"There's no reason not to bring me across," Dr. Natalie Lambert said to her lover Nick Knight, the vampire detective. The tall, brown-haired and pale-skinned, 800-year-old immortal considered the words of his beloved. After the death of detective Tracey Vetter, Nick felt it was time to move on from his life as a police detective in Toronto, Ontario. Dr. Natalie Lambert, Nick's lover and Tracey's friend, had strong feelings about that. Nick looked at Natalie, wondering if the woman understood what she was asking. Becoming a vampire is no small matter...
"Yes, my love," Nick Knight replied, and he pulled Natalie Lambert into his arms and kissed her. The curvy, dark-haired and big-bottomed physician embraced her vampire lover with all of her might. In the heat of the night, the vampire cop and the female doctor made love. Standing outside Dr. Natalie Lambert's apartment, vampire master Lucien Lacroix watched the proceedings. Nick was about to make a colossal mistake, one which Lucien Lacroix wouldn't be able to save him from, unless...
"Halt," Lucien Lacroix roared as he stormed into the apartment, flying in like a bat out of hell. Nick was caught by surprise, as was Natalie. Nick was about to turn Natalie or bring her across, and Lacroix knew that the rookie vampire would botch things up. Seizing Natalie in his arms, Lacroix bit her. Nick roared in anger but Lacroix batted him away. The former Roman general and consulate had been a vampire for over 2000 years. Compared to Lacroix, Nick was nothing. The vampire master wasn't about to let his favorite fledgling ruin his life in this manner...
"Lacroix, what have you done?" Nick demanded as he rose to his feet. Lacroix shushed his vampire fledgling and gently laid the unconscious Natalie on the bed. Lacroix carefully pulled dark sheets over the windows, and then sat at a chair. Nick looked at Lacroix angrily. The vampire master stared down his favorite vampire fledgling. In a fight, Nick was no match for Lacroix and they both knew it. Lacroix was the king of the vampire underworld in Toronto, and he was also popular among humans as the Night Crawler, host of a syndicated radio show. Not someone to be taken lightly.
"Nick, you were going to drain Natalie by accident and then kill yourself over it, I saved you both," Lacroix said nonchalantly. Nick looked at Lacroix and shook his head. He could never hurt Natalie. Lacroix smirked and reminded Nick of another mortal female whom he loved many, many centuries ago and accidentally killed while trying to turn her into a vampire. Nick flinched and Lacroix nodded. The vampire master must often step in to save the rookie vampire from himself. When will Nick ever learn? Lacroix is fond of Nick, but the undead dude lacks brains, for real.
"What do I do now?" Nick asked, his expression contrite. Lacroix smiled and leaned back in the chair. Natalie rested on the bed, seemingly dead, but both vampires knew better. Once a person is bitten by a vampire and also consumes vampire blood, it can take them several hours or perhaps a day or two before they rise as a new member of club undead. Lacroix turned Nick when he was known as Nicholas De Brabant in France, eight centuries ago. Nick seems to have gotten duller in modern times but Lacroix is more than ready to provide him with the guidance and discipline he needs. Vampire fledglings need vampire masters.
