Monster Girl Quest: Aftermath - Leviathan

Anders grimaced in pain, clutching his left arm; it must have been broken, the lancing stabs coursing through his bone and muscle making that clear enough.

He pushed himself up the deck of his shattered fishing boat, feeling the tug towards the sea thanks to the angle it was at, smashed upon the rocks.

He couldn't see his fellow crew or his captain, having escaped on the only rowboat or thrown themselves into the sea to try and escape their assailants.

Monstrous pirates, fishlike and wicked, they'd beset the fishing boat of about a dozen men looking for riches and when they found nothing, they tried to take the men, their ambush smashing the small vessel upon a coral reef beneath the cliffs of Noah's northern coast.

The captain thought, since the war with Heaven ended, it'd be a good time to test Sentora's northern waters for a good bounty, though he was loathe to go too near Hellgondo even still. He thought they'd be safe near the Noah Region, as long as they did not anger any monsters with their fishing.

He was wrong; though they had not trespassed, it seemed there was still lingering chaos in the aftermath of the war, even several months on... and in that time, certain monstrous individuals took the opportunity to prey on vulnerable seafarers for more than just their semen or flesh.

Unfortunately, that was all they had to give as fishermen.

He didn't know if his comrades had escaped or were even still alive... the shark-like woman, akin to a mermaid but far more terrifying and psychotic in her smile, slowly creeping towards him from the water lapping at the splintered edge of the half of the ship he remained on, giving him little hope.

"C'mon, little man, just give it up~" she taunted with a sickly sweet tone, her toothy grin showing off her rather sharp pearly whites. "Give it up now, and I'll make sure you have a lot of fun as I drain you dry~"

He was more worried she was going to devour him, Anders clenching his blue eyes in pain, his sun-kissed skin scraped here and there from wood splinters.

The shark woman's blue body was bare, but her beauty and nudity did little to distract Anders, trying to push his slim but fit body further up the slanting deck, but soon, he hit the bow railing, and had nowhere to go. His white shirt and beige pants were ripped, his shoes were missing, blood trickled from his head where a wayward grab from one of the other monsters tore out a patch of his short, messy brown hair.

He didn't think these injuries were going to join the several other minor scars around his body... he didn't think he was going to live that long.

Still, he glared defiantly at the shark woman; he was not going to beg for his life.

"Well, guess it just makes it more fun for me, I like defiant prey~ Just make sure to thrash for me~"

She cackled evilly, and using her shark-like tail as a spring, she lunged at him with teeth bared and hands reaching forth, face wild and wicked.

He clenched his eyes shut and waited for the violation.

There was a sickening crack as flesh was impacted and more bone broken.

Anders cracked one eye open; it was not his body that had been struck.

He just saw the form of the shark woman sailing through the air, smacking off a nearby rock poking out of the water, as a large, blue-bodied form loomed over him, a long serpentine tail snaking over the edge of the ruined boat.

The shark woman leaned against the rock, clutching a deep slash near her shoulder, blood pouring from it.

They glared at the newcomer, but there was no baleful malice and cruelty on their face, only wide-eyed shock and teeth-clenching fear.

"Leave," the newcomer spoke, Anders able to spot a golden spear with a blade at its end, like a broad glaive, strange indecipherable writing engraved onto the sides.

Its overall shape and the length of its handle, relative to the size of its wielder, made it look almost like a very fancy, very mean shovel... especially given the red staining the sharp edges.

The shark woman looked like they wanted to protest, but quickly thought better of it, and retreated, a cloud of red dispersing into the disturbed water as they disappeared.

Soon the only sound was the lapping of the waves at the splintered boat, the creaking of its increasingly unsound integrity, and the pounding of Anders' own heart.

The newcomer monster then turned to face him, twisting around on their serpentine lower half, holding their spear down in a less threatening position.

He was taken by her stern beauty; her cold, calm face regarded him without emotion, deep blue eyes staring into him.

Her skin was silky smooth and a very pale blue, almost grey in colour. Solid blue hair flowed from her head, reaching down past her hips, just as perfect as her skin, though there was a parting in the middle of her brow where two golden jewel-like orbs, about twice the size of the tip of his thumb each, sat in vertical alignment.

