Yes I know, short chapters take me forever to write and this long one took me less than a month. Well, I've also had most of this chapter planned in my head for the past year so writing it was somewhat easy. Oh the joys of being autistic and having the time during my job just tweek the little details in my head for many, many months. Anyway, welcome to the tenth chapter and yes this is a long, but I think many of you will enjoy certain parts more than other. As always any constructive comments and feedback is always appreciated. I would like to also thank Tigersman for his job editing this chapter and even putting his own hand in writing part of this story.
"Ok Carly," Katie said as she finished rinsing her hair. "It's time to get out of the bath and dry you off."
"But I want to stay in my bath!" four year old Carly protested.
"I know you do, but we have to get you out and dry you off. You don't want to put your PJs on while still wet do you?"
"No," Carly said, shaking her head.
"Ok then. Stand up and I'll help you out." Carly stood up and Katie helped her jump out of the bathtub. Before Carly could run away Katie grabbed her favorite towel and wrapped it around Carly. She dried her off until there wasn't any water left on her naked body. "Good job. Now let's go to your room and put on your PJs. I heard that you like your Elsa ones."
Carly literally jumped for joy with a big smile on her face. "I love my Elsa PJs. She's my favorite princess."
"Did you know she was my favorite princess too when I was your age?"
"Really?"
"Yep," Katie said as they talked to Carly's bedroom. "When I was your age, I used to watch Frozen all the time. I would pretend I had her ice powers and freeze whatever I wanted."
"I do that too!" Carly exclaimed with joy.
When they got to Carly's room Katie helped her put on her Elsa PJs. Once that was done she had Carly pick out two books she wanted to be read to her. Carly quickly selected two Frozen books and the two of them snuggled into Carly's bed as Katie read Carly her bedtime stories. Midway through the second book though Carly fell asleep in Katie's arms.
Katie couldn't help but admire how cute Carly was and how much she looked like her dad. That thought caused her to pause for a second. It wasn't Carly's fault who her dad was...but it still made her feel uneasy. She decided though to push the thought away and gently lifted Carly up off her and put her under the covers of her bed. She then found her favorite pink teddy bear, named Pinkie and placed it next to Carly. Within seconds, Carly reached for Pinkie and cuddled it as she slept.
Satisfied that Carly would sleep through the night, she quickly walked to the bedroom door, turned off the lights and gently closed the door. Katie let out a sigh of relief that that was over with. When she agreed to babysit Carly she thought it would be easy. She had babysit other kids before and had little to no problem with them. However, Carly was nothing but nonstop energy and couldn't focus on one activity for more than five minutes. Not even the easy, go to distraction of TV would help the little five year old settle down. Now she understood why she was getting paid the sixty dollars. No other babysitter would want to babysit this kid more than once. Still, it was nice have some extra money again and a good portion of it was going to Scott's Christmas present.
With nothing left to do in terms of babysitting Katie grabbed her tablet, laid down on the couch in the family room and started doing some reading she needed to do for school. She knew Carly's parents were not going to be home for another couple hours so she might as well take advantage of the chance to get a head start on some homework, especially since she was going over to Scott's the next day for dinner with her mom. Scott's dad was making burgers and she wanted to try hers with some peppers in them this time. Just the thought made her mouth water. But to get that, she needed to focus on school work, as much as she dreaded it.
An hour went by and the couch was more comfortable than she realized because she was soon fast asleep. She didn't wake up until Carly's parents had come home from their night out and shook her to wake her up.
"Wake up Katie," Carly's mom said nudging her. "You fell asleep."
Katie slowly opened her eyes, saw Carly's mom, nodded and then stretched. "Remind me to not do any sort of reading on this couch. It is too comfortable."
Carly's mom let out a little laugh. "I know what you mean. I've fallen asleep many times on this couch reading a good book."
"I think Carly might have also worn her out," Carly's dad said.
"That's also likely," Katie agreed. "Your daughter is like the Energizer Bunny. The only thing that seemed to make her stop was when I mentioned she needed to take a bath."
"She loves her baths. Something about the water just makes her stop and focus," Carly's mom said.
"I noticed."
"Here," Carly's dad said handing Katie some money. "You deserve every dollar. I just hope you won't mind doing this again sometime."
