They got to the gate a couple of hours before their flight. He got his wife and 12 year old son settled and went off to forage for coffee.

Standing in line for coffee he felt the buzz of the crowd. Everyone was excited to be heading south again. The summers are short enough in Canada and the winters seem that much longer as a result. He was looking forward to the break. Working from home for three years was better than commuting but the lack of travel to warm climates over three years was painful. With travel restrictions lifted, and the world getting back to "normal", he was on his way to the Caribbean so enjoy some warm sunshine, beach life and definitely some golf.

As he made his way back to the gate, he noticed another couple arriving. An attractive woman in her 50s, and what he assumed was her husband. She was dressed very stylish yet comfortable in a pair of yoga pants that was hugging her curves and a light zip up hoodie, also hugging. He caught her eye as they passed and she smiled at him.

"Hi," he said to her, in passing.

He handed his wife her tea, and his son his smoothie, and sat down to enjoy his coffee while waiting for boarding.

--------

"Did you remember to pack your phone charger?"

Annette frowned. "Of course I did, and yours which you left on the nightstand. I know it has been awhile since we have gone anywhere but I am still me, still organized..."

"Sorry, just a bit stressed. Work is-"

"I thought the whole point of this was not to think about work?" she sighed. "You didn't even book it off did you?"

"I couldn't. There is too much going on. The Thompson case and right after is the Petrovich case."

Annette shook her head. It was typical. They had agreed to go away, alone with no work talk and he didn't keep up his side. "It is fine. I get it." She kissed his cheek as they found some seats in the boarding area.

Annette at 52 was not where she thought she would be in life. She had had plans. She had wanted to be a pharmacist. Instead she and Robert had married young with two kids coming right away. She had stayed home with them and then just never went back to her dreams. Robert had worked hard, become a successful lawyer and there was no need for her to work, as he often reminded her. She was the humanitarian side of the couple. She volunteered at numerous places, did fundraisers for local charities, and more. While she enjoyed it, none of what she had done in the last 25 years had really been for her.

The benefit of not working was she had time and the money for a personal trainer. She was lean and looked good for her age. Oh, two kids had softened some areas but she didn't look like she had 50 in her rear-view mirror. Robert on the other hand had become the very definition of older lawyer. The dark hair had turned salt and pepper, though Annette really like that - she found it handsome. His body had softened from too much desk time and not enough time on his feet. She loved him regardless and had been looking forward to this vacation. Her suitcase was full of sexy lingerie and dresses to try and entice him. Their sex life had grown less and less frequent and when they did it was becoming routine.

As they started to settle in she smiled at a handsome man carrying drinks. "Hello." She greeted him as he got closer and she noticed he was going to his family. They were sweet looking. She wondered if they were as happy as she was to be getting away.

"I need to take this." Robert got up and wandered away, phone to his ear.

Annette sat and took a book out of her carry on. Her eyes drifted to the couple and their son, specifically to the man.

--------

God how Alex loved a good cup of coffee. It was a total bonus to have a kiosk that sold coffee brewed from freshly ground beans - in the airport no less. He sat there savouring it as his wife and son were pressed up against the window watching the planes pull up to, and back away from the nearby gates.

His eyes scanned the waiting area and came to rest upon "that woman". She seemed to be having a mild disagreement with the man. A typical marital spat over nothing, he thought, although they tend to linger once they start. The man pulled out his phone and walked away from her, seemingly to take a call.

"Dude," he thought, "You're on vacation."

And so was he. At 52 he was still in reasonable shape. Not a pro athlete by any means but he could hold his own on the ice with guys younger than him. He ran several times a week, outdoors in the summer and on his treadmill in the home gym, since all the public and private gyms had closed. He quite liked the salt and pepper hair that showed up in the mirror a few years ago, which also found its way to the short and well trimmed facial hair he was currently sporting. Some of his buddies went full-on caveman when Covid struck, but he took more pride is his appearance than most of his friends, sticking with the more tailored look.

Although, he planned on taking in some sun and golf, he had hope to go out and have a few drinks here and there as well. Meet the locals and the other vacationers at the resort but Mrs. Homebody will want to stick to the room most of the time.