Her head overall was angular, and her lips were thin, but quite soft looking, not that Anders was expecting a kiss from her... not any that would end well.

Instead of ears, she sported a pair of large, fanning fin-like organs, pink in colour, angled up slightly, their tips drooping a little.

Her shoulders were covered in rather pronounced, ridged scales, only slightly paler than her hair, partially covering the bottom edges of her neck and upper arms. All her scales were the same colour, such as her hands and wrists, scaly and perhaps a little reptilian, her nails like long, silvery claws, and sharp just looking at them.

She wore a golden bangle on the arm she held the glaive with, and just below her neck, resting on her chest, was a piece of golden jewellery, a large, semi-circular piece with an intricate design within that Anders did not recognise.

Her bust... her bust was sizeable. Each breast might have been as big as her head, given her stature; if they were to align themselves at the hips, his face would be looking into her clavicle. And capping each breast was a pert nipple, a shade of ocean blue.

Speaking of her hips, large, sharp and pronounced diamond-shaped scales grew up the sides of her waist from them, partially covering the edges of her belly, though leaving an area around her crotch exposed, a long, narrow slit at least a foot in length visible.

Growing out from where her hips met with her long, wide serpentine lower half were spiky protrusions, at least three on either side and increasing in length from bottom to top, with a set of small blue fines growing from the root of the top-most spikes.

The entire top-half of the tail was divided into large segmented plates of the same blue as her scales, a spiky ridge running the centreline the whole way to the tip of the tail, which he saw slowly rising out of the water behind the boat, sporting two large, white fanning fins on either side of it.

Back to her front, the edge of the hardened blue scales came together beneath that long slit in a sort of V-shape, completely isolating the rest of her silky body from the pale white, softer underbelly of her serpentine half, similarly segmented, but looking far less firm.

She was beautiful, terrible, and magnificent to behold, and just as frightening.

Then, her expression softened, and she reached out to Anders with her other hand.

"Do not fear, I will take you to safety," she assured him.

Her voice... it was low, authoritative, but soothing and beautiful. Was she a siren?

He was hesitant at first, he did not know if he could trust her. But there wasn't much else he could do in his present condition.

He tried to reach out, and grunted in pain from his broken arm.

The monster gave a sympathetic look, and then reached down to help him up, carefully snaking her free arm beneath his shoulders.

"There, I have you," she said, holding him against her body, his head perilously close to pressing to the side of her bust.

He did his best not to ogle.

"The others?" he asked.

She gave him an apologetic look and shook her head.

"I do not know... I fear they have been taken. There may be hope to get them back, those monsters will take their time, but I must get you to safety first. There is a place nearby, you should be able to rest there."

It was not a comforting answer, Anders daring not to think about what those piratical monsters were doing to his fellow crew.

The new monster slipped into the sea, keeping her charge close as they left the wrecked fishing boat behind, the monster deftly slicing a fishing net in two to clear her way.

She swam at speed beneath the cliffs of Northern Noah, heading west, deftly meandering through jagged rocks and reefs, until she came to a stop at a fairly nondescript section of cliff.

She looked down at him.

"Hold your breath for as long as you can," she commanded.

"What?!" he blurted out.

"Please... trust me, I do not wish to do you ill," she again reassured.

Part of Anders could not bring himself to believe her. It was all too convenient.

And yet, her voice, commanding, but gentle, made him do so, and he nodded.

"Good. Hold tight."

He did so... and felt the rush of water as she dove beneath the surface.

He didn't know where he was going, holding onto her body desperately, his eyes clenched shut, and his breath slowly dwindling.

He could feel how fast she was going though, the water pulling on him, though it did not seem to hinder her.

His lungs started to burn, and pain was spreading throughout his body, only able to cling with one arm.

He felt the monster twist and turn this way and that, but he dare not open his eyes... but the fire in his chest was worsening, and he was starting to lose focus.

Then, he felt his head burst through the water's surface. He took a deep, reflexive breath, and was gently deposited upon a smooth, rocky surface, a little slimy, but flat enough he wasn't at risk of slipping back into the water.

