The last day before college Christmas break felt like the hour after a good lay. Everybody was lazy as hell, sated by the knowledge that they'd have two weeks off.

Rune's crew was taking the chance to spend some time together before they'd scatter to the winds. They'd all arranged their free periods today, so the whole gang was gathered together. Most days they would have been sniping at each other in short bursts, or chatting over their lunch.

Today, they had the time and the luxury to just relax with each other. Alex and Ken had pulled over a second couch to their usual nook. A third chair had given them the space they all needed.

Madison lay lengthwise on the couch with her head in Sydney's lap and her feet in Cora's. The three girls were looking through a costume catalog and talking quietly with each other. All three had their shoes off.

Alex and Ken took two of the chairs, claiming spoils for their hard work. Ken had his legs up on one of the chair rests, tossing a ball up and down into the air. Alex had his leg curled under him, turned in the chair to talk to Heather.

She'd been given the third seat. The ethereally beautiful girl had been laughing so hard for the last minute her face had turned red. Alex was beaming.

Over on the other couch, Rune sat on one end with his feet on the nook's coffee table. He had his large sketchpad in his lap, drawing. In fact, he was drawing the scene across from him. Scribbling as fast as he could, he wanted to capture this moment for Alex.

Next to him sat Vincent. Vince was slumped way down on the couch, his arms crossed in front of his chest. His feet were up on the coffee table as well, and he was quietly snoring.

On the far end of the couch sat Amanda. She was splitting her time listening and occasionally chiming in to Syd and Madison's conversation. In her lap sat a book, "Girl with the Dragon Tattoo." She'd only made a chapter at most since she sat down.

Ken said, to no one in particular, "We are boring." Rune looked up, the only one with bandwidth to listen to him. His hand continued to move across the paper.

"I thought you liked playing with balls." Rune said. Amanda, who was skimming her book at that moment, snickered.

Ken continued his game of self-toss. "You know me, buddy. I'm like a puppy. Doesn't change the fact that we're boring."

Rune turned back to his sketchbook, adding detail to Heather's hair. "You're bored?"

Ken tossed the ball. Caught it. Looked thoughtful. "No, actually." He sat up in his seat, looking around the group. Syd put the catalog down, and Madison looked up at him. "I'm actually very comfortable." He looked perplexed.

Syd smiled. "It's okay sweetie. What you're feeling is the human emotion called friendship."

Ken rolled his eyes. "Listen. Just because you two are over there being incredibly hot doesn't mean ..." His voice trailed off. "Sorry, what was I thinking about?" He grinned at the couple on the couch. In unison, Madison and Sydney stuck their tongues out at him.

"Ken, did you ever call back that gal in the red dress? The chick at the diner last week?" Cora looked up from where she was looking at a sweeping velvet victorian outfit.

"Cassidy? Yes I did, Cora. Thank you for asking. You asked much nicer than Sydney, who I believe referred to her as 'hot ass.'" Sydney shrugged, and Ken continued. "I'll thank you not to refer to my girlfriend as a 'hot ass.' She's far more than just a strikingly pert, firm, squeezable ass." Ken leaned back in this seat, arms crossed in contentment.

Syd laughed. "I don't think two dates count as girlfriend mode, Ken." He rolled his eyes at her, but he was smiling. The two of them had honestly walked away from their relationship together on great terms and now Syd was constantly trying to get him laid.

Heather sat forward in her chair, looking around Alex at Ken. "I've seen Cass at swimming meets, Ken. You're right, she's a nice girl." She turned to look at Sydney. "And a hot ass too, my god." Alex, who had been drinking a soda, choked and started coughing. Heather had the grace to look embarrassed.

At the sound Vince started upright, awake. "Leia bikini optional, Cora!" Cora turned to him, mouth agape. There was a long moment of stunned silence as Vince fluttered open his eyes and looked around the group. Seeing eight pairs of eyes on him, all he could say was "What?"

When they stopped laughing, Amanda cleared her throat. "To change the subject! Rune, when do you want us over for New Years?"

Rune wiped his tears, patting Vince on the back. His friend still held his head in his hands. "Say 9 o'clock, or whenever after that?"

Cora smiled at him. "You sure you're okay to have us over? I don't want you to put yourself out."

Amanda leaned over and good-naturedly smacked his leg. "Don't talk him out of it now. I'm jealous you have your own place off-campus."