"I've sat around the house for almost three years Liz," he argued with his wife just yesterday. "I can't do it all the time in the Caribbean. Buddy boy is old enough to stay in the suite alone for a couple hours while we go have a drink or two and mingle. He has his own room and of course, the internet. He'll probably be exhausted from all the activities to care about us going down to the bar anyway."

"So will I," she countered.

That was so deflating. Here he was hoping for a good time. Two weeks of NO WORK to have some fun, and maybe even some sex. He often wondered why he even got his hopes up for that anymore as it was so rare that it actually materialized.

He focussed on the woman again. He watched her as she took a book out of her carry on. She started to read but after a few moments he saw her lift her head and look in his direction. Their eyes met and they smiled at each other again. He gave her a discreet wave with a wiggle of his fingers. Glancing in the direction of his wife and son, she returned the wave equally discreet, smiling impishly.

"Oh my God that was cute!" he thought, smiling still.

He was struck again by her attractiveness and with that smile, she simply radiated. She was not a super model. She had a somewhat larger framed but man did she wear it well. As his single friend used to say, she was doing those yoga pants a favour by wearing them. He presumed she too must spend some time in the gym.

----

The man seemed to notice, waving his fingers at her as he smiled. She waved back. There was something incredibly fun about..flirting...was it flirting? It likely was...Annette had to admit it was really nice to flirt even so innocently with a good looking stranger.

She tried to read her book, playing with her brown hair. She kept glancing up to see if he was still watching her. Every time her eyes found his face, found him looking she smiled a bit more. She reached up and undid the top of her hoodie. The tank top underneath was a bit lower cut, exposing her cleavage. To ensure he noticed, Annette leaned down to get something from her carry-on, her body facing him.

"Oh my god...I can't believe I am doing this" she thought. She was surprised by how much she suddenly wanted his attention. She could feel that euphoric feeling that crept up one's spine when flirting. It had been a long time since she had done something like this. She was a good wife, a good volunteer. Rarely did she flaunt her form anymore. But oh, when she was younger...

She sighed. So long ago. When her breasts were higher, hips more slender and stomach flatter. She was grateful for her trainer but she realized that she had missed her chance to date and be free. Again, she reminded herself that she loved Robert, but this was exciting regardless.

His heart leapt a little. Unsure as to why. Were they flirting, or was it just his wishful thinking to have a woman interested in him? God it had been so long. He wondered where she was going. Where they were going. She was after all, accompanied. His mind raced into the fantasies of the two of them staying at the same resort. Accidentally bumping into one and other on several occasions... at the bar, the pool, the gym, the beach...

"Earth to Alex. Earth to Alex. Come in Alex." his wife voice droned through the haze.

"Oh! Sorry honey. Lost in thought there," he replied.

"Apparently!" she said. "How far is the resort from the airport?" she continued. "Tammy said she had a 90 minute bus ride where her and Jim went to St, Thomas three years ago. I am already tired and we haven't even got on the plane yet," she droned on.

He sighed.

"We are renting car, and it's 30 minutes max to the resort." he stated. "Quit worrying."

She folded her arms and sat in silence beside him.

He looked over at the woman again. Longingly this time.

------

Annette watched as the man's wife came over to him and they talked. She wished she could hear what they were saying. She wondered where they were staying.

Why? Not as if anything would happen. "Not that I want to," she thought. "Do I?" She had to admit there was a bit of appeal to the idea of a handsome stranger flirting with her on a the beach. She sighed and went back to her book.

Robert returned and she smiled up at him. He was clearly lost in thought. "All good at work?"

"No but I can't do much until we get to the resort."

"But, the beach and dinner..." Annette could see all the plans she had made for them disappearing.

"I have to take care of a few things before I can even think of relaxing."

She forced a smile. "Of course, sweetheart."

"We aren't twenty anymore Anne."

She visibly deflated. "But we aren't that old either, Rob."

