I guess I got lucky. When COVID hit, I had already separated from my wife and moved into my condo. I'm an IT Tech for an engineering firm, so working remotely was easy.

Since I was single and lived close to the office, I was also the designated home support guy as well. It wasn't a bad gig, when it was needed, I would make house calls to replace problem devices with fresh ones or drop off needed extra equipment. Most of the time it would have only taken me an hour or less to correct the problem, but my boss wanted minimal contact, so it was just replace in kind and repair later. I would spend a few days getting computers sorted and refreshed afterwards for the next time they were needed. I also was given a 20% 'danger pay' premium added to my wage for the added trouble and personal vehicle use.

I started with getting all of my groceries delivered, but after a few disappointing deliveries, decided I had to get fruits and vegetables myself. Other than the work and grocery outings, I was doing my part by staying locked down. I only had one good friend, Dan, and he was staying locked down with his wife and sons. We'd done 'driveway beers' a few times, but it had been a rainy summer and didn't get a lot of opportunities. As the restrictions started to lift, my hopes for returning to normal lifted, but with the cases going up, I decided to keep myself mostly isolated.

I didn't get a chance to do anything other than briefly meet some of my new neighbors, there was an odd mix of retirees and college kids, but not a lot of people in their 30s like myself. I had met one woman, Angela, who lived directly above me. She was the closest I'd seen to me in age, I later learned she was 37, but didn't look it. She was fairly short, probably just a couple of inches past 5', she had a spectacular hourglass figure, and looked like she kept herself in shape without being overly crazy about fitness. Her strawberry blonde hair was slightly curly and ended a couple of inches past her neck. She had that effortless beauty; very little makeup, full lips, and large hazel eyes that expressed her emotions. I doubt I would have ever worked up the courage to talk to her, but I made a poor first... and second... and third impression to ensure that would never matter.

My first meeting with Angela was the day I moved in, she was looking for her cat, Mr. Fuzzles, he had escaped her condo and bolted for the stairwell. I had left the front door propped open while I was moving stuff in, and she found him in the tree out front. She gave me a terse 'thank you' when I retrieved him from the tree for her and I ended up apologizing to the back of her head as she stormed away.

My second encounter with Angela was later that same day. I had finished unloading my stuff from Dan's pickup and when I started it, a big black cloud of smoke blew out the exhaust at her. I tried to explain that I wasn't used to a diesel, I drive a Hyundai hybrid, but she yelled at me for 'rolling coal' and stormed off from me again.

My third encounter with her was probably the worst. I had just gotten home and was checking my mail when I noticed, what I thought, was one of the college girls stretching against the stairwell railing. She had a tight runner's body, and my gaze lingered on her well presented ass a little too long, when I heard someone clear their throat behind me. "That is my 16 year old daughter you're ogling." Angela said sternly. All I could do was blush and try to apologize as she pushed past me. Her daughter smiled at me coyly and brushed past me into the lobby and out the front door.

After that, I got nothing but stern glares from Angela. Her daughter, Hayley, was quite the opposite. Whenever I encountered her, without her mother, she was all smiles and flirtatious touches or 'inadvertent' brushes. I was always polite, but firm in my disinterest, which seemed to only make her more interested.

When the first cases started popping up, the owner of our firm sent everyone home two weeks before anyone else. It was a simple transition, all of the engineers had laptops, so they were notified to take what they needed and go home. I spent the next week running miscellaneous computer components to the engineers that they discovered they needed. Before the self-isolation mandate started rolling out, we were all set.

As the weeks wore on, I found myself enjoying the solitude. I was always a less social person, and I got most of the human contact I needed from work interactions and online chats with my parents in Victoria, my sister in England, and Dan's family only a few kilometers away. My ex wife reached out a few times, but I only talked long enough to make sure she and the baby she was carrying were ok, before letting her go.

It was now mid-July, I had just finished an hour on my exercise bike, when I heard an odd scrape, then a shriek and a loud thud from the floor above me. I was about to dismiss it as Angela or Hayley dropping something, but then I caught the faint sound of someone groaning in pain. I waited to hear the sound of help being given or the injured person getting up, but nothing. The groans started to give way to light sobbing. I came to the realization that Angela or Hayley was probably alone and possibly hurt. I grabbed a mask and headed out my door for the stairwell.

