Chapter 3 Let's eat up
"Hmm," she found herself saying as she pushed her cart down the grocery isle. "I forget what it was I was going to buy." She turned the corner and came face to face with Josh who also seemed to be wondering what it was he was looking for as well. The question seemed to be written across his face and reflected in his eyes.
Both looked at the other with a puzzled look on their faces.
"She laughed. "Did you forget what you came to the store to buy?" she asked.
Josh, stumbled and then stood still holding onto the handle of his cart like they were in a race and if he wanted to win he had to grip it as tight as he possibility could. A loud crack filled the air and he found himself standing there holding the broken handle in his hands with a startled look on his face.
"My God!" Maddy almost screamed. "How did that happen?"
"I don't know..." Josh replied as he let the handle drop from his hands and it banged loudly into the bed of his cart. "I guess I'll have to get another cart." He turned away glad to get her face out of his eyes.
As he moved he found that his legs didn't wanna go the way he was going. They kept trying to return to her. "Not now," he whispered to himself. "I can't do anything right now." He felt like a drunk walking down the aisles. People were looking at him as if he were.
"Is there anything I can help you with, Sir?" A clerk asked as he stumbled down the aisle they had been stocking.
"No," he replied. "I've just gotta get another cart." He pointed in the direction his legs wanted to go. "The handle on my cart snapped off."
The clerk looked at him funny and went in the direction he pointed. After about five minutes of trying to go get another cart he just gave up. Why try.
But in those five minutes another clerk came to his rescue and gave him another one. He thanked them and let his legs go where they were determined to go.
Maddy was just rounding that corner when he, like Johnny-on-the-spot, appeared beside her, cart-in-hand.
Maddy felt relieved that he'd returned. Why she had no idea. But, she felt safer and happier that he'd returned.
"Do you wanna have a snack once we finish shopping?" She found herself asking him out of the blue.
