Chapter 42 - Safe Haven

Wearing her first official maternity dress, Mimi felt like a radiant goddess standing before the full-length mirror in her mother's room. She turned this way and that, admiring her body and how it was taking a shape she'd never thought it would. She ran her hands over the tight roundness of her belly. They'd had to buy her new bras last week. The girls had been overfilling the lacy cups of her fancy underwear.

Some days she felt like a ripe fruit, and others she felt like a dairy goat carrying triplets. Today she felt pretty. The peach confection of a sundress made her feel beautiful. The drape of the fabric did an outstanding job of highlighting the cuteness of her bump and the growing fullness of her breasts. Adam could not keep his hands off of her, and every night he explored each day's tiny changes.

As she rested her hand on the top curve of her belly, she felt the bubbling tickle of the baby moving. "Hello, little friend." She'd been offering Adam ridiculous name choices. So far, she'd used the names of several barn cats, one ornery goat, and her first pony. The sweet man had tried his best to act like he wasn't horrified, but he insisted that no child of his was going to be called Oats. Mimi'd tried to hold herself together, but her eventual laughter at his suppressed horror had given her away.

They had invited both sides of the family to the baby shower and she was having second thoughts about that decision. What if they hated each other? Adam had been insistent that delaying the inevitable wouldn't help the situation. Turning to check the back of her dress, Mimi decided she looked presentable.

Adam's dad had refused to come, but Ann, Dillon, and Adam's cousin Juliet had responded to their invitations. Adam's cousin was only a year older than Sarah and Dillon was convinced the two would hit it off. Of late, Mimi's morning sickness had all but dissipated. Well, unless she smelled turnips. The baby did not like turnips. Neither did Adam, it turned out. They'd found that out one Sunday at her folk's house after church.

Noah burst into her parents' room. "Come on. Adam's family is here." He giggled. "A fancy-looking man is carrying a cake container. You should see Mom's face. They are staring each other down in the kitchen."

"Oh, crap." Mimi made her way around Noah and headed toward the kitchen.

Her bare feet slid on the hallway rug as Mimi came around the corner into the hallway. Her Mother and Dillon were facing each other down in the kitchen as Ann and her father headed down the back stairs out toward the farm. Mimi was torn about which way to go.

In front of the big farm sink, her mother squared off against poor Dillon, who looked bewildered. Mimi's choice was made. Lady Ann could hold her own against Mimi's father. The kitchen was her mother's kingdom, and she took that seriously. Her mother addressed Dillon in an unfriendly tone, "I assure you. We have enough to feed everyone." When her mother lifted her chin and placed her hands on her hips, Mimi stepped toward the kitchen tile.

Dillon looked down at the cake he was carrying and turned to glance toward Mimi. "Didn't you say that your mother loved lemon cake?"

Mimi nodded from the doorway. "Absolutely."

Her mother's mouth shaped into a surprised o. Pink tinged the woman's cheeks as she realized the cake was a gift, not a snub. Mimi was pretty sure most of her siblings had no clue at all what her mother liked or didn't, but she prided herself on paying attention to what people preferred.

As if this was his 100th visit, Dillon made his way toward the fridge. "Do you want me to put your lemon cake in the fridge or do you have another preference? It is better cold, but it would be fine on the counter. I figured after all your hard work, you might like a little treat of your own later."

Her mother's hands froze on her apron and a soft smile appeared. "I can't believe you brought a cake for me. That is so thoughtful!" She shooed her hands toward the fridge. "Almost everything is set out. There is room in this fridge for your lovely cake."

"Of course." He smiled. The man was handsome. Her mother's love for Mimi's father was so deep that Mimi doubted the woman even registered that part. "It is my mother's recipe. I could slip out and purchase you something different if you have a craving."

Her mother waved her hands, flustered. "That is unnecessary. A lemon cake will be delightful later. You will have to share your mother's recipe with me." As Dillon placed the cake box into the fridge, her mother dropped her kitchen towel onto the counter.

"Would you care for a cup of tea? Mr. Dillon is it?"

Mimi let out a breath and left the two alone to get to know each other. Those two were going to be just fine. Ignoring her barefoot state, she stepped down the stairs into the yard. In the distance, she could see Sarah and a girl who must be Juliet with Noah. They were leading a saddled pony out to the far pasture. Mimi laughed at herself. What on earth had she been worried about?