Rune smiled at Core. "I'm good on all fronts. Don't worry about it." Cora's grin got bigger.

Rune looking at the group. "We're all agreed on the dress code, right?" He got a thumbs up all around.

"Great!" He smiled. "You guys bring the outfits, I'll bring the party."

"You may have gone overboard on the party." Eve stood beside him, looking around the main room of Rune's apartment. The common space connected the living room, dining room, and his pleasantly large and open kitchen. The entire place was an orgy of festiveness.

A banner reading "New Years 2006" hung from the ceiling. Air poppers and hats were carefully arranged on every table and bookshelf. In one corner there was a netting holding back fifty balloons, ready to be dropped at the appropriate time.

"You think?" Rune said.

Eve's AI projection was dressed relatively conservatively, for her. She had on high cut-off shorts, a tight fitting t-shirt, and her hair up in a long single braid. The braid swung as she turned her head to consider what he'd set up for the party. Music filled the air, good jazz set to low volume.

"You've done a pretty good job assimilating, cutie. Most days you'd never guess you have like seventy plus years on your friends. But every once in a while you do something like this. Strong dad energy."

Rune rolled his eyes. "Lies."

Eve walked over to his table. She gestured expansively at the finely arranged selection of champagne and glasses next to several plates of hors d'oeuvres.

Rune threw up his hands. "Oh shut up."

"I'm just saying, when they get here I'd say something about your dad sending this over for you." She smirked up at him, cocking her hip to the side. "Old man."

Rune smiled and walked over to her. "The thing you're doing with your hips is great. And the shorts! Mmf."

Her smile grew. "Wanna do something about it?"

He leaned down and nuzzled at her neck, nipped at her ear, and kissed her on the top of her head.

"I really want to. But they'll be here soon." On cue, there was a knock at his front door.

She stuck out her tongue. "You are such a tease."

He waved a hand as he turned towards the door. "Begone, minx."

He opened the door to find Ken, Cassidy, Vince, and Amanda standing expectantly. And looking good! Ken and Vince were wearing fitted tuxedos, neither of them rentals. Ken's vest was scarlet, to match Cassidy's dress. Cass was a stacked blonde, with a thin face and hair swept up into a bun. The dress hugged her curves, flaring to a wide hem at her ankles. Vince's tux had a high collar that went right up to his neck, and his contacts made his normally closed off face open and appealing.

He'd ridden his line of sight along the four of them, from left to right, and so Amanda was last in line. He did his best to keep his reaction off his face, but it was hard. She was stunning, literally taking the breath from his throat. Her hair was free, cascading down her back in wavy rivers of crimson. Her dress was a slate grey in color, matching her uniquely colored lipstick. Strapped, it hung from her breasts and clung to her body. There was a long slit up the side that went all the way up her thigh.

"Hey guys!" Rune said, stepping back. He tried to be casual and breezy. "Mi casa es su casa." He himself was wearing a tux, a classic look with a white shirt and a black tie. As they walked past him, Amanda stepped past him by just a few inches. She turned her head and looked into his eyes as she did, and time seemed to slow. Her scent filled his nose, vanilla and peaches ... and just like that, he was holding open the door for no one.

He shook his head to clear it as Vince asked "Is someone already here?"

Rune smiled, "Nah, I was just talking to my dad on the phone. He's on his way to London, just wanted to check in. Cassidy, hey. It's good to see you again."

The four of them made small-talk for a few minutes, and then the door sounded again. This time it was Syd and Madison, Alex and Heather. Madison was dressed in a gorgeous blue dress that hugged her breasts and slid tightly down the curves of her legs. The generous slit up the side showed her tan, and her recent time at the gym. Heather seemed to be floating in a shroud of silk and satin, a dark purple in color that matched a new streak in her hair.

Alex's vest matched his date's dress, of course. And Sydney stole the show. Her signature glasses gleamed above her stylish tuxedo. The tux was built around a black corset that thrust her breasts up and forward enthusiastically. Her jacket and slacks matched it perfectly.

Rune stood there, gaping at his friends for a moment. "Is it cool if I totally want to bone you guys? I'll be gentle." Smiles and eye rolls filled the hallway.

As Madison walked past him, she poked him in the chest "Big old tease." She winked at him.