Katie counted the twenty dollar bills on her hand and was confused. Instead of being given three twenty dollar bills, she was given five.
"Trevor, why are you giving her a hundred dollars?" Lauren asked.
"Well Carly is more than a handful and this may help convince her to babysit for us again."
Katie looked up at Carly's dad. "And maybe trying to get to me to like you again."
"I will admit," Trevor confessed, "that was part of my reasoning."
Katie looked back at the money in her hands, one hundred dollars. "Well, if you pay this well I could maybe babysit again. Next time though I will be prepared with my running shoes on."
"And maybe some Frozen coloring books," Lauren suggested. "Those are the only ones she seems to be interested in."
"Those I can easily bring next time," Katie said.
*********************************************************
Katie sat at the lunch table designated for her and Scott to sit, waiting for him to join her. She didn't like the fact that she had to cancel their date that previous Saturday, but much to her surprise Scott was very supportive when she told him it was to babysit for her dad's daughter. That did kind of surprise her, but Scott seemed to be always full of surprises.
After a couple minutes she saw Scott walking towards their table and she smiled. Lunch and English were her two favorite times of the school day because she got to spend time with her amazing boyfriend.
"Hey there beautiful," Scott said as he sat his tray down and sat in his seat.
"Hello handsome," Katie greeted back.
"So, how was babysitting?" he asked as he grabbed his slice of pizza and proceeded to take a bite.
Katie let out a laugh, remembering what some would describe was a babysitting nightmare. "Let's just say they need to pay me around same amount again if they want me to come back."
Scott finished chewing and swallowed. "Was she that full of energy or just didn't like listening to you?"
"Both," Katie replied instantly. "She didn't want to color for more than five minutes, didn't want to watch any of her favorite TV shows for more than five minutes and didn't want to play hide and seek. The only saving grace was that she loves bath time and would actually sit down for that. Thankfully after that, it was story time and she fell asleep during the second story."
"Sounds like you had one long night."
"It was long, but it was nice in a way. Even though it was rough, I did enjoy it. Carly is a sweetheart deep down." Katie noticed Scott smiling at her. "What?"
"It sounds like you want to spend my time with your little sister."
That was something else Katie loved and hated about Scott. He knew how to cut through the crap and knew exactly how she felt. There were times it was annoying and other times, like this where she was glad she wasn't the only one who understanding how she was feeling. "Yeah, I do...I just don't want to be around them."
"As in your dad and his wife?"
"Yeah. It was awkward trying to be nice to them when they got home. I should give them a chance...but I still hate him."
"Well it is your choice in the end if you want to forgive him or not. I will not force you because it is something you have to decide on your own."
"Thank you Scottie. Sometimes I don't know how you can be so supportive of me when I'm probably making a bad choice."
"If you were making a bad choice, I would tell you."
"Would you really?" Katie asked with a smirk, not believing Scott.
"Yes," Scott said defensively. "I would tell you and even get in a fight with you over it."
"Bull shit."
"Not bull shit."
Katie shook her head, not believing a word Scott was saying. "I'll believe it when I see it."
"You've only seen the sweet, caring, competitive video gamer side of me. You haven't seen how I get when I disagree with someone."
"We'll just have to see what happens if that day ever comes."
The two of them proceeded to make small talk and eat their lunch until the bell rang for lunch to end. They both dreaded their next class because they were impatient to sit next to each other for their last class of the day. What was a fifty minute class seemed like two hours to both of them, especially for Scott who was being constantly bugged by Alyssa for help. Finally he snapped a look at her, and mouthed 'leave me the fuck alone you whore'. Her face became red, furious that Scott just called her a whore.
When class finally ended Scott grabbed his stuff, left the classroom immediately, but Alyssa was hot on his tail.
"Come back here Scott," Alyssa called out after him, but he kept walking. "Hey, autistic dumbass."
Scott had been used to be calling names throughout most of his life, especially by Katie. Over time he grew a thick skin to most of it, but anytime anyone would use his autism he couldn't help but confront them. He stopped where he was and turned to face Alyssa. "I'm not the one who needed tutoring in math just so someone could stay on the cheerleading squad. Guess that makes you the dumbass."
"I'm still on the squad thank you very much. But maybe if you weren't autistic you could have read the signs that I was just using you."
