The rain had begun again. It was coming down in sheets and felt like wet snow when it hit her body. Today wasn't the logical day to go wondering off into the woods alone. It was near dark and who knew who was in these woods at night. How many snakes might she trip over while exploring. What had she been thinking?

She reassured herself that she'd been thinking of that dream she'd had so many times about these woods where no one went. There was a man. He was a tall man, perhaps about 6 feet 1. He was older, and had a full beard. His blue eyes twinkled when he looked at her in the moonlight in the dream. He appeared to her as if he was a ghost.

She stopped walking when she heard a twig snap just to her right. Over head the sky flashed with lightening and thunder started to roar. She shivered. What had she been thinking. She could have waited and came a different day. One that wasn't overcast with soon to be showers. There was nothing for it but for her to head for those old houses which were falling down in so many tiny pieces. It was all over the forest around the old houses. She was thinking she could find shelter there. But when she arrived it looked so ran down and unsafe she feared to enter any of them or stand under what remained of the porch roof.

She looked around hoping to find someplace nearby. A large pine tree flashed before her eyes when the sky lit up with lightening again. The boom that followed made her heart skip a beat. She just managed to stay on her feet. She felt so alone and scared.

She started toward the pine tree.ย  What other choice did she have? It was so large and the branches were so low to the ground that she could slipย beneathย them to get inside and away from the rain. As she crawled under the nearest branch she saw a foot. She stopped crawling.

But a hand reached out and pulled her inside and released her as soon as she was out of the rain. She looked up and into the eyes of the man from her dreams. He did nothing else but smile. Then all went dark. She scooted away from the man. Who was he? Why was he here?ย  She had to get out!

The sky lite up with lightning again and the darkness inside the tree disappeared and so did the man. She was alone. How...

A crashing sound from outside the tree greeted her ears. She curled her own body up tightly and hugged the base of the tree. She shivered. Thunder roared several times before it became quiet again and all she could hear was the sound of rain hitting the leaves and the grounds around her.

Several minutes passed. The storm seemed to be letting up. She crawled towards the edge of the tree and looked outside. Just inches away and where she'd been standing was a huge tree that lightening had hit and it fell. If she'd stayed there just one more minute she'd have been crushed.

She crawled out from under the tree and turned to look at it. She felt as if she was thanking it for saving her life. The tree changed just for a moment into the man she'd seen inside. Then, falling from atop the tree an object fell and landed at her feet.

She picked it up and held it warmly in her hands. She knew what it was. She looked back up at the tree and nodded her head yes.

Once again the storm burst out above the tree and struck the ground upon where she stood. In her place a brand new tree appeared tilted so that it's branches intermingledย with those of the other tree. They appeared as one.

Days passed and a search party began looking for her. The missing girl. People fanned out in the woods surrounding the trees. Searching for clues of her where she might be. They found nothing. One lady who stepped closer to the trees made this comment.

"Look at those trees." She pointed at the pair of pine trees planted so closely together. "You'd think they were lovers the way the branches twist and turn within each other."

The girl was never found. But the trees went on to live a happy life all alone in the woods wrapped up in each others arms.
