Back in a time long ago when I was at the tender age of twenty-two, I worked for a Fortune 500 Company and I was part of a team consisting of myself, two other people, and a woman named Jeanette Hackett. I had a crush on her even though she was old enough to be my mother, yet, for all that we were meant for each other.
It all began one Wednesday afternoon when she caught me looking at her leg for the 1,000th. plus time,
"You were looking at my legs again, weren't you, Joe?"
"I am sorry Jeanette, I don't mean to offend you, it's just that you are so attractive it is hard for me not to stare."
"Don't become embarrassed about it because I find it flattering that a handsome young man finds this old woman's legs attractive."
"You are far from being old, Jeanette, in my opinion, you are the hottest woman in this office."
"Joe, you are making me blush when you say that. Would you date me if you had the chance?"
"Yes, I would."
"My husband is leaving for a business trip on Sunday afternoon, so meet me at my house at 6:00 that evening for our first date."
"Are you serious? You are a married woman with children."
"'I'm damn serious, Joe, if you want to date me, this is your chance."
'Okay, I'll see you then."
After I said that, a knot began to develop in my stomach. What have I gotten myself into? Would a jealous husband be gunning for me if he got wind of it? Would I be destroying her marriage? Should I back out tomorrow? Or should I accept her challenge and have a wonderful evening with a beautiful woman? Come on Joe, man up and enjoy the moment. If you're murdered, you're murdered as you'll die happy.
I asked her if she would enjoy going to the concert at the amphitheater down by the river on Friday. She replied that she'd love it. She had always wanted to go but never could, so I thrilled her when I proposed the activity to meet together.
On Sunday I pulled up to the house and rang the doorbell. A young woman about nineteen answered the door. She was the very image of her mother only younger, and when our eyes met I felt something hard to explain but I liked her right away.
"Hello Miss, is Jeanette Hackett here?"
"Yes, let me call her."
She went out of sight but I did hear her say,
"Mom, the man from your work is here."
"Tell him, April dear, that I'll be right down."
When she came back there was a moment of uneasy silence which I broke when I said,
"How are your classes going?"
"Great. I am finished with High School and I am looking forward to college."
"Have you been accepted anywhere yet?"
"Three schools have accepted me but I am leaning toward XXX University."
"That's where I graduated from a short time ago."
"Really! Is it as good as they say it is?"
