She wasn't the type of girl that usually got lots of attention at bars so she thought it was just her imagination when she saw the guy at the end of the bar looking at her. When she finished her drink, she was getting ready to leave, he walked over to her. He was a bit older but in great shape.
"Hi, miss. Can I buy you a drink?" he asked with a warm smile.
"Oh sorry, I'd love to but I was just leaving. I need to get some food. I was hoping to get a burger or something but the kitchen is closed."
He offered his hand to help her down off the barstool. "Well, you know there's a 24 hour diner across the street. So how about I buy you a burger instead of a drink?"
There was just something about him that she liked immediately. "Deal," she agreed returning his smile.
They walked across the street to the diner. They sat at a booth in the back and made small talk while looking at the menu. Conversation came easy without the usual awkwardness of strangers. A bubbly waitress came over to take their order.
"I'll have the bacon cheeseburger, well done with fries, and a sweet tea," she ordered.
"That sounds good. I'll have the same with a coke."
Their conversation continued to flow effortlessly. The waitress came over to apologize for the long wait and assured them their food would be ready shortly. Truth be told, they'd been enjoying each others company so much that neither had noticed how much time had passed.
A few minutes later, the food arrived at the table as promised.
"Damn, I forgot to say no onions," she said as she picked the onions off the burger.
"Good idea," he said as he did the same. "Onion breath wouldn't be a good idea since I am hoping to kiss you at some point."
She laughed.
"Okay... not exactly the response I was hoping for," he said looking a bit dejected.
"No, no, it's not...It's me..." she started.
"Oh the old it's not you, it's me. This just gets better and better," he said with a nervous laugh.
"That's not what I meant. I just don't get hit on a lot except by desperate losers at the end of the night and you don't strike me as desperate or a loser so I've been sitting here wondering if you're just being friendly or if you're really interested so I laughed cuz I was relieved," she explained.
"I find that hard to believe. You were the beautiful woman in that bar." He made her blush, not just because of what he said, but the way he said it. She knew he really meant it.
When they finished their meal, the waitress came over and offered them a complimentary piece of pie to make up for the long wait boasting the best pecan pie in the state. They ordered a slice to share.
After they finished, he walked her back to her car. "I'm so full. I can't believe I ate all that," she said.
"I love a girl with a good appetite," he said.
"Oh really?" she asked with a laugh.
"Yes, really," he said as he took her hand. "I hate it when a girl says she's hungry then orders a bowl of lettuce and water then eats half my fries."