I got to the door and listened, the sobbing was clearer, as if she was on the other side of the door. I knocked on the door. "It's Ken from downstairs, are you ok? I heard a crash." I asked.

The crying stopped, and I heard her take a deep breath. "I fell. I think I'm ok." She said wearily.

"Are you sure?" I asked. "You don't sound ok."

"I'm fine!" She snapped.

I guess it was Angela. "Ok. I'm sorry for bothering you. Have a nice day." I said, then went back down to my condo, fuming.

'What the fuck?' I thought to myself. 'I was only trying to be nice. I get that she doesn't like me, but why was she being such a bitch?'

After a shower, I had calmed down, forcing myself to see it from her point of view: I'm the the asshole that let her cat out, sent a big plume of diesel smoke at her, and was staring at her daughter's ass. I'm sure she thought I was going to assault her or something.

I knew I looked the part of a goon; shaved head, goatee, 6'2" tall, 210lbs, and tattoos on my forearm. The thing is, I had no control over my height, and I had shitty genes that had me looking like Captain Picard at 23. If I didn't work out, my sedentary job would have me at 300lbs like my father, and my tattoos were the Rebel Alliance and the Galactic Empire crests. I was a nerd, but I looked more like a biker.

I decided to go into my home office and get some more work done. I had to get three laptops ready for change out next week. After about an hour, there was a knock at my door. I was puzzled as to who could be at my door, but I grabbed a mask and opened it, revealing Angela standing there with a plate of cookies.

"I'm sorry about earlier." She said, looking very shy. "I was embarrassed about falling and I've been having a really shitty week. I shouldn't have snapped like that, you were only trying to help. I brought these as a peace offering." She said lifting the plate. "I didn't know if you had any allergies. So I went with oatmeal chocolate chip."

I was a little shocked, seeing her standing there. "Uhhhh." I said as my brain tried to kick into gear.

"They're COVID free." She said, her eyes showing her smile. "I haven't been around anyone in almost a month."

"Thank you." I said, taking the plate. "Do... do you want to come in?"

"Actually, I was wondering if you could come up to my place." She said hesitantly. "The cookies aren't a bribe, I promise, they're an apology. But when you heard me fall, it's because I was trying to change a lightbulb, but it's weird, it won't unscrew. I was wondering if you could help?" She asked, tilting her head to the side a little and flashing her big doe eyes at me.

She was so damn cute, and I'm a sucker for cute. "Sure." I replied. "Lead the way."

She gave a little bounce and I could see the smile in her eyes again. "Thank you."

As I followed her up the stairs, my eyes were drawn to her ass. She was wearing tight khaki shorts that did nothing but accentuate her amazing figure. It wasn't quite as small or toned as her daughters, but I thought her ass was way better, the slight jiggle with every step was almost hypnotic. I tried my best to only take glances, instead of the all-out lecherous stare she had caught me using on her daughter.

Mr. Fuzzles greeted us at the door and she showed me the offending light fixture. "I tried standing on a chair, but the bulbs wouldn't budge, the chair slipped, and I fell."

"I can definitely help you with this." I said, reaching up. "It's a par 20 socket, you just have to push and twist." I handed her the bulb and popped the other one out as well.

She looked at me dumbfounded. "It's that easy? I feel so stupid." She said, shaking her head.

"Don't beat yourself up about it." I chuckled. "You don't know something until you know it."

She cocked her head at me and laughed. "Are you trying to be insightful about lightbulbs?"

"It made you laugh." I shrugged. "Am I correct to assume you don't have any replacements?"

"You are. I'll have to order some though, all I have are these." She said, showing me a box of standard bulbs.

"I have some at my place. I'll just go grab you a few." I said, turning to the door.

"You don't have to do that. I'll just need you to tell me what they are again, pair something?" She said.

"It's fine, I've got at least a dozen extra." I replied. "Most of my bulbs are this type."

I returned a few minutes later with a four pack. "There, now you have extras." I said, putting in the two new bulbs.

She stood there, looking at me, with an odd look in her eyes. "Thank you. You're not exactly the guy I thought you were."

"Yeah, I really am sorry about how we met. I don't think I made a very good first impression, and then it just kept getting worse." I said sheepishly.