The mild argument was interrupted with a call for them to begin boarding. They stood as the executive class was called. It had been a long time since Robert flew economy. Annette cast a look at the man and his wife, a smile on her lips and a slight nod in his direction. It had been nice while it lasted.

------

He watched her get up. "First class," he thought. She looked the part of first class but not at all in am I'm-better-than-you kinda way. She looked fabulous. She was about 5'8" he guessed, tall for a woman really. Her dark brown hair was just past her shoulders. It was teased with a curling iron this morning he assumed, based on the lazy curls at the bottom. Her make up was minimal. A touch of eye shadow, some mascara and maybe just some lip gloss to highlight her pink lips. Very natural.

He sighed.

She nodded towards him as she got up. He smiled. He cast a quick glance at his wife and discreetly waved with the wiggle of his fingers again. She smiled and winked playfully at him. He laughed quietly, and quickly made as if he was clearing his throat when he wife looked over at him.

He found himself fantasizing a little more, even thinking of kissing those soft pink lips. He really missed that heart fluttering feeling you get when you're about to kiss someone for the first time.

"I hope you're going to have a good time, wherever you're going," he thought. "I wish I could join you."

He was beyond ready for Saint Maarten.

------

The flight was nice. Annette read, napped and enjoyed some Prosecco. Robert had his laptop out and was typing away furiously. He had paid for net and even though it wasn't great it gave him a chance to get some work done.

The landing was smooth and they exited the plane.

"Need to grab the bags and a car should be waiting to take us to the resort." Robert said, already on his phone.

"Alright, dear." Annette smiled. She was looking forward to this even if it seemed like she would be enjoying a lot of it solo. They stood at the baggage claim, waiting for the carousel to start moving. Her eyes scanned the crowd wondering if she would see her handsome stranger and his family. She smiled a little bigger thinking of the way he smiled and waved at her.

------

Seated at the back of the plane, they were almost the last to get off. There were just a few stragglers at the carousel waiting for the baggage.

"Should have flown First Class." he said to his wife.

"I'm not wasting that kind of money!' she stated.

"I was joking. Other passengers are half way to their resort by now."

"Yeah we still have that drive. I hate travelling," she added.

"You and buddy get the bags, I will go get our car," Alex said and walked away.

While he walked over the car rental kiosk, he passed by the large glass doors that open up onto the "pick-up" spot just outside the terminal. He caught a glimpse of a dark haired woman getting the back of a black SUV. "Holy shit!" he said out loud. "Was that her!?"

He turned toward the doors but the SUV door had just closed and the tinted windows prevented him from looking inside. He contemplated running out to the car but thought better of that, given his wife was in eyesight and what if it wasn't her? He'd look like an idiot. He paused for a moment and started a wild series of thoughts.

How many resorts are there on the Dutch side? What are the odds it WAS her and she's at the same resort as me (us)?

He was staying at La Samanna. A little off the beaten path but that just meant less crowds and noise, specially when the cruise ships rolled in. Hard to imagine but those too were back in commission, post-Covid. This place was top notch. Private suites, some with your own private pool. He thought for sure Mrs. First Class was worthy of a place like this.

"Easy buddy," he thought. Enjoy the fantasy but you are jumping to way too many conclusions.

He found himself smiling again at her little wave, wink and that playful smile of hers.

"Next," the girl at the car rental counter called, waking him from his thoughts..

--------

They got into the black SUV. Annette had to admit she was a little sad she hadn't seen the handsome stranger again but it was a long shot if she was being honest with herself.

The car drove off and she stared out the window as Robert got on a call. She sighed. She hadn't realized that he had made sure he would have cell reception here. She didn't think to ask because he was supposed to be taking time off. It really had been a pipe dream. He was never not working. She knew that. She was annoyed at herself for thinking it might have been different this time.

At least the resort was nice. She had booked them a private suite at La Samanna. She was dreaming of their food, the spa services...she envisioned a massage done by strong hands. She could feel her nipples getting hard.

She had planned so many things for the two of them but she knew in her heart she would be doing them alone. Annette vowed to enjoy everything to the best of her abilities. She was going to bask in this vacation and all it had to offer.

