"Stay with me, Sergeant Barnes," Chun-Li whispered to her companion as they rushed through the side-streets of downtown Tokyo.
"Yeah," Bucky said, rubbing his temple with his non-robotic hand. "I'm with you."
There are many women in this world who can run in heels, even when they are running from the shadowy criminal organization known as Shadaloo. Chun-Lin was not one of them. In fact, as soon as she had been caught in the penthouse suite of a hotel trying to steal one of their greatest assets, the first thing she did was kick off her shoes and run barefoot.
The asset here was James Buchanan Barnes. His friends call him Bucky, but others knew him as The Winter Soldier, a moniker from a bygone time when he was brainwashed and forced to kill and commit other atrocities for the Soviet Union. With the help of his friends, Bucky was able to break from the conditioning that kept him a slave, but recently, he had been reactivated by the criminal organization known as Shadaloo.
That was where Interpol agent Chun-Li entered the picture. Last week, she had been given information that The Winter Soldier had been seen in Tokyo, meeting with James Saito, one of M. Bison's lieutenants. She was also given a series of command phrases she could use to snap the man out of his trance.
The plan had gone smoothly at first: Chun-Li had disguised herself as a sex worker and walked into the hotel with a group of other women. She waded through the different rooms full of criminals from all over the world--many of whom she recognized--being serviced in various ways by these women until she came upon a room that was being guarded. After taking out the guards, she found Bucky inside. Immediately, the man had tried to kill her, which she expected, but he could do nothing before she said the words, "Wood will keep the fire burning for longer, but gas will make it hotter."
Bucky snapped to. He was disoriented but was willing to trust the beautiful Chinese woman before him. The blue, skin-tight dress that was cut high up the leg, showing off her thick, toned thighs certainly helped.
Almost immediately, Saito entered with his armed goons and opened fire upon them. Bucky, still armed, lobbed a grenade at them, which allowed the two of them to escape through a side-door and fight their way out of the hotel.
That all transpired 27 minutes ago. Since then, they'd been on the run.
Chun-Li suddenly came to a halt in an alleyway. "I need a second," she said, gasping for breath.
"Me too," Bucky said. He had looked behind them as they took a break, his hand hovering over his sidearm.
"Is it all starting to come back yet?" Chun-Li asked him. She watched him closely, still a little worried that he might snap at a moment's notice.
Bucky nodded. "A little."
Even though he had been unable to control his actions, he was beginning to regain some of his memory, having been through this kind of thing before.
"Good," Chun-Li replied. "My bosses are going to want to talk to you."
Bucky let out a dry, humorless laugh. "A lot of people will."
Suddenly, he doubled over in pain, clutching his head.
"Hey," Chun-Li said, going over to him. "You're okay."
He said something in Russian, then, that she didn't quite understand. What she did understand sounded like an insult about her father. She watched him like a hawk, ready to strike.
Before she could, though, he straightened out and put his metallic hand up. "Sorry. I'm sorry."
"It's okay," she said with a sigh of relief.
Pulling his sidearm from its holster, Bucky held it out to Chun-Li. "Take this. If I lose myself, I don't want to hurt you."
Chun-Li pushed it back with a smile. "I don't need a gun to take you down, Winter Soldier."
The man smiled and holstered it. "My friends call me 'Bucky'."
Chun-Li couldn't help but smile back at the man. "Ah, so now we are friends? You didn't seem very friendly when I found you in that hotel."
"Well, that was before you said the magic words," he replied.
"Do you have any other phrases I should know about?"
Bucky cocked an eyebrow. "What would you like me to do, exactly?"
Chun-Li reached up and pulled a strand of hair from her face, tucking it back into her bun. "I'm sure you are a man of many talents, Bucky."
Their gazes stayed on one another, ready to continue this bit of verbal sparring but a siren in the distance broke it.
"Where's this evac point, anyways?"
"Two miles south," Chun-Li said, refocusing. "At the top of the Kinsugi Building."
"Okay," he said and looked at the streets.
They were full, bustling with cars and foot-traffic. It would be safest to get in a car, but it could take a while to make it just two miles. It would be quicker to go by foot, although they would be out in the open more.
"Let's keep moving. If you're up for it."
Bucky nodded. "I'll be fine. Lead the way."
They stepped out of the alleyway, but suddenly saw a patrol of men wearing red patches depicting winged skulls.
"Bison's men," Bucky hissed.
"Quick," Chun-Li said, grabbing his arm. "In here."
She pulled him through the doors of a crowded market. It was a myriad of sights and sounds as the shoppers inside haggled with the owners, inspected produce, and tried to keep their children from wandering off, so Bucky and Chun-Li didn't draw too many stares.
They made it down an aisle full of canned goods until they came upon a set of swinging doors to the side and pushed through. This brought them to a back room full of storage shelves and a set of stairs.
They ran for the stairs before they caught the eyes of any employees and soon found themselves in a dimly-lit loft that overlooked the street. It was minimally furnished as if used to house people temporarily. Chun-Li peaked through the window and saw the soldiers fanning out.
"I think we may need to hide out here for a bit," she said. Bucky didn't respond. She turned and saw he was again doubled over. "Hey, Bucky. James Buchanan Barnes."
"I'm fine," he said, stifling a groan. After a moment, whatever was happening to him passed and he stood upright again, although he seemed to be spent from the exertion of retaining himself.
"Maybe we should move, considering your current condition. You could use some help."
Bucky wanted to protest, but knew she was right. "Yeah, but the streets are crawling. We'll get spotted immediately."
Chun-Li thought for a long time, pacing around the loft, until she came upon what looked like a window. It was a square portal that had been painted shut, but it didn't lead out to the outside. It led to the next building.
"Maybe we can move through the buildings," she said. "If all of these businesses are connected together, we should be able to follow them south until we get to the tower. Then we just make a break for it."
Bucky shrugged. "Sounds like as good of a plan as any."
Chun-Li went up to the window and tried to open it, but it didn't move.
"Here," Bucky said. He pulled a knife from his boot and offered it to Chun-Li.
Chun-Li took it and began to chisel around the base of the window. She tried pulling it open again and after some effort, it began to slide upward with a screech. Peeking her head inside, she saw a room with the same dimensions as the loft, but darker and with cardboard boxes filling much of it. Either way, it was open to them.
"I think we are in luck," she said, turning back to Bucky.
"Okay," he replied. "You lead the way. I'll take rear."
Chun-Li nodded and stuck her leg through. The hole was too small to be able to angle her whole body through, however, so she brought it out and peered inside. There was a box nearby, which she could place her hands on to help pull her whole body through, which she did. She made it halfway through, when she felt herself come to a stop. Her waist hit the top of the window, which jostled it and caused it to slide down onto her back.
"Uh oh," she said. She tried to pull herself back, but she couldn't. The window was tight on her. "Hey, Bucky, a little help?"
She waited and listened and heard him groaning again.
Bucky was on the floor, now. He had been able to fight back his conditioning for so long, but he could feel himself losing now. The voices, the training, everything was fighting to take control.
And although it was Bucky who fell to the floor, it was The Winter Soldier who stood back up. He took in his surroundings, unsure where he was, and then saw the woman, who was halfway through a window.
"Bucky, are you there?" the woman called out.