"That's fair, but I should have taken the blame. I was the one who didn't close my door when the cat got out, and you were really kind to stop what you were doing to help get Mr. Fuzzles from the tree." She said thoughtfully.

"It's the least I could do." I replied. "I am sorry about the cloud of smoke too. I didn't know my friend's truck would do that. I'm more used to cars."

"No, I'm sorry. My ex husband loves to 'roll coal'" she said, using air quotes. "It just made me think you were like him. I felt so bad when I saw how sorry you were, but I was just so mad at him and took it out on you."

"I get it, I sometimes see my ex wife in other people and judge them based on that." I chuckled. It was nice to clear the air, but I was worried about bringing up her daughter. She was starting to warm-up to me, and I didn't want to remind her of catching me being a pervert. I took a deep breath and decided to jump in anyways. "And I'm sorry about perving on your daughter. I know it doesn't make it any better, but I thought she was one of the college girls that lived here. I didn't mean to stare, but I was really caught off guard."

"Ha!" Angela laughed. "Are you going to apologize for every slight you think you've caused me?" She laughed again. "Hayley is a terrible flirt, she knows she looks good and loves to tease guys. She probably did it on purpose." She smiled, her eyes crinkling at the edges. "I wasn't very mad at you, I just had to make sure you knew she wasn't 18. Hayley thrives on attention, she gets that from her father." She put her hand on my arm. It was the first physical contact I'd had with a woman in nearly six months, it was amazingly comforting. "Anything else you want to apologize for, or can we just try and start fresh from today?"

I acted as if I was deep in thought. "Hmmmm... nope, I think that's it. Thank you." I said.

"You're welcome. And thank you for your help." She said, removing her hand from my arm and holding it out. "Hi, I'm Angela. I'm your upstairs neighbor."

"Hi Angela, my name's Ken. Nice to meet you." We shook hands and laughed.

I looked at my watch, it was already 6:30pm. "We'll, I'd better go, let you get on with your evening."

"Oh? Ok." Angela said. "Do you have to? I haven't thanked you for changing the lights and leaving me some extras." She added.

"You don't have to thank me, I'm just being neighborly." I replied.

"We'll, let me be neighborly as well. Can I make you supper?" She offered. "It's been nice talking to you, and I feel bad for being so bitchy before."

"I guess." I replied. "I don't want to intrude on you and your daughter."

Her expression darkened a little when I mentioned Hayley. "She won't be here. She decided to stay with her father for the summer, he's got a pool."

"Oh. I'm sorry to hear that." I said. Angela cocked an eyebrow at me, possibly questioning my intent. "I just mean that although I don't have kids, I know I'd want to spend time with them if I did." I said hurriedly.

Angela laughed lightly. "You're sweet." She said. "I do wish she'd spend at least part of the summer with me, but her dad is the fun one, and with everything that's going on in the world, I can't blame her for wanting to stay with him."

"I guess." I replied, not knowing what else to say.

"We'll, you might as well come in." Angela said. "Do you think we can get rid of our masks? I haven't been anywhere with people, just out for walks."

"I've only been to the grocery store in the last two weeks, are you ok with that?" I asked.

Angela pulled off her mask, giving me a warm smile. "I guess I'll take the chance."

I smiled as I removed my mask as well. Everything felt more intimate once our masks were off, almost like it had just turned into a date. I dismissed the thought almost as quickly as I had it, chalking it up to the lack of female, or human for that matter, contact in so long.

I realized I had been staring at her face blankly for a few moments longer than I should have. "So, what's for supper?" I asked. "I can help in any way you need, just give me very clear directions. My skills in the kitchen are very limited."

"I was thinking about a chicken stir fry." She said, heading towards the kitchen. "You can help by keeping me company while I make it."

She poured us each a glass of wine and asked me about myself while she got started. I told her about my job, my parents, my sister, and Dan's family. She told me about her family, then gave me a summary of her marriage; married young, pregnant with Hayley shortly after, he was a self-centred ass, they had bought this condo as an income property, but when she'd had enough of his lying and (probably) cheating, she left him three years ago. She got the condo and he kept the house. She told me about her job. She was the business manager for a small chain of pharmacies, it wasn't glamorous, but it paid well and she enjoyed it.

