell you that you're going to be fine today and kiss your forehead and squeeze you as you leave. ... Shit, sorry ... You'll do fine. Let me know how it goes, okay?
Hailey's heart skips a beat!
Fuck!!!!!! Why can't two consenting adults be allowed to pursue what they feel?
She screams to herself. She knows she's not coming on to him for better grades or preferential treatment, and he is not using his authority as her professor to get sexual favours from her; they met before the power relationship was established! She sighs and shakes the thoughts from her head; there is not much she can do to change the situation.
You are too sweet to me, Jake; I appreciate your comforting words ... I wish ... ugh ... thank you for being here for me. I have to get ready now; I will let you know how it goes.
She puts down her phone and continues to get ready.
Jakes House 8:00 A.M.:
Reading her last message, Jake senses how hard Hailey is trying to respect the optics of their situation. He has been struggling with his feelings and figuring out a loophole to their ethical conundrum. Jake likes Hailey; they are not involved in unethical give-and-take situations. He truly admires her intelligence, her bravery and, of course, her beauty. In the crazy circumstances of how they met and the little he has gotten to know of her personality, he wants to spend more time with her and learn more about her.
He pulls up his schedule for the day with a sigh and a rub of the back of his neck. He realizes all the paperwork he has to get done, and he is frustrated. The University promises to hire a Teaching Assistant for him, but this has yet to happen, and he is falling behind on his important work.
He tosses his phone on the bed as he gets up, stretches with a groan, and heads into the bathroom to get ready for the day ahead.

On-Campus Job Recruiter's Office
"Thanks for coming in today, Hailey." The recruiter says as she welcomes Hailey into her office.
Hailey responds with professional pleasantries.
The recruiter continues, "I have looked over your resume and academic record, and I am very impressed with your level of professionalism. Not many people come through here with these qualities. I know you're older than most of the first years here. Do you find that is an issue when dealing with your peers?"
"Thank you for recognizing my professionalism. I certainly do not believe I am superior or better than my peers because of my age; I may not be able to relate to many of them. I prefer interacting and conversing with adults who have had the same experience as me. Still, I can get along and be a productive professional with anyone, no matter their age," Hailey replies.
"I can certainly understand what you mean. I don't think working in the student centre would be a good fit; you're more driven than just a small coffee shop job or food counter." The recruiter says as she pauses to look through some files on her computer.
"You know we have had this request sitting for a while. This position usually goes to graduate-level students, but it might be worth a try; how would you feel about being a Teacher's Assistant?
Hailey smiles and reacts excitedly but remains professional. "Wow, yes, that sounds great. I have extensive research experience and enjoy working with professionals. I will gladly accept if you think we could make this happen." She responds.
