"You're going to his hotel room?!"
Makayla winced at the shrillness of her older cousin's voice. The young woman received a call from the woman no doubt due to her worrisome brother's meddling and she had been ranting for what felt like an hour.
She was flabbergasted that the girl had gotten herself into such an entanglement and with an older man at that. The brown-skinned girl couldn't blame her feelings that way.
It was crazy how fast things were going as she went from signing all of her contracts to spending the night. Part of her felt like she was insane to do this while the other wanted to run to him.
She really didn't know what to do with herself but she hated being scolded like a child. She crossed her legs feeling unsure of herself.
She pushed herself back into her bed's pillows and tried to calm her cousin down. "It's not that bad, Rashida. He's--"
"--Not that bad? Seriously, you even saying that proves to me it is BAD. This guy is old enough to be your father for God's sake." Makayla bit her lip as she was interrupted and yelled at some more.
Her cousin had lost her mind when she stupidly told her Mr. Nilou's age. The woman, who was married with a preteen, swore like a sailor before she called Makayla a naive idiot for entertaining him.
Rashida argued that no man about the age of thirty should be dating a younger woman. That she was being used for her body and for her talents.
It sickened her and left her teary-eyed to imagine that her family thought so little of her. They really thought she would sell her body for a publishing deal.
Her heart hurt and she wanted to hang up right then and there. But she couldn't. She was frozen as she listened to her cousin go on and on about how stupid she was behaving.
She nearly choked when her mother was mentioned. Apparently, her annoying ass brother went further than just telling Rashida. He went on to talk to their parents and stepmother about everything.
Her dad had been in disbelief from what was going on but didn't have the desire to argue with her. Makayla's mother was another subject.
The woman had teamed up with her stepmother to find a way to get the girl "out of a dangerous lifestyle". Makayla was so betrayed.
Her eyes watered and she wiped them with her sleeve as her chest became tightened. This had to be some sort of anxiety attack. Her body was a woozy cage as she swallowed the spit gathering in her tight throat.
This was the worst outcome and she hadn't even done anything with Mr. Nilou yet. She tried to think of anything to say, to explain herself but came up empty. Her mind was pulling a blank as she was hit with the reality of her situation.
Her entire family assumed she was a sex worker and her mother was becoming hysterical. Her dad was frozen with shame and her brother hadn't even bothered to warn her.
The poor girl had been left out to dry. Rashida yelled at her some more and Makayla felt empty. "You need to break it off! You need to get off the phone with me right now and tell him that you're done."
Her body was shifting, her conscious mind floating above as she moved the phone away from her ear and stared. She couldn't risk her career for her family's delusions.
It was true that the older man had feelings for her but he wasn't pimping her out for God's sake. The girl wondered if they thought that was the only way she'd be successful. Her heart broke into pieces at the thought and she rushed to hang up.
The call left her traumatized and she dropped her phone onto her bed. Her hands shielded her face from imaginary taunts directed her way. She was dizzy as she tried to figure out what to do.
The heartbroken woman wondered if she should talk to her brother about everything but gave up on the idea as it was useless. He would just disagree that what he did was bad and that she should hear their parents out.
Makayla couldn't fault him for what he did as he was her older brother. He loved her dearly, even if they had a rocky relationship at times because of how they were raised.
He wouldn't hide anything from their parents if he felt she was at risk of being harmed. The girl couldn't be angry about that, nobody with a heart could. She just felt pain from the betrayal his choice had left her to dwell in for now.
