I'm sure you can relate to the fact that like almost every mother, our hero's is sometimes intrusive, confusing, condescending, overbearing, and manipulative. If you recognize those I'm sure you could name a few other rude titles that go with the job of motherhood. However, that isn't to say that your mother, nor our hero's isn't kind, loving, caring, and supportive. In other words, she has our hero's best interests at heart. I know that she loves him in ways that only a mother can.

If you haven't expressed how appreciative you are for all of the things your mother has done for you over the years, you might want to pay attention to my story, and then call her up. If your mother is anything like most of them, she is working tirelessly behind the scenes to help make your life the best it can be. In the case of Mitchell's mother, (Our story's real but unsung heroine by the way) he owes her his sincere thanks for her most devious and risky plot ever.

Of course, I don't feel any devious scheme should go unnoticed, even though in her modesty she would happily go to her grave believing that her actions were completely anonymous. Please don't tell her that I told you her secret, she would probably be embarrassed.

Mitchell Conway or Mitch grew up wanting to be like Dad, so he went to school and became the best lawyer in his class. He was hired right out of school into one of New York's most prestigious law firms. (Mitch could have worked for his dad, but wanted to earn what he had.) He spent the next three months working fifteen hours a day preparing for a very public lawsuit between two feuding celebrities.

Although the case was in Mitch's opinion 'frivolous', he accepted the case that his bosses dumped on him. He won so overwhelmingly that his client gave him a personal tip of ten percent of the awarded value of the case, in addition to the firm's fees. He smiled, accepted the seven-hundred-thousand dollar check, walked into the partner's closed-door meeting, and explained that while he appreciated the opportunities offered him, he felt that the last three months had been the worst of his life. Quitting, he packed the few personal items in his office and went home to his wife Beth.

Bethany or Beth met Mitch at freshman orientation. They went for coffee, ended up at Beth's apartment, and spent the next several days studying human anatomy. Beth recognizing Mitch for the catch that he was, set her sights on him like a laser-guided smart bomb and blew his mind like only a virgin's mind could be.

Although his parents disapproved thoroughly and openly, they couldn't dissuade their son from marrying her within the year. In truth Mitch's father didn't try very hard, recognizing that the young woman had swimsuit model looks and figured she could make him happy. That didn't mean he didn't see her as a social climber and insisted they agree to a crushing prenuptial.

Beth wasn't thrilled with the news that her perfect man, her Adonis, her celebrity attorney husband, wouldn't practice law anymore. She did calm down quickly though, once she saw his bonus check and realized that they could live comfortably for several years while he figured out what he wanted to do with his life. Nor did it take her long to remember that her Adonis would look just as good above her as he always had; unemployed or not.

In the meantime, Mitch's best friend Pam (Pamela to her parents, Ella to Mitch), was forced to come to grips with the fact that he had chosen to marry someone else. Despite having grown up together, despite her believing that she had given him enough hints that even a blind man could see, despite a hundred conversations with his mother on the subject, he couldn't see that she loved him.

Throughout their entire lives, they had never been apart for more than a few hours at a time. Their mothers had bumped their tummies together to introduce the kids before they were even born. They played together, took naps together, were even bathed together when they were young. They went all the way through school together. Their families even took vacations together. Although forced to do so, she recognized that she wanted his happiness more than her own, and genuinely wished them well.

Two years later she found herself in genuine like with a guy that seemed to worship the ground she walked on. He was a little too 'bumpy' for her taste. She preferred the 'ripped' look that Mitch had to Andrew's bodybuilder physique, but he was kind and treated her well. Soon 'genuine like' grew to love and she accepted when Drew eventually asked her to marry him.

Andrew Owensby thought he had died and gone to heaven the day he first saw Pam. Great body and was so cute he couldn't keep his eyes off her. He worked hard to get her to go out with him, especially when he always seemed to have at least two co-eds pawing at him. Frustrated but determined, Drew's seeking of Pam forced him to be much more discreet. His habit of taking at least one new girl to his bed each week was impacted significantly but he felt she would be worth it and they were married soon after graduation.

