Heather stepped out onto the street, the cold front had blown over and it finally really felt like May. She was ready for the warmer weather, excited to be outside, exploring a new city and starting her new life. A life without that asshole Eric. She gave herself a mental shake, she was on her way to have coffee with a nice new man that Brianna thought was a perfect match for her. The last thing she needed to be doing was dwelling on her ex. A new city, a new life, and maybe a new relationship with an interesting new man.
That thought warming her she quickened her steps. She stopped in front of the cute little boutique next to Coffee Pages and examined her reflection in the window. She was glad she had made time to see the hair dresser Brianna had recommended, blondes had more fun after all and her hair had really grown out quite a bit since she had first dyed it. Satisfied with how she looked, she turned and resumed her walk.
Unsurprisingly, Brianna was behind the counter when she came through the door. She glanced around the tables, trying to hide the mix of nervousness and excitement inside her. Their resident novelist was at his usual table, pecking away at his laptop, two older ladies sharing a table, a younger couple opposite them, and a young man sitting in the back reading a book. She'd seen him look up when she came in, and then return to his book. The quick look he'd given her made it obvious he'd been looking for someone else.
Well, nothing wrong with being the first one here, she'd have a chance to talk to Briana.
"Heather, you look amazing," Briana commented as she approached the counter.
"Oh, thank you, and thank you for the recommendation."
"Of course, Patricia does wonderful work, doesn't she? And when she has someone as lovely as you to work with..."
Heather felt herself blushing, as she responded, "That's nice of you to say."
"The God's honest truth, what can I get you?"
Heather looked up at the menu, "Maybe the Iced Blonde Vanilla Latte? It's finally warm enough for that I think."
"And not a moment too soon," Briana agreed, "Want me to bring it over to your table?"
Heather looked at her in confusion, "Ahh, sure... that would be fine I guess."
Briana's smile broadened, "No sense in keeping your match waiting."
Heather's confusion deepened, "My match? But he isn't here yet."
It was Briana's turn to be confused, she leaned forward over the counter looking at the tables.
"No, he's still there, at the table in the corner, curly hair, reading a book."
"He is my match?"
"Is there a problem?" Briana's confusion giving away to concern.
"Yes, I mean no... it's just... well... he's... he's beautiful."
"Well, generally people consider that a good thing in a match, and you are beautiful too."
Heather took a deep breath, trying to relax herself. That man was... well beautiful. He looked like the actor cast to play the big city guy in some Hallmark movie, and regardless of what Brianna said she knew she definitely did NOT look like the small-town girl he was destined to fall in love with over Christmas. Her cute but quirky side kick maybe, if that maybe included a few months of hitting the gym and laying off Briana's baked goods.
She felt Brianna's hand on hers, and her calm voice.
"Heather, listen, if you really don't want to do this it's fine, you can just sit anywhere, and in a few minutes, I'll go tell him his match called and had to cancel. It will be fine. But I really think you are selling yourself short, I wouldn't have matched you with him if I didn't have a good feeling about this."
Heather gave Brianna a weak smile, "OK, I guess if I chicken out then I'm just being superficial."
Brianna returned the smile, "That's it, think positive."
Heather glanced over at the man, he still seemed to be engrossed in his book.
"Any idea what he's reading?"
"No, he brought it in, and I couldn't read the title when I took his drink over. The book looks ancient though."
Heather nodded, took a deep breath and with a confident stride that didn't match how she felt she headed for the table.
He looked up as she approached, standing as he realized she was heading for his table.
"Hello," he said with a dazzling smile as he extended his hand, "I'm Cassian, delighted to meet you."
She took his hand, shaking it, "I'm Heather, nice to meet you."
With a polished grace Cassian slid the chair out for her, "Care to join me?"
"Of course, I mean, that's why we're here, right?"
"Well, that's certainly true, but it's no reason not to extend the courtesy due a lady."
He returned to his own chair, picking up the book and tucking it away into a leather messenger bag that was on the remaining chair at the little table. Heather caught a glimpse of the title but it was in a language she didn't recognize.
"Uh, what are you reading?" she asked, trying to sound calm and confident.
"Meditations by Marcus Aurelius."
"It was beautifully bound."
"It is, they were true artisans back then."
He reached over, pulled the book back out of the bag and extended it to her.
She took it surprised by the weight of it as she examined the spine, then opened the book, carefully flipping through a few pages before looking up.
"What language is that, it isn't Latin is it?"
"No, good guess though, it's Koine Greek, the language he wrote it in."
"You speak Greek?"
"Unfortunately, no I just read it. I'm sure my pronunciation would be terrible if I tried. It's fairly distant from modern Greek, but it's nice to be able to read Plutarch in the original language, or most of the New Testament for that matter."
She stared at him for a moment, unsure of what to say. She handed the book back and he returned it to the bag.
Brianna appeared with her Iced Latte and set it down in front of her.
"Can I get you anything Cassian?"