The soft summer grass felt amazing on her feet, springy and yielding. The morning breeze was keeping some of the day's heat away. Mimi found Ann and her father in the barn, talking shop in a way that made her raise her hands to her lips to hide her grin.

Ann stood on the packed dirt floor in red-bottomed shoes without having her heels sink into the earth. The woman had magical abilities. The graceful creature listened with interest as her father bragged about the new goats that were going to be arriving soon, thanks to Adam. Ann brought up how they had been considering adding stables to their camp. Her father regaled Ann with the ridiculous cost of keeping a horse healthy and explained how they were as fragile as hummingbirds... but kids loved them. And in her house, they had. Her first pony had been the joy of her universe for years. Penny had been her first best friend.

When Mimi eased back out into the sunshine, after choosing not to interrupt them, her husband whistled and drew her attention. "Cupcake, get over here and help me put together this balloon arch you ordered. These sections are ridiculous."

Marge was standing next to Adam, holding Tiny in her arms, keeping the little beast away from the filled balloons. The side yard had been set up for the party that would be starting soon. The final touches were left to complete. The little dog looked spoiled in her new owner's embrace. The little furry lady had become content since she had discovered her destiny in a lesbian household and joined Marge and her wife's home. Tiny was now living her best lesbian life with no regrets. Every time she saw Marge's social media, Tiny was having some new, all-lady adventure. The last thing they had done was fit her out in a dog-sized life vest and taken her canoeing. It wasn't a terrible life.

The gender announcement was going to happen when they popped a glitter-filled balloon that both Marge and Tiny were guarding. If anyone got too close, Tiny shot them a glance and growled at their impudence. Mimi went to help. "I'm coming."

When she got close, the big man leaned down and whispered. "I wish you were." She smacked his arm playfully.

When a pink flutter of confetti rained down all around them, Mimi laughed out loud. It had taken Adam two tries to pop the sturdy balloon with the oversized pin. Even though she'd had a feeling, seeing the color was a jolt to the system. The reveal somehow made the whole situation seem more real. They were doing this. She and Adam were becoming a family. Her open hands filled with fluttering shades of rose.

Behind her, she heard her dad's whoop of joy among the cheers. He'd always wanted more girls in the family. Adam cupped her face in his gigantic hands and bent down and kissed her to the sounds of their family's cheers.

Maiden's Blush or Seaside Dream, she couldn't decide on the paint color for the baby's room and Adam was no help at all. He kept telling her to pick out whatever she wanted. Mimi had been in a nesting burst all weekend and had smuggled the swatches inside her purse to ponder during lunch. She hadn't wanted to go over to Adam's Mother's house, but here they were, and things were getting interesting. When his little sister called them this morning and pleaded for them to come over, Mimi had put down her projects and agreed to go. Sarah was a good kid. If she needed their support, she had it.

They'd arrived asking questions, and Sara had explained that she wanted to wait until everyone was sitting down at lunch to talk about her plans for the next school year. So they had waited as Adam's mother smeared mustard on white bread and filled four glasses with room-temperature sweet tea. Weeks ago, they had offered Sarah a place to stay at the farmhouse with them, but she'd turned down their offer. Maybe today was the day she would say yes. They had made space for her.

Mimi completely forgot the sandwich in front of her as soon as Sarah said, "I want to spend my last two years of high school in England."

Sarah's mother stiffened and dropped her sandwich onto her plate. She shook her head as if Sarah were making a joke. "Are you going to ride your dragon across the ocean and back as well? Did you discover a hoard of money in the attic?" She pushed her plate away from herself. "Stop being ridiculous. You are going to stay in Carlton and go to high school here, just like I did."

Paper napkin balled up in her fist, sandwich untouched, Sarah leaned forward and pleaded, "Just hear me out.... Juliet and I have been talking."

"About boarding school?" Adam asked. Mimi straightened in her seat. Ann had shared some details with them about the experience Juliet was having in her high school. Welton Academy focused on helping talented young women make their way into Ivy League schools. The place was filled with gifted young STEM students. A school like that would be perfect for Sarah, but getting accepted wouldn't be easy and the application dates had probably passed. The next year would be starting in just a few weeks.

