I thought I was dreaming at first. Bang, bang, bang. But it didn't cease when I opened my eyes. Bang, bang. Nope, that was indeed someone at the door.
My alarm clock said 11:32 pm. Who the hell was at my door at this hour?
I walked slightly bleary-eyed to the front entrance and was pleasantly surprised to see my next-door neighbor's brother, Eric, on the other side.
"I'm sorry to bother you, Amy," he began. "But I left the key to the house in my other jacket pocket and my sister's working her night shift."
"So, you're locked out?" I finished.
Eric nodded in agreement.
"Well, come on in," I said. "It won't be a fun vacation if you had to spend a night outside in this weather."
He looked grateful as he crossed the threshold.
"What time does your sister get home?"
"She's doing an 8 pm-8 am shift," he replied.
"Ok. Well, do you want a drink? I have some soda, juice, wine, water?"
"Wine, if you don't mind," came his reply.
"Great choice. I'll pour us two glasses." I said, making my way to the kitchen. This was certainly not how I imagined tonight going when I first headed to bed. But I am not complaining about this change of script.
As I joined Eric on the couch, we started chatting about his vacation so far.
"I'm enjoying the sights of the city and catching up with my sister. Plus, it was lovely meeting you at the house party yesterday." I had to blink a couple of times. Did Eric just wink at me? Was he flirting with me?