He coughed a little, and panted hard, the ache in his chest and his arms not making him comfortable. But soon, he regained his composure, and carefully rolled himself into a sitting position, looking around the space he was in.

It was some cave, accessible only through that underwater tunnel. It wasn't a huge space, but large enough, and well lit by strange mineral veins running through the roof of the cavern, glowing with a bright, blue luminance, the reflection of water dancing across the rough ceiling and casting beautiful shapes upon the smoother walls.

The air was oddly clean and fresh within, it did not feel stale like he expected such an air pocket to be.

The stalagmites and stalactites around were smooth and seemed streaked with a silvery blue mineral.

And trickling through a smooth crack in the back wall was clear blue water, filling a natural-formed basin.

The entire space seemed... mystical and pure.

It almost distracted Anders from the pain in his arm, but he couldn't ignore it, wincing and clutching his broken arm with a grunt, balling the hand on that side into a fist.

However, he watched the monster that brought him here seat herself upon the edge of the water, leaving her tail within it to gently swish around. She sighed, and leaned her glaive against the wall, before turning to face Anders, arms held before her groin.

"I am Leviathan," she announced. "You are?"

"Anders," he answered, knowing better than to test her patience, but for her cool, commanding demeanour, she did not seem to harbour outward ill-will for him. He looked around nervously. "... thank you."

"I did what I felt was right," she said. "I'm happy to see you're well."

She looked away pensively.

"I just wish I had come earlier. I might have been able to save more of you."

She sighed, and Anders remained in quiet, gently rubbing his broken arm, tender though it was. The pain was still intense, but the cool, soothing atmosphere of the cave was helping somewhat.

Leviathan then turned to him, and held out her hand.

"How bad is your arm?"

Anders tried to move it, and grimaced in pain.

"Bad," he grunted, and Leviathan retracted her hand.

"I see... please, wait here. I

will

return for you. And feel free to drink from the pool by the wall... that water is some of the freshest you will ever taste outside of Undine's Spring."

Without further word, Leviathan slipped gracefully into the water, her bulk barely disturbing the surface.

He was alone now, and he felt less comfortable than before.

The fisherman turned to the small basin that pooled with water, and crawled over to it. With his good arm, he cupped water to his mouth and sipped it down.

It was cool, smooth, refreshing. He'd never tasted water so pure before, so sweet. He splashed some onto his broken arm, and some of the pain faded. It still hurt a great deal, but there was some relief.

He sighed, and wondered what this place was, what made it feel so magical.

Before long, Leviathan returned, emerging from the edge of the pool, water running down her sensual frame. Anders couldn't help looking before doing his best not to.

But he saw what she had in her hands, lengths of seaweed woven into simple ropes.

She slithered over to him, and commanded him to hold out his arm.

He did so, and watched as she put his arm in a simple sling, alleviating a little more of the pain.

"There. That should hold you until you see a human doctor. Alas, I... am not one for mending things. I am a warrior before I am a healer."

He tugged on the seaweed sling; despite what it was made of, it seemed surprisingly sturdy.

"Thank you," he said, and sat down next to Leviathan, feeling oddly comforted in her presence.

Still, there was some nervousness... she was a large monster, and though there was supposed to be a peace between monsters and mankind now... clearly not all of them believed that.

Leviathan took notice.

"I frighten you," she remarked.

"What?! No, no, not at all!" Anders blurted out.

"If there are two things I hate, it is being taken for a fool, and liars... but I will not hold it against you. You have every right to be wary, given what has happened, and you do not know me. And even then, few would be able to stand in my presence and not feel intimidated."

"I guess... you do look a little scary," he admitted. "Beautiful, but frightening in some ways. Like the sea."

She cast him a knowing look.

"I have always admired the seafarers of your folk. They cannot breathe in water, they do not have fins or eyes for the murk, they cannot rise from the depths at speed. The ocean is not a realm for humans. And yet, you brave it all the same, and many of you have a just respect for the sea."

"Even if it doesn't respect us," he added. "But we understand that the sea has no master."

