"Good morning, Ms. Banxxx!" Piper said as she greeted her boss with a smile.
"Morning Piper." Naomi answered, with a straight face, as she approached the front desk. "How are you this morning?"
"I'm well!" Piper replied, cheerfully.
"Any messages?" Naomi asked.
"No messages. However, your husband called." Piper replied.
"Thanks. Did he leave any messages?" Naomi asked.
"Not really. He just told me to tell you that he had to leave on a business trip to Atlanta." Piper replied. "And that he'll be back tomorrow after dinner."
"Oh. Okay. I'll try to call him later." Naomi answered. "Oh and Piper? Please hold all my calls. I have a very important conference call to take. And it will last all morning."
"Okay, Ms. Banxxx. I'll take messages." Piper said. Naomi nodded.
Naomi walked past the front reception and approached her door. She opened the door and walked into her office. Naomi closed the door behind her. She walked to her desk and pulled out her chair. Naomi placed her briefcase on the desk. She opened her briefcase and took out some files and placed them on her desk, nest to her laptop. She then close her briefcase and placed it next to her desk. Naomi walked back to the door and removed her jacket. She grabbed a hanger off the hook and placed her jacket on the hanger. She then placed the hanger back on the hook.
Naomi walked back to her desk and sat on the chair. She turned on her laptop and waited while the machine started up. While she was waiting, there was a knock on the door.
"Come in." Naomi said.
The door opened and in walked Piper, holding a mug of steaming coffee.
"Why thank you, Piper!" Naomi said with a smile.
Piper headed for Naomi and put down the mug on the desk. "You're very welcome!" Piper replied. "Would there be anything else?" Piper asked.
"No." Naomi answered with a smile. "I'm fine now."
"Okay." Piper smiled, turned and headed for the door. She exited the office and closed the door behind her.
"What a great kid!" Naomi thought as she reached for her mug of coffee. She slowly took a slip of the hot coffee and put the mug back down.
"Okay. Where was I?" Naomi said to herself. "Oh yay."
Using the mouse, Naomi opened the Tommy Hilfiger folder. She then opened the file titled "Contract 2017". Naomi re-read the contract, making sure that all the pertinent information was there. Once she was satisfied with the verbiage, she reached for her mug and took another slip. She was ready for her presentation.
Naomi looked around her office and her gaze fell upon her degrees and awards. "Not too shabby." She thought.
Naomi grew up in the Bronx in a middle class neighbourhood. Her parents were both teachers. Her Mom was a Math teacher and her Father was an English teacher. She was the eldest child and had two brothers and one sister. One Brother relocated to California not too long ago to pursue his love for food and cooking. Her other Brother followed in their parents' footsteps and received his Bachelor's degree in Education from NYU and relocated across the Hudson to New Jersey. He teaches Math at a local high school. Naomi's sister decided to stay put and is currently enrolled at NYU in an Arts program.
Naomi has two degrees from NYU, a Bachelor's and a Master's in Business Marketing and Advertising. She worked for a very prestigious advertising company after graduation and has never looked back. Naomi decided to open her own advertising company five years ago and with her experience and knowledge, received many awards and accolades from the local businesses in the tri-state area.
Fifteen years ago, at a local advertising function, she met Lexington, a stock broker, also from New York and a very handsome man. They fell head over heels for each other. Ten years ago, they married and live in a suburb of NYC with their two children, a boy and a girl.
Now, Naomi is eyeing national and international businesses, starting with Tommy Hilfiger.
The phone suddenly rang. Naomi picked it up.
"Yes, Piper?" Naomi asked.
"It's your conference call, Ms. Banxxx!" Piper replied excitedly.
"Great! Put them through!" Naomi requested. "Hello! Banxxx Advertising. Naomi Banxxx speaking!"
"Yes. Good morning, Ms. Banxxx. Mr. James Deen, Vice President of Sales and Advertising from Tommy Hilfiger calling. How are you this fine morning?"
"I am well. And you?" Naomi answered.
"I am great!" Mr. Deen replied. "I was just going over your proposed contract with Mr. Hilfiger before calling you and he likes what he sees!"
"That is fantastic!" Naomi said, excitedly.
"Do you have the contract in front of you?" Mr. Deen asked.
"Indeed, I do, Sir!" Naomi replied.
"There is a very small change that Mr. Hilfiger would like you to consider. If you turn to page 3, about halfway down the page, it states the delivery date. Do you see that?' Mr. Deen said.
Naomi scrolled down to page 3. "I do." she said.
"Well, Mr. Hilfiger would like to see if you can deliver in three months rather than four. Will that be an issue?" Mr. Deen asked. "The reason is simple, really. He would like to be ahead of schedule for the fall collection!'
Naomi thought about the new delivery date. "Wow! It's going to be tight!"
"Ms. Banxxx? Any issue with the new date?" Mr. Deen asked again.
