Chapter 10
Joe's third leg
The sound of thousands of hoofs on the ground levitated into Polly's ears. She peeked from around the big tree she'd chosen to hide behind. She took a deep breath and patted her heart. The big rush was just that. There were what seemed like maybe a hundred horses running by where they'd camped. All were free! They were beautiful!
Some were just plain colored like black or white while others had mixed colors on them and still others had one or two colors on them. All rushed by like they were in a hurry. Just after the last of them rushed by Joe ran from the tree he'd been hiding behind and started towards her. She started to move away from the trees but he motioned her back behind them. Just as he slipped in beside her two more horses this time with riders approached. Joe put his finger to his mouth to signal her to be quiet.
The two cowboys they didn't know continued on by them. Lucky for them their camp was not in site of the two riders. As they passed by Joe moved them around the tree so they couldn't be seen.
"Who are they?" Polly whispered.
"Cowboys," Joe told her. "They are chasing those horses. They either belong to them or they intend to own them." As the riders faded into the distance Joe moved away from the tree. "It's best we move on. I have no idea how many others are looking to own those horses as well."
Quickly they loaded up the horses and started to move away. This time they ventured into the woods. The trail they followed was weavy and hard to follow. Joe explained that the trail was an animal trail not a human trail. But, to move through the woods quickly it was the best bet they had.
"We'll stop later when we come upon a creek," Joe assured her. "Animals will always go by water if there is any around."
"Can I take a bath?" Polly inquired. "I feel nasty!"
Joe laughed. "Yes," that's normal when traveling as we are traveling," he pointed to himself and then to her.
The trail became smaller so one horse had to follow the other horse and talking wasn't possible.