Although the four had become very tight friends, and Pam never once said anything to indicate he was her second choice, Drew always had a feeling that Mitch was a rival for her affections.

Soon after Mitch's disclosure, the group was sitting around the pool at Pam's parent's house. As they talked about Mitch having given up his career, it was suggested that they all take a trip to forget the problems of the day. Because they hadn't gotten the chance to celebrate graduation, it was decided that they should just pick a spot and go. While researching travel plans, they all discovered that it was rather fun to plan vacations and soon the thought of opening their own travel agency turned into a serious discussion.

By New Year's Eve, 'There and Back Again' was open for business. Four equal partners, except for Mitch getting the first half-million of the profits due to his investment at startup.

Things were tight at first, but then the desire for expansion brought outside investment (namely Bridge International).

As the business grew, they were doing so well that Mitch hadn't worried about taking out what he was owed, preferring to build up his shares in B.I.

Four years later, a little luck and a lot of hard work made a surprise visit from Poseidon Cruise Line possible.

......................................................

Beth smiled to herself as she walked past Drew's office door on her way to her husband's. Her thoughts flashed briefly on the memory of Drew's hand as he grabbed a covert but lingering squeeze of her left butt cheek at last evening's barbeque. Her thoughts returned to work as she caught sight of her husband's PA eyeing her as she walked up the hall.

The offices took up the top two floors of a fourteen-story building across the Hudson from Manhattan. Theirs was far from being the most prestigious travel agency in the world but they were making headway. They now had clients from all over the country and quite a few from 'across the pond' as it were. For the most part, they had chosen to work directly with corporate accounts, forgoing storefronts altogether.

Of course, it didn't hurt being a subsidiary of Bridge International. B.I. seemed to have unlimited capital and her husband Mitch always seemed to have a smile on his face when he came back from board meetings.

"Mrs. Conway," began her husband's PA. "Mr. Conway is in with Mrs. Ownsby. Can I get you anything?"

"No thank you, Tracy I won't be long. And as I've said before, please call me Beth," she stated as she proceeded past, pushing the half-open office door the rest of the way open.

"Anything you say, Mrs. Conway," responded Tracy.

"Hay, Beth," said Mitch, as he smiled and stood to greet his wife. "We were just trying to decide who we should send to Cancun for the Hyatt review."

"That's easy, send Ashley" came the quick reply.

Mitch and Pam looked at each other. "Why?" both asked at the same time.

"The review for the Cancun Hyatt is important enough that you can't send a new agent but being a Hyatt we pretty much know what to expect. That means you don't need to send a senior agent or one of us. Logically, we should send a mid-level agent from the normal rotation. Don is next on the list, but he requested we hold off on any more trips until after his sister's wedding. Ashley is the next mid-level agent in the rotation after Don, so send Ashley."

"I guess that's settled," agreed Pam. "The next order of business is who gets to call Senator Brickman and tell him that the Our Lucaya Resort only has two rooms left for the week of his birthday. We can offer him a whole floor on Paradise Island instead. I don't think he'll mind the switch but the agent who booked him refuses to call him back with the bad news. She said his PA is 'a true and total dick'." The last was spoken with a hint of amusement and accompanied by air quotes.

Mitch spoke first. "I vote for Drew, he won't mind."

Beth disagreed, "Drew is too blunt. You should do it, Sweetheart. You're the most diplomatic. No offense Pam, but you know I'm right."

Pam was about to agree when Tracy walked in accompanied by a package carrier.

"I'm sorry to interrupt, but he refused to let me sign for the package."

"Mitchell Conway?" asked the carrier.