--------

Finally in the rented car, he collected his wife and son and the baggage and they were off to the resort. It was actually less than 30 minutes. He was happy to check in, unpack and put on some loose summer clothes. His wife and son opted to stay in the room while he went foraging for some food. A quick take out for an early dinner would be fine for tonight.

Sporting a pair of shorts and a polo, he made his way from the suite to the lobby. The Baie Lounge had some good finger food along with an extensive drink menu. He bellied up to the bar and order a cold Corona with a wedge of lime and reviewed the food menu.

He chatted with the bartender and watched the wait staff come and go, picking up drinks for patrons in the bar and out on the "Laplaj" which is a play on the French term for the beach "la plage". He ordered a caesar salad for his wife, an angus burger for his son and a club sandwich for himself.

"The beautiful woman on the patio would like a Pinot Grigio," the server said, walking up to the bar.

"Isn't there more than on beautiful woman out there?" I asked.

He laughed. "Not presently," he replied.

Alex looked through the window to the left of the bar but couldn't see anyone. His curiosity couldn't be contained so he got up and walked to the open doors to look out at the beach. That's when he saw her.

"Holy fuck," he thought to himself.

It was HER. Mrs. First Class. Same airport. Same plane apparently, and now, the same resort.

How did he not see her sitting in first class as they walked through to their seats? Then he remembered the petty discussion his wife had started as they were boarding the plane. He was so wrapped up in that, he wasn't aware of his surroundings, and when they deplaned, First Class was way ahead of them.

"So it WAS her in the SUV," he realized, thinking back.

His heart was racing, as was his mind.

The server had her wine in his hand and was heading to the patio.

"Give me that," Alex said to him, slipping him $5.

"Certainly sir," he replied, handing Alex the lady's drink.

He walked through the doors and slowly towards the woman. He reached around her and placed the glass on the table.

"There you go Madamme," he said, in his best feigned Caribbean accent.

"Thank you so much," she said, not lifting her head.

"It beats airport wine selection," he said.

"Well of course," she said, looking up. "You are a five minute drive to Fra....." then she lost her voice.

------

They had arrived, checked in and no sooner had Annette started to unpack than Robert was on his laptop. She opened the curtains to their private patio and decided not to let it bother her. She was disappointed but it was better to keep that to herself. Instead she put in her ear buds, put on some music and set to work unpacking their suitcases. She then washed up and put on a long blue sundress. Her hair brushed out, she kissed his cheek and left the room. Stopping at the front desk she ordered food to be brought to him. Then she headed to the bar. Annette asked to be seated outside and then relaxed as she waited for her wine.

Her mind was elsewhere as it arrived and she didn't look up. When she did she was shocked to find the handsome stranger from the airport standing there.

She blushed. Her lips were parted as if she was about to say something but nothing came out at all. Annette shook her head a little. What was he doing here? Was he staying here too? She glanced around but didn't see his family. There was confusion in her eyes when she looked back at him.

"I - Hello." She smiled at him. "Well I have to say what a fun coincidence this is." What did one say to the stranger they were flirting with across a gate at an airport? Her blush deepened. "Um- would you care to sit? Is that weird?"

--------

"It's not weird at all," he said, smiling.

She felt it. His acceptance... no.. his eagerness, to sit with her.

He sat down at the table beside her, placing his bottle of Corona on the table near her glass of wine.

"I am picking up food for the family and me," he said. "So I definitely have a few minutes."

"Annette," she said, extending her hand.

"Alex," he replied, taking her hand between both of his. "My pleasure."

"THIS is what's weird" she thought. "I'm tingling. And my nipples are hardening again."

She hoped he didn't notice but she was wearing a very light sundress. It took all she had not to look down to check herself.

"Fancy meeting you here," she said, hoping not to appear too flustered.

"Of all the gin joints," he started.

"... in all the towns in all the world," she finished.

He laughed out loud.

"She walks into mine...." they said together.

She laughed.

She had a great laugh. It was effortless. And it made her smile that much more appealing.

She felt like a little school girl for some reason. Something she hadn't felt in years.
