This was a new experience for me. I felt a connection with Barbara the moment we met at an older adult speed dating event. There is no way to explain it but the link appeared strong and deep. I was scared to say anything because there was no certainty she felt the same way.
After the interviews finished, I saw her talking to a guy while she glanced in my direction discretely but repeatedly. I took that as a good sign. His body language indicated he was very interested in her. Her body language said she didn't share the same enthusiasm.
Hoping I read them correctly, I left the table, grabbed a couple of soft drinks, and took the cans back to my chair. When she looked my way, I held up a can and showed an expression which I hoped said, "Would you like another ginger ale?"
She smiled then looked back at him. He gave her a slip of paper which I guessed was his contact information. She thanked him while slowly moving in my direction. When he turned to talk with another woman, she walked toward me wasting no steps or speed. Less than 10 feet to go, another man stopped her. They chatted for a moment and he also gave her a slip of paper.
I almost laughed out loud seeing her eyes roll as she came to the table.
"Is this seat taken?" she asked.
I stood saying, "No ma'am. Please sit down."
As we sat down, I slid a ginger ale toward her and said, "Barbara, isn't it?"
"Yes it is, Peter. How did you know I liked ginger ale?"
"I saw you drinking one before the event began. So, I gambled you might like another. Thanks for remembering my name. "
Her smile was so real and gorgeous. I was mesmerized.
"Did you memorize what the other women were drinking or just me? By the way, thanks for waiting."
"At the risk of sounding clichΓ©, you are the only woman I noticed all evening long. And another clichΓ© comes to mind which is I feel an instant attraction to you."
She stared at the table for a long moment.
"Thank you. I must have felt the attraction because here I am."
The nervous laughter making her even more beautiful.
"Would you join me for dinner?" I asked impetuously.
Recognizing the deer-in-the-headlights look, I feared I moved too fast. She took a sip then seemed to be pondering the pros and cons.
That beautiful smile appeared as she said, "I would like that."
A few moments later she asked, "Did I say something wrong?"
"Uh....no....not at all," I managed to say. "I'm surprised a beautiful woman like you would go out with a guy like me."
"Don't sell yourself short, Peter. Of all the guys here, you spent more time looking into my eyes than staring at my chest. You listened. I like that."
A confidence flowed through me I hadn't experienced in a long time. We stood and I offered her my arm. She slid her hand in and we walked out. In the parking lot, I asked what type of food she preferred. Her answer was perfect: barbecue.
"Do you know Elmer's over on 18th and Pine?" I asked.
"One of my favorite places," she replied.
She followed my car to Elmer's. It was a slow night as we only had to wait 10 minutes for a table.
As we finished our brisket sandwiches, potato salad, and cole slaw, I asked, "Thanks for the compliment on eye contact. Did any of my answers stand out?"
The captivating smile appeared as she said, "Your favorite band was original. Never heard of anyone who likes the Beatles and the New York Philharmonic. Then when you said 'right now' to the question on what age did you have the most fun told me you didn't dwell on the past too much. I also liked your favorite food is 'too many to choose from.'"
"Which of my answers impressed you?"
I thought a moment then said, "The one about being a city girl or country girl and your response of being a city woman I liked very much. I totally agree the perfect Sunday is shopping at bookstores. Based on my responses, I loved that your favorite band is the London Symphony Orchestra, and the age you had the most fun is also right now. Finally, that relationship deal breaker of no communication / discussion because the guy believes he is always in charge."
"You don't find that last response threatening to your masculinity?"
"Nope. A relationship is a two way street, in my opinion."
She seemed genuinely pleased.
Her cell phone buzzed. She looked at the text message and smiled. There was a look of relief on her face.
"Good news?" I asked.
"Very," was all she said.
In the parking lot, I asked if we could see each other again. She suggested a Panera Bread nearby and we agreed to Tuesday evening at 7:00.
We were a combination of openness and caution over the next 10 dates. I learned she loves working from home as an online editor. She has one sibling but didn't say any more than that. Both parents are deceased. She was very open about her major (English) and how she got into editing. But she never said anything else about her college days. She almost qualified for an appearance on Jeopardy. She mentioned loving to read "Cozy Mysteries" then spent an hour explaining what they were and which ones she likes. No children or pets. Her favorite games are word games like Scrabble or Wordle."