Across the table, her mother-in-law's face pinched sour. "Adam, you can't take this child seriously." She wadded up her napkin. "I would be here all by myself. That would be completely unacceptable."

Sarah continued. "Mom, that is going to happen in two years, anyway."

"Why? The community college here is fine. You can stay here, help me, and still get your education. Don't be selfish. What would you do at a school like that, anyway? How would you fit in with those snooty girls?" Lips pursed, she shook her head. "The whole idea is ridiculous. You are going to hurt your own feelings if you pursue this."

"Stop it, Mom. Hear her out." Adam bristled next to Mimi.

"Juliet helped me fill out the application a month ago and her mother paid for my application fee," Sarah bravely continued. "I didn't think they would say yes, so I said nothing."

Their mother pushed back her chair as if the gesture would end the discussion. "This is insane. I won't waste my time with this ridiculousness."

"I got an acceptance letter and a partial scholarship." Nervously, Sarah put the letters the institution had sent her on the table next to her plate. Sarah looked toward them for support.

Adam's face softened, and he beamed a smile at his little sister. "Sarah, that is amazing. You little sneak. I'm so impressed that you did this on your own." He looked toward Mimi, eyes sparkling. "We've got her back, right?"

Mimi nodded. "100 percent."

He turned toward his mother, who was standing next to the table with her hands on her hips, scowling. "Mom, Sarah is a smart girl and since she has the grades to get in, I don't see why she shouldn't go. Mimi and I can fill in what is needed financially."

"That would be a waste of this family's money. Sarah can't compete with those richy, rich girls. She isn't smart enough." Her brow furrowed. "How could she even apply without my permission and signature?"

Sarah looked guilty for a moment.

Adam smirked. "She probably had to fake your signature, just like I did a million times. It's my money to waste and not your concern. Having a baby sister who figures out cancer sounds like an amazing idea. Remember, she made it to the state science fair last year? Her teacher believed she could have easily made it to nationals."

Mimi piped up. "That is amazing, Sarah."

Sarah crossed her arms. "Except, I didn't get to go." She glared at her mother.

Their mother waved off the comment. "I signed the papers. I am sure of it. If you didn't get to go, then that was your fault."

Adam shook his head. "I just wish Sarah would have called me. I would have been happy to pay for that trip. It must have hurt like hell to see the other kids head off to go compete."

His mother looked at each of them. "Well, If I'm such a terrible mother, maybe she should go."

Sarah reached out across the table with her hand extended. "We aren't saying that. It's just an opportunity. I didn't think they would let me in when I sent in the paperwork and recommendation letters."

Mimi felt a flush of pride at Sarah's courage. Nothing was going to keep this kid down. They had the money, and Adam refused to spend his inheritance on stuff for himself, so why not spend some of it on an excellent education for Sarah? Spending it on her future seemed like the right thing to do.

The business was doing good, and the shelter was thriving. Even a very expensive school would be just a tiny drop from the bucket of his inheritance. "It's a done deal," Mimi said. "I say we go out and celebrate this news properly! How about Kevin's Pizza?"

Adam's mother pouted in the back seat of his truck next to a beaming Sarah as they drove into town.

"Mom, you don't have much of a choice," Adam explained as he drove. "You can either agree to this and sign the three forms she needs to take with her, or I will start legal proceedings tomorrow morning to get Sarah emancipated or placed under my care."

She grumbled in the back. "Fine. But I will continue to claim her on my taxes, right?"

"Fine with me, Mom."

Sarah bubbled with excitement. "I can't wait to pack."

Their baby girl kicked Mimi's bladder, and she pressed her hand to the curve of her belly. This one was a gymnast, a dancer, or something. Mimi slid her hand over the curve of the baby in her belly and patted them fondly. Once Adam had mentioned how easy it would be for Sarah to get emancipation, his mother had settled down. Maybe they could take his little sister shopping for luggage after they had pizza.

Later, she would to talk Adam about bringing an adorable little mini donkey to their farm. A rescue across the state had sent her its paperwork already. That was a talk for this evening. A naked one. The thought made her smile in a way that made his gaze linger on her at the stoplight. She flashed him a wink.