We continued to talk easily over supper, she asked about my tattoos, admitting that she'd never watched Star Wars. I feigned disgust at her revelation, but then I admitted that I had never watched Titanic (the only major 'chick flick' I could think of that I'd never seen), to her mock disgust.

After dinner, I insisted on helping with the dishes. I washed while she dried and put things away. I don't know if it was the wine or what, but I was really starting to feel some sexual energy between the two of us. Angela brushed her breasts against my arm as she was reaching for the wok from the drying rack, our hips touched several times, and her fingers slid across mine as I was handing her washed items.

Once the dishes were done, we sat on her couch, each with our third glass of wine.

"I've told you about my divorce, how come you haven't told me about yours?" Angela asked.

"I guess I'm still hurt and angry about it." I said quietly. "I'm not as distanced from it as you are from yours."

Angela reached out and put her hand on mine. "It's ok. I understand if you don't want to talk about it."

Her hand on mine was so soothing and comforting. I had to fight the sudden urge to pull her to me and kiss her. I forced my mind back to conversation and decided to tell her about my divorce.

"We got married at 25, I wasn't totally heads over heels for Trina, but I loved her, and I thought she loved me too. We started trying to have kids when we turned 31,Trina was ready and I thought it was something I had to do to make her happy. After almost two years of trying, Trina wanted to get some tests done. Her results came back first, and it turned out she was already a month pregnant, we were both so excited. Two days later, my doctor called me while I was at work with the results from my tests. I had a sperm count of zero." I took a calming breath.

"My doctor was surprised that Trina was pregnant, but he wanted to run more tests before he would comment further. I assumed that the test was wrong or I did something wrong when I took the test, so I didn't say anything to Trina. After the second round of tests came back and the doctor did a more thorough physical exam, he was certain. I had a blockage that meant there was no way I could have gotten Trina pregnant for at least the past three years." I sighed.

Angela squeezed my hand. "I'm sorry."

"Thank you." I replied, squeezing back. "Anyways, I confronted her, telling her what the doctor said. She barely tried to deny it, Trina was a nurse and she had been having an affair with one of the doctors at the clinic for a few months. I went to Dan's that night, saw a lawyer in the morning, and less than a month later moved in here."

Angela looked at me with sad eyes. "Now I feel even worse about how I treated you when we first met. I'm sorry, I didn't know you had just gone through that."

"It's ok. How were you supposed to know?" I asked. "Besides, I thought we put all of that behind us." I said, giving her a big smile.

"Thank you." She said. "So what happened after you left? Did she tell the doctor?"

"We've talked a few times, she's due next month. She told the doctor, but he didn't want to leave his wife. I don't really know anything else. Whenever she calls me, I always make sure that she and the baby are ok then let her go." I sighed. "I still care about her well being and don't wish her or the baby any harm, but I really don't want anything to do with her anymore. I'd never be able to trust her again."

"I can see why you're still a little raw about that." She squeezed my hand again. "Thank you for telling me."

"Thank you for listening." I replied.

"You're welcoOOOOOOOOme." Angela said, yawning. "Oh my! I'm sorry. What time is it?"

I looked at my phone for the first time in a long while. "Wow! It's almost 11." I told her, stifling a yawn myself.

"I think I should be going to bed. I'm not used to staying up this late or drinking this much on a work night, but I really liked it." She said, squeezing my hand again.

"Me too." I said, starting to stand. I was still holding her hand, helping her to rise as well. When she stood, she was standing in front of me, looking up at me. I reached out and brushed a few stray strands of hair out of her face. "Thanks for tonight, it was the best night I've had in a long time." I said softly.

"Me too." She replied, licking her lips.

I had the urge to kiss her again and this time I didn't force it away. I leaned down, closing the one foot height gap slowly, staring into her eyes, giving her time to pull away if she didn't feel the same way. As I closed in, Angela tilted her chin up. My lips made contact with hers, they were soft yet firm. At first it was a soft tentative kiss, as if neither of us were sure what we were doing, but we quickly figured it out. Angela pressed her body against mine, and I wrapped my free hand around the small of her back, pulling her tighter to me. Our lips mashed together harder. I felt Angela's tongue probing at my lips and I parted them enough to let my tongue dance with hers.
