Author's Note: This is a short little story just barely over 750 words. I hope you will enjoy it. This came to me as I enjoyed my morning breakfast the other day.

=======

It was another lazy Saturday. I slept in as usual and went to my favorite cafΓ© for my usual Saturday lunch. The cafΓ© was a favorite of the neighborhood. It was the kind of place where you ordered and paid at the counter and then waited for your food to either take it with you or find a table to sit and enjoy it.

I was standing at the counter to give my order. I usually ordered a BLT on rye bread with a coffee. I was standing there, waiting, when I spotted a lone brownie in the display. Now, I know that eventually, more would appear, but I couldn't take a chance that they would come out by the time I finished my lunch. I always bought a brownie to enjoy later while watching a movie in my apartment.

The brownies here were wonderfully decadent, with just the right amount of crushed almonds and coated with icing that was just sweet enough to make you pause to enjoy every bite.

It was my turn to order. I smiled at the cashier, ordered my sandwich and coffee, and added the brownie.

A melodic voice behind me said, "Hey, I was looking forward to that brownie."

I turned to look at the speaker and saw a cute brunette with puppy dog eyes that would make your knees melt. She looked about my age, early to mid-twenties.

I decided to take a chance and asked, "Why don't you sit with me for lunch, and we can negotiate the ownership of the brownie?"

She looked me up and down and smiled. She stated, "You haven't got a chance."

Once our food was ready, we found a table in the corner and introduced ourselves. I learned that she was one year older than me. We graduated from different schools one year apart. I was just a few months into my first job; she had just received a promotion after one year in her job.

We were both the youngest children, and we both missed our parents' dogs. We both liked the same music and TV shows, and we both wanted to travel when we could afford it.

We were just finishing our lunch when the subject of the brownie came up.

She quickly grabbed it, put it in her purse, and asked, "Why don't we go to the art gallery and discuss the brownie later?"

I smiled and thought that was a wonderful idea.

We spent the afternoon enjoying the gallery, casually wandering from exhibit to exhibit. Occasionally, she would see something that excited her, and she would grab my hand to lead me to it but then let go. After a while, I found myself hoping that she would find something else that would cause her to grab my hand again. Eventually, though, she stopped letting my hand go.

We decided to grab some street food for dinner and enjoy it while watching little kids jump around in a wading pool. The food wasn't anything special, but the company and the laughter from the children made the meal magical. After dinner, I looked into those eyes and asked if she wanted to watch a movie at my place.

She pulled me into a hug and told me that she would love to.

I don't remember anything about the movie. I was just too captivated by her as she snuggled closer while we sat watching the movie on the sofa. I had never felt more comfortable than I did with her.

I would like to say that we made passionate love that night, but our evening had an even better ending. After the movie, we kept talking and eventually fell asleep in each other's arms while cuddling on the sofa.

=======

Eight years later, we had just bought and moved into our first house and had just finished putting the kids to bed. We were snuggling in our usual position on the sofa when a thought came to me. I asked, "Dear?"

She turned and looked at me with those same brown eyes and asked, "What?"

I looked into those eyes and thinking of that first day together I asked, "What ever happened to the brownie?"

She looked at me with a puzzled expression on her face and asked, "What brownie?"

I looked at her and thought of all the wonderful things we had been through in the last ten years and smiled at her and said, "You're right, what brownie."

I then pulled her closer and kissed her on the forehead. I ended up with something much better than a brownie.
