The chief's voice came through the speaker, "Rob can you join us up here in conference room 3?"

The chief walked forward with his hand outstretched. "Happy birthday Rob." he said as I shook his hand. I glanced around to see a good portion of the SBI intel staff, and the large conference table filled with refreshments and a large cake. "Your chief was kind enough to invite me to this little celebration." the Admiral told me. "And I was looking for an excuse to take the afternoon off."

The chief appeared at his side and said, "I invited the Admiral on the condition that he not try to recruit you while he was here."

"I'm afraid you're too late sir." I said as we all chuckled. "The Admiral has already tried several times to get me to head up his intel division. "I know you're not big on celebrating your birthday, but I thought we could all use a break from the normal routine."

"That is true." I admitted. "But I did enjoy this. I'm not sure how I'll feel about it later especially when someone is pestering me to come to bed while I'm trying to catch up, but I'll worry about that then." I added giving a not-so-subtle glance in Belle's direction.

Belle smiled before saying, "Now I know why you never really dated when we were in school. You know a couple of my friends were definitely interested in you."

"Yes, I know." I said. "Jamie in particular made her intentions very clear."

Belle laughed saying, "Oh yeah, she always said she wanted to, how did she put it, jump your bones, I think. Then again she was always a bit loose with men."

"Oh, I know." I said. "How else could one interpret her wearing the shortest black skirt she could squeeze into and literally throw herself at me at some of those parties?"

"She finally said you must either be blind, gay, or just plain stupid." Belle said. "She later said you must have been after someone else."

"She's one for four." I said making Belle and I chuckle.

"Yet you did eventually date other girls." Belle said pensively. "Ralph mentioned someone named Kelsey when we went to his restaurant."

"Well, it had been years since we had seen each other or even talked that much." I said. "After leaving the Navy and all its deployments I wanted to see about dating again now that I had a more stable home life. I also wanted to see if I could feel the same about another woman besides you."

Belle stared at me with a curious expression on her face as she said, "And what did you find out?"

Wanting to see where this was going, I didn't answer the question but instead said, "Don't tell me you're jealous of a woman I dated when we weren't even in contact with each other."

"No." she said rather matter of fact like but with a look on her face that said otherwise. "I'm more upset with myself for being so oblivious about you and the fact that it could have led to me losing you." Again, I could see that she was being genuine.

I took her hand in mine before saying, "To answer your question dating other women told me that while I could love them that I would never love them as much as I love you. Kelsey is a great woman, and I did love her, and she'll make some lucky man a great husband, but she had one uncontrollable flaw. She wasn't you. As hard as I tried, I couldn't help but compare her to you. I ended it at that point knowing it wasn't fair to her to keep her in a relationship that would end up going nowhere."

Silence followed that where Belle watched me thoughtfully. I finally asked, "So what about you? What made you realize you loved me?"

"Well." Belle started slowly. "There wasn't an exact moment per se it was more like a slow realization. I think it started way back when you left for the Navy. Where the conversation would have gone from there is unknown because at that moment a black sedan pulled up in front of the house. We watched as gentlemen in a suit got out and made his way up the sidewalk to where we were on the porch. I stood up and made my way to meet him.

"Robert Anderson?" he asked in a matter-of-fact voice.

"That's right." I said. "What can I do for you?"

"This is for you." he said as he handed me an envelope. "You're being subpoenaed for deposition by the counsel of Chad Erickson."

As he turned to head back to his car I said, "Tell your boss if he wants to communicate with me in the future he can do so through my attorney, William Wells."

He turned quickly and said, "As you wish." before getting in his car and driving off.