After Mitch confirmed his identity, which required a photo ID and a signature, the carrier pulled a large sealed shipping envelope from his bag and handed it to him. Once Tracy had apologized a second time and pulled the door three-quarters closed again, Mitch noticed the envelope had passed through several countries on its way to him. He commented to the women and then pulled the embedded nylon cut string, opened the outer envelope, and glanced in before pulling out a thick contract and cover letter.

Mitch began reading the cover letter out loud. "Mr. Conway, allow me to introduce myself. I am Vasco Tavani. I represent the Poseidon Cruise Line's promotions department. Your agency is one of ten who are finalists to be given exclusive booking rights for our two ships the Eurybia, and Galene.

"Our ships are for the wealthy elite, carrying no more than one hundred passengers each, in fifty opulently appointed staterooms. Both ships have a pool, two dining halls, four open bars, a ballroom, theater, casino, business center, complete fitness center w/trainers, full spa, as well as a private chef and butler for each stateroom.

"Individual chefs attend to each stateroom's guests regardless of whether or not they eat privately or in the dining halls. Menus are individualized to the guest's taste before setting sail but can be modified to almost anything they may request. If needed we can have items flown in by helicopter to any of the ports of call, including our private island resort."

Mitch paused and asked for Drew to join the group, before continuing to read the cover letter. "To continue to be considered, your agency will need to send its top two officers or owners and their spouses (or significant others) to experience our cruise packages firsthand.

"One couple will travel on the Eurybia, and the other on the Galene. The cruises are thirteen days each, including a four-night stay at our private island and its five-star resort situated near the midpoint of each cruise. Once you have experienced a cruise for yourselves we are sure you will be excited to be granted exclusive rights to our bookings.

"If you will take note of page seventy-four of the contract, your company's payment for each booking will be seven percent of the double occupancy ticket. The full rate is one hundred thousand Euros, Gold Member pricing is ninety-two thousand five-hundred Euros and the Diamond Member rate is eighty-five thousand Euros. Gold membership is thirty thousand Euros for a ten-year membership, while the Diamond membership is only fifty thousand Euros for ten years.

"Any pricing you set outside of these ranges will be taken from your share. Single occupancies are not given discounts. No passengers under the age of consent or the legal drinking age (whichever is higher) for each passenger's country of origin will be allowed.

"R.S.V.P. by returning the signed preliminary contract before the close of business, on the day of this notification. Once your agency responds with the names of those who will travel, itineraries will be sent including assigned air and cruise tickets within two business days. That way you will have time to plan your other business needs around the schedule.

"Deviations from itineraries will not be allowed and will eliminate your firm from the competition. A detailed letter explaining why your firm should be granted this exclusive privilege is required, and each passenger will be expected to fill out questionnaires for each leg of the cruise.

"While on board you are to present yourselves as independently wealthy couples and not as representatives of your agencies. If needed, a wardrobe upgrade is highly recommended. The reason for this ruse is so that you are not afforded any special treatment, nor will you interfere with the experiences of the other passengers.

"A small group of crew and resort staff are aware that the ten companies vying for the contract will be traveling within the next two months but will not have any other information. If they become aware of the special circumstances of your travel, your firm will be disqualified.

"He gives contact information, but nothing else. What do you think guys? It sounds highly unusual to me."

There was a pause before the group of friends and partners began to voice their opinions. Pam spoke first. "I think this is either a great opportunity for major profit or a scam. Since we have to R.S.V.P within the next few hours, that doesn't even give Mitch a chance to examine the contract properly. Plus I didn't even know we were being looked at for this. Although, I have heard of Poseidon Cruise Lines. They are very exclusive, and they contract all their bookings through a single company in Rome. I guess they're looking for a change."

"Which brings up the question of what they did to need replacing?" Drew pointed out. "Poseidon's idea of exclusive booking rights might include being required to fill the ship. They might want us to cover the difference for all we know."

"I'll read the contract," assured Mitch. "I am a lawyer after all. I'm sure I can read this and find anything that is blatantly contrary to our corporate benefit."