Heather turned from examining his apartment. "This place is amazing, Rune. And look at that view!" Out the patio doors, you could see most of San Jose stretch out before them. Moonlight reflected off the river below.

Rune joined her, looking out the door. "Dad's owned this place forever, I guess. He likes a good view. Very cool of him to let me use it"

Sydney was examining the table. "Dude, what's with all this stuff? Has Madison been selling you short? Are you a gourmet cook?"

"Before he left, he ordered up a bunch of stuff for us to eat. The champagne was my addition. He uh ... doesn't know about that." Rune cocked his head. "And how exactly is Madison selling me?"

Madi hurried over and hugged him. "Ignore her. She's just being a brat." Rune smiled and kissed the top of her head.

As Madi went back to check out the champagne with Sydney, Heather slipped up beside him. "Can I talk to you for a minute?" She said quietly.

"Sure. Outside?" Heather nodded, and led the way onto the balcony. Rune closed the door behind them.

The December air was pretty cool by California standards. Rune tried his best to be gentlemanly about the lovely way Heather's nipples responded, staring out into the night instead of at her chest.

"Rune ... Cora's not coming." Heather spoke almost reluctantly.

"What?" Rune said, surprised. "Why?"

Heather sighed, rolling her eyes. "I feel so high school talking about crap like this. She has feelings for you and she's nervous." She rubbed her exposed arms, trying to keep warm.

Rune took the hint and slipped off his jacket, putting it around her. She nodded her thanks.

Then he shook his head. "Cora does not have feelings for me. She and Vince were hot and heavy for a month after the party. And then I heard she was going out with the guy from the football team."

Heather sighed, again. "Yeah, Jeremy. He was ... not kind to her." Rune's eyebrows went up and he clenched his fists. "Whoa there, cowboy." She said.

"Did he hurt her? What happened?" Rune popped a knuckle, calculating. He'd be willing to bet Jeremy wouldn't last 30 seconds against him.

"He's been passing around pictures she sent him." Her mouth made a thin line.

"This all happened in the last two weeks? Jeez." Rune made a face. "This is what I get for letting my dad talk me into traveling for the holidays." He paused. "But wait, what does Jeremy have to do with me?"

Heather regarded him, a level expression on her face. "You ... are kinda dumb. She's had a thing for you since before Halloween."

Rune's eyes went way up. "What?"

Heather nodded. "She was going to ask you to her party, and then you hooked up with Madison. That's why she and Vince got together." She paused. "Um, not to say that's the only reason. Vince is a good guy. But I think she was predisposed that evening."

"By the time Madi and Syd got together, she was dating Jeremy" She went on. "She told me all of this last week, while you were with your dad."

In truth Rune had been enjoying some delightful down time right here in the apartment. Lots of sketching, development of his art. Playing through his games backlog. And spending nights in bed with Eve.

Rune shook his head. "So why isn't she coming tonight?"

Heather held up her hand. "I think she just ... she wasn't ready to deal with people. And you especially, after all that."

Rune hmm'd. "Let's get you back inside. You're starting to make me cold." Heather led the way, shrugging out of his jacket as she went. Sydney was just working at the foil on one of the bottles when they got in.

"Don't you dare, minx!" Rune pointed an accusing finger.

Syd froze. "Whatwhonow?"

"We don't open the champagne until new years. We still have like three hours." He looked at his watch. "Speaking of time, I have to go out for a minute. I shouldn't be very long."

Everyone looked at him. Heather stared.

"You're leaving us in this place unattended?" Alex was laughing as he said it.

"Look, Hulk, you'll just have to restrain yourself." He turned to Heather. "Watch these apes for me, will you?" He hooked a thumb at his friends.

Rune turned, grabbing his keys from the dish. He pulled the door open, and paused. "No booze till I get back. Don't break anything." He paused again. "And if anyone gets naked, pics or it didn't happen."

As he was closing the door, he heard Amanda say to Heather "What did you say to him?"

Rune pulled to a stop at the foot of the drive leading to Cora's family's place. Eve was running interference for him, and he knew none of their security measures would see him this evening. The mansion was considerably quieter than it had been on Halloween, looming large and sprawling on the dark night.

Stepping up over the berm by the road, Rune judged the height of the fence. Flexed his knees, knelt, and leaped. He cleared it with ease, landing in a roll on the far side. The dirt that clung to his tux flaked and fell away as he moved up the grass, heading for the house. Rune grinned. Not often he got to stretch his legs like this.

