Renan had made an early start on his journey from Lunah to the Guild headquarters right on the borders of Talnor, The Great City State. It was called that because it took up nearly an entire quarter of the continent of Erosia. It was seemingly nothing but an endless array of buildings where people lived worked and everything in between. It was almost like the Ferrolands if not for the lack of airships and other machinery to get around. All Talnor had was a massive train system, and using the description of massive was underselling it. The sheer amount of trains and different routes made the locomotive industry the top employer of that region and one of the biggest in all the continent.
There was a lot of money to be made, both legitimately and not-so-legitimately, in Talnor, which is why it made perfect sense to put the Guild's headquarters right on the borders. To the uneducated, it would seem like suicide considering was a guild of thieves and the police force of "the city" was more akin to an army. However the department's jurisdiction was strictly the city and they had their hands filled with problems bigger than Guild Thieves, who tended to be what they wanted out of a criminal; quiet. They weren't tinkerers, they weren't mercenaries, and they liked to be quiet. In short the Guild was filled with professionals and professionals didn't cause problems for the police so they were akin to litterbugs. On an unofficial level of course.
Though Talnor had so quarrel with the thieves, others did however. Some thought that by being so close to the border it mean they also had protection courtesy of The Great City State. That wasn't true, jurisdiction at all. And those that realized that refused to believe the Guild's HQ was anywhere near Talnor. Why? Well the fact they couldn't find it of course. Everyone knew the size of the any of the individual Guilds was massive and thus their home base must be massive. After all it needed to house records, living quarters, supplies, equipment, arsenals and schools. Every single other one from the Assassin's Guild to the Chef's Guild had huge, sprawling home bases all across the continent. It was common belief among many that the base was either simply hidden or somewhere off continent.
In other words they out thought themselves. The Guild was indeed right on the borders of Talnor. However the only thing visible was the entrance. To all onlookers it was a general store, one of many on the borders and not a particularly spectacular one save for the absolutely delicious baguettes that could be purchased. However in the back there was a pathway down to the truth of the store, which was the Guild's headquarters. It was a sprawling underground system of what was once nothing more than caves but was now something very much akin to the world's largest manor. At maximum capacity it could fit thousands of people comfortably for a few years. Training centers and living quarters were abound as well as more than a few libraries and offices. There was trophy room as some of the greatest things ever stolen by members, kitchens and bathing rooms. Every luxury that could be imagined alongside books on every subject. It was the ultimate training ground for thieves.
That was Renan's destination and thankfully he knew the quickest route and hoped it would be clean and clear. While the walk would most likely be lonely, he knew of more than a few spots he would be able to stay and find some company for the night. However some nights he just might be looking for a good bed to sleep in considering he would have to cut through more rough terrain off the roads to properly respond to Krista's summons in a timely manner.
That was the situation he found himself in shortly after leaving Lunah. No sooner had he reached the first fork in the road than he reached the first point he had to go off road. The terrain wasn't too bad, just a wide open plain that would eventually take him up and over some small hills. In addition, if he remembered from his last bit of traveling in this part of Erosia, there was even a nice fresh water creek surrounded by fruit and nut trees as well as a few bushes that offered up wild strawberries should he so desire such things for a brief luncheon.
After about a half an hour of walking across the plains he saw the trees that lined the creek on either side. He also in the distance saw a figure approaching him. In his business, Renan usually saw fit to get ready for a quick escape when he noticed someone coming in his direction. However once the person came into better view, all the dread faded away.
Ursins were similar to lycanthropes in the sense they could change into animals, bears in the case of Ursins, and back to humans at will. They were not like werebears or werewolves that had no control of the transformations and even less like the demonic creatures known as skinwalkers. Ursins were a rather delightful folk, none more so in Renan's experience than Connor Arctos; a large, mountain of a man who just happened to be approaching him on the Eastern side.
"Renan Voleur!" Connor said upon his approach. "Of all the souls I would expect to run into on my journey in this particular area, you were not one of them. Then again, if anyone were to know of such shortcuts it would be another thief." The pair shook and and embraced. "And if you're on this particular path on this particular shortcut I can only assume you got the same summons I did."
"Krista contacted you as well?" Renan asked.
"No, for me it was Sartorian. But I'm guessing my summons was just as urgent yet mysterious as yours. So how about we make haste...to the creek for a quick meal of berries, nuts and honey?"
Renan agreed to the plan and now the pair began to close the distance between themselves and the creek. However as they got closer and closer to the source of their nourishment they found that they were going be joining a party already in progress, and not a necessarily welcoming one. Renan gave Connor a look and they split up, going in different directions to ensnare the group.
What had this group of five men done to invite such a reaction? They seemed to be cornering a young woman and more often then not when the numbers were like that the ones in the majority had very little in the way of good intentions.
"Ho there friends!" Renan said upon his approach. He had finally gotten an even better view of the action unfolding and it turns out, going on looks alone, of the intent of the quintet of ne'er-do-wells. Of course, that was the polite description of the group of men. They all looked like even the scurviest of sea dogs fresh from months on the open sea would insist they take a three-day-long bath to spare their nostrils.
There was a surprise however, and that was the comely wench they had been approaching with their devilry. She was brunette, beautiful and bountiful, her breasts practically spilling out of the corset vest she wore over her dress. She also seemed to come from the Eastern lands, or at the very least her family did. The fair maiden also seemed to be capable of defending herself considering the small dagger she had out. From the way she gripped it he could tell that it was a weapon she was proficient with.
"Who the 'ell are you?" the leader of the group said, his accent somehow filthier than his stringer brown hair.