"Such is true for monsters too. Even the Queens, Kraken and Poseidoness, do not will the ocean to do as they command. They simply rule over the seas, but they are not their master either. Alas, it seems that many of their 'subjects' believe similarly about themselves."

"Well, you made that one shark leave without much of a fight. I'd say they're not above respecting authority."

"Respecting

power

," Leviathan corrected. "She knew that she was no match for me."

"I guess you're a pretty strong monster, huh?"

"My power rivals that of the two ocean Queens," she stated matter-of-factly, prompting Anders' mouth to purse open in shock.

"You mean... you're a..."

"A powerful monster, suffice to say," Leviathan confirmed. "And it was my duty to patrol the seas around Hellgondo itself, to ensure no human found a way past its cliffs, or even tried some mad folly in climbing them."

She then sighed, and looked into the pool as if looking into some distant horizon.

"But now there is peace between mankind and monsters... or there should be. I do not have a domain like the Queens, so I have no royal duties. Thus, I sought to keep the peace where the other Queens could not, as focused as they are on calming the chaos of their domains in the wake of the war. That's how I came across you and your ship in need... but I cannot be everywhere. The unknown fate of your comrades is proof of that."

She seemed... dejected, and it caught Anders off guard, taking some of the edge away from his renewed fear of her.

"You... don't hate humans?" he ventured cautiously.

She shook her head.

"I have never hated humans. There is goodness and evil in them, no different to monsters, even if monsters have certain penchants based on their race. But there are exceptions. However, if you think I have never killed humans, dispel that notion. I have consumed men before. But only ever for heinous crimes upon the sea. Pettier transgressions simply receive my ire and forceful removal from the ocean. Innocent humans, I could not bring myself to harm, even if it was my duty for simple trespass."

Anders was a little disquieted by her admittance of having slain humans before, though he did believe her that they were deserving.

"Well, again... thank you for rescuing me, for what it's worth."

"No, thank you. At least I saved one person this day."

She sighed quietly, looking into the water again.

For one as mighty as she seemed, and as frightening, he felt sorry for her. Clearly she believed she'd failed today, and it was weighing on her.

He decided to change the subject.

"What is this place?"

Leviathan raised a brow.

"This place? It is one of several sanctuary caves. Even at their cruellest and most violent, the seas do not visit their wrath in these havens. Some say they were made and blessed by an ancient goddess monster of the sea, for any seagoing monster to seek shelter in. The only ones I know of are around Hellgondo and Northern Sentora."

"That explains why this place feels... magical," he stated.

"It's a sacred place, and humans rarely set foot in here. Some would say it profane to allow a human in such a place. But if it is supposed to be a sanctuary, then so it shall be for all in need."

Anders looked at Leviathan quietly, taking in everything about her; he was a simple fisherman, having a conversation with a Queen monster, among the most powerful creatures in the world.

It made him nervous, yet he felt no fear from her.

She then stretched, and grabbed her glaive.

"Come, we must get you home," she stated. "You will not heal in here."

He nodded, though there was some disappointment; he was rather enjoying talking to Leviathan.

"Very well. I suppose we shan't be seeing each other after this," he surmised.

Leviathan shrugged her shoulders.

"I don't know. Perhaps not. But I must set my sights on tracking down your fellows, if there is still hope for them."

He frowned, feeling guilty; he had given them up for lost, yet this monster had not.

"I see. Then, I won't waste your time further."

Leviathan nodded, and beckoned for him to come to her, the monster taking a hold of him with one arm, and strongly at that.

"Hold your breath," she commanded, and once more, they dove beneath the water, Leviathan doing her best to be easy on him.

It had been two weeks since that encounter, Leviathan carrying him over the sea and leaving him on a beach near his little fishing village. He walked back the village, and sought out treatment with the doctor. However, the loss of the ship he worked on and all its hands but him proved to be a terrible blow to the village. Many feared to go out on the water again, as sightings of pirates, both human and monster, had increased, and with the biggest ship splintered beneath the cliffs of Sentora, the skiffs that remained just weren't enough to sustain the village... especially without people to use them.

And with Leviathan never returning with the other men, it seemed like the only hope was to move.