As Rune reached the edge of the house garden, he scanned the facade. He smirked. "You like the Assassin's Creed games, Eve?" He leaped into the air, catching himself on one of the pillars edging the building. Then he began to climb.

She felt her flickering through his mind, reading over his shoulder at his memories of the troubled historical stealth franchise. "Your memories seem interesting. No female protagonists for a while though, huh?" She sighed.

"Yeah, well." Rune grunted as he continued up the building to the multi-leveled roof. "It gets better. Just takes a while." Cat quiet, he moved across the roof towards Cora's window.

"Can you project into the room, help me choose my moment," he said in his mind. "I don't want to scare her."

"Got it." There was a long pause, and then she said "Now. Just gentle taps." Rune complied, reaching up to rap carefully against the glass of the window.

Rune heard movement inside, and a figure appeared inside. "Rune?" He could hear her voice through the glass, startled. She opened the pane, staring at him. He held his finger up to his lips.

"Can I come in?" He asked quietly, with a big smile on his face.

She backed away from the window, gesturing. "How did you get up here?" The look on her face was hard to read, but she didn't look mad.

Rune slipped over the sill, closing the window behind him. He turned to her, arms wide. "There was a ladder alongside the house. I think one of the gardeners must have left it."

She poked his shoulder. "They're going to see you on the camera tapes, you dork."

Rune shrugged, looking unconcerned. No they weren't.

"Why are you here?" She crossed her arms, and for the first time Rune realized what she was wearing. Cora was wrapped up in a big fluffy bathrobe. Her hair was up in a ponytail, and he could see Bridget Jones' Diary paused on her television.

In his head, he heard Eve say "They just finished the scene with the fight in the restaurant. I didn't want her to miss out."

Repressing his eye roll, Rune answered her question. "Heather talked to me." He let the statement hang in the air.

"Oh." Cora crossed to her bed and sat down.

"Why didn't you tell me?" He paced forward a step and sank to the floor, sinking into a lotus.

She looked down at him. "It never seemed to be the right time?" She looked over at the television, then back. "I didn't think you felt the same way?"

He smiled. "Cora, you care about me yeah? We're friends?"

She nodded.

"You want to spend more time with me. See if we have any chemistry, right?" He tilted his head to look at her.

She turned away again, but nodded. More confidently, this time.

"Why wouldn't I feel the same way? You're smart, funny. You have great taste in movies." He nodded towards the screen. "You're very beautiful."

Cora laughed and smiled, the first time she'd relaxed since he'd gotten there. "You like Bridget Jones?"

Rune spread his arms wide. "Who doesn't? Colin Firth is adorable. And Renee? C'mon." He looked towards the screen, and back. "There's only like twenty minutes left in the movie, right?"

She nodded. "I think so?"

"Can I ask you on a date to watch the last twenty minutes of Bridget Jones' Diary with me?"

She stared at him a long moment. Then, a shy grin on her face, she reached out a hand. He grabbed it, and she pulled him to his feet. She shimmied over on the bed, making room for him. He took off his jacket and slung it over a chair, lying down on the bed beside her and putting out an arm. She lay her head on his shoulder.

"You're going to get your tux all wrinkled." She said, quietly.

"I'm not worried. Hit play?"

She did, and then snuggled into him, sighing. They watched through the rest of the movie, Rune particularly chuckling at the blue soup. As "Have You Met Miss Jones?" played over the footage of Bridget and Darcy as kids, Cora sat up in bed. With a flick of the wrist, she turned off the tv and tossed the remote on the floor.

Rune looked up at her, mouth curled up into a big smile. "I don't know about you, but that was a lovely first date."

Cora looked down at him, her hair on one side a little mussed. "You're very comfortable. I'm very comfortable around you." She put a hand on his chest, resting it above his heart. Felt his heartbeat. "How do you manage that?"

Rune put his hands behind his head, content. "Oh, you know. Training. With monks."

Cora raised an eyebrow. "Monks. Uh huh."

Rune shrugged. "It's a very intense process."

Cora rolled her eyes, and then stood. Moved to the foot of the bed. "You were right, I had a very nice ... twenty minute movie watching with you." She ran the words together, a smile growing on her face. "But you're wrong, the date isn't done yet."