Over the next few minutes, the group decided to accept Mitch's recommendation on the subject. Pam did remind him he needed to call the 'true and total dick' and see if Senator Brickman would accept Paradise Island for his birthday party instead of Grand Bahama Island. Mitch jumped up as if to chase Pam out the door while she giggled but he stopped in front of Beth to kiss her and shoo her and Drew out the door as well. After closing his door (all the way this time) he went back to his desk, called Senator Brickman's aid, and then picked up the contract.

Two and a half hours later he had completely read through the one-hundred-seventeen-page contract (some sections several times). Much of it had to do with the varied laws of the seven ports of call as they were in six different countries but was intrigued about the extent of the morals clauses.

Any serious breach of morals between a member of There and Back Again Travel Agency and Poseidon Cruise Lines would mean a significant forfeiture of finances for one or both parties involved while holding both companies blameless as long as the offending party was held to his/her company's highest form of discipline.

He thought it strange that a company that catered to the truly decadent lifestyle described would hold moral values to such a high standard. He silently applauded their practice, reminding himself that his own company had a similar but less specific policy.

He called Beth and Pam asking them to meet him in Drew's office, then picked up the signature pages of the contract and started out the door. He had Tracy follow him, making sure she had her notary stamp.

Once everyone was assembled, he explained that he felt that they should go ahead and sign the contract and compete for the booking rights.

"Poseidon is being very generous, but expects an average of eighty percent capacity or better on every voyage. We would probably need to lease at least another floor to house the extra agents needed to pull this off, but if we can manage that many passengers, the minimum gross return would be over twelve million Euros per year. Obviously, I don't know what that would do to our bottom line yet. I haven't had nearly enough time to crunch the numbers with accounting, but six million USD seems conservative. I realize I'm counting chickens here but that easily puts over a half-million in each of our pockets."

"Where do we sign?" asked Beth and Drew almost simultaneously.

"What about the potential loss Drew mentioned?" asked Pam.

"As I said, they expect eighty percent or better on average. If we can't produce our commission is reduced to cover it, and if we fall below zero commission for two months in a row without correcting the average, we work for free until our replacement is found. That's where the potential for loss comes in. At that point, we'd be required to pay the difference below the zero commission. The upside is, even during that point in the contract if we bring the bookings back up to the eighty percent average, we would see earnings again. At least until we were replaced that is."

"That's a far cry from five hundred grand in my pocket," Drew pointed out.

"Don't you mean a million in our pocket?" Pam inquired.

"Of course, Baby," Drew replied smiling. No one seemed to notice the glance he gave Beth after the attention was turned back to Mitch.

"I recognize the risk, but I think I can sell it to the board at Bridge. Not only that but I pulled up Poseidon's earnings for the last several years. The reason our predecessor is being replaced is that during the worst part of the season, a Greek cruise ship captain tried to show off to his girlfriend and ran his ship aground killing several dozen passengers. Even then, although tragic it may not have been that big a deal to Poseidon, except the Eurybia was completely booked for a private corporation. Some dot com startup that went big with bitcoins. Anyway, the owner pulled the entire booking. All we have to do is include an eighty percent cancelation penalty into any booking with more than one cabin and we'd be covered."

Beth leaned over and signed the contract without waiting for further discussion. "I guess that makes me the owner and you my significant other," she teased while smiling at Mitch.

Pam laughed while signing. "I like the way you think, Beth."

Drew was about to sign when Mitch slapped him on the back. "Maybe you shouldn't sign buddy. I forgot to mention the morals clauses. They're a lot tougher than our own and are ironclad. You're not allowed to mess around with any associate of Poseidon Cruise Lines, without losing your shirt so to speak."

They both chuckled when Pam turned around and gave Drew a dirty look. "You already have a pre-existing contract saying the same thing Andrew Owensby. If you hesitate to sign now you're sleeping in your car and it won't be parked in our ... I mean my garage."