"I can do this! I have to do this!" Naomi thought. She then replied, "I do not see any problems with the new delivery date, Mr. Deen!"
"Very good, Ms. Banxxx! We have a deal then!" Mr. Deen said.
Naomi jumped out of her seat. "Absolutely! We do!" she answered with joy. Naomi was grinning from ear to ear.
"If you could make that small change and e-mail me the revised contract ASAP, I'll will make sure that Mr. Hilfiger signs it today. I will then e-mail the signed copy back to you before the end of business today." Mr. Deen explained.
"Consider it done, Mr. Deen! And thank you so much!" Naomi replied as she did a fist pump. "I cannot tell you how much this means to me!"
"Thank you, Ms. Banxxx!" Mr. Deen replied. "Our partnership will indeed help both firms!"
"Thank you!" Naomi replied. "Indeed it will!"
"Bye for now, Ms. Banxxx." Mr. Deen said.
"Bye for now and have a great day, Mr. Deen!" Naomi replied. She then hung up the phone.
Naomi let out a huge yell as she threw her head back and raised both hands into the air with jubilation. "Yes! Yes! Yes!"
The door opened and Piper poked her head in. She said, "Ms. Banxxx? Is everything alright?"
With a grin from ear to ear, Naomi exclaimed, "Everything is absolutely fantastic! We did it!"
"You got the deal!" Piper exclaimed. "Congrats Ms. Banxxx!"
"We got the deal!" Naomi exclaimed as she rushed to Piper and gave her a big hug. "Thank you coming in on your day off and typing up the contract!"
"You're very welcome, Ms. Banxxx!" Piper replied as she hugged Naomi back.
"Please call me Naomi!" Naomi said as she released her hold. "What time is it?"
"It's eleven forty-five, Naomi." Piper added.
"Lunch time! My treat!" Naomi said. "When we get back, there a small change to the contract I want you do."
"But I brought my lunch." Piper replied. "What's the change?"
"Save it for tomorrow!" Naomi replied. "We need to update the delivery date. That's all!"
"I'll put it in the fridge." Piper said. "Okay. Sounds easy enough."
"Great!" Naomi said. "You put your lunch in the fridge and I'll call Lexington with the good news. And then we'll go!"
Naomi gave Piper a quick hug.
"Sounds great! See you out front!" Piper replied.
Piper exited the office and closed the door behind her. Naomi sat down for a minute to collect herself. She was still ecstatic from the news. Once she calmed down, Naomi picked up the phone and dialed Lexington's cell number. She let it ring for a while and then it went to voice mail.
"Hello. You have reached Lexington Steele. I am unable to answer the phone right now but if you would kindly leave a message after the beep, I'll get back to you as soon as possible. Thank you and have a wonderful day!" Beep!
Naomi decided to leave a message. "Hey Sweetheart! We did it! We got Tommy! How's Atlanta? Call me later! Love ya! Bye!" She thought it strange that Lexington didn't answer. However she thought nothing of it and hung up the phone.
"Usually, he answers right away when he sees my name pop up. Oh well. He must be busy. I call him after lunch." Naomi thought. She got up from her desk and walked to the door. Naomi retrieved her jacket and put it on. She then opened the door and exited her office. Naomi closed the door behind her.
As she headed to the front reception, Naomi noticed that Piper was ready and waiting for her.
"What a great kid! I'll have to give her a raise! She'll like that!" Naomi thought to herself.
"Shall we go?" Naomi said as she approached Piper.
Piper turned around and said, "Sure! Let's go!"
Both women headed for the front door. Piper went out first and held the door open for Naomi. Naomi thanked Piper for holding the door open for her as she exited the building. Naomi took Piper to her favourite restaurant.
After lunch was over, Naomi asked for the bill. She excused herself and went outside. Naomi pulled out her cell and called Lexington again. Still no answer because the call went to voice mail. Naomi didn't leave a message this time. Puzzled, she put her cell phone away and headed back into the restaurant.
"That's weird." Naomi said as she pulled out her chair and sat down.
"What's weird, Naomi?" Piper asked.
"Still no answer from Lexington." Naomi replied. "The number I dialed is correct but it keeps going to voice mail. What time did he call this morning?"
"At about nine." Piper replied.
"He told me last night that he had to be in the office early this morning for a breakfast meeting. So, when I woke up, he had already left the house." Naomi added. "I was running late because I had to drop the kids at school because their bus broke down."
"Oh. I see." Piper replied.
At the same time, the waiter showed up with the check and placed it on the table.
"May I offer you ladies anything else? Coffee? Tea?" the waiter asked.
Naomi looked at Piper and saw that Piper, with a slight smile, was eyeing the waiter.
"No. I think that will be all. Thank you." Naomi answered.
Naomi picked up her purse, opened it and pulled out a credit card. She placed the card onto the check tray.
