Editor's note. I advance the story through my characters, stream of consciousness. I hope to emulate others, real writers, Ken Kesey, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Kerouac, Faulkner even. I don't need people to tell me that I've fallen short. There are aspects of infidelity, but more so than that is a mother's love for her kids and the solace she finds in her tragedy with the kindness of her boss. If you're a jerk please go away.
Hal and I have been married for fourteen years, just seeing him used to make my heart flutter. I melted in his arm when he hugged me. I am embarrassed to admit when we are intimate, l love the smell of his arm pits it makes me so horny. Used to be!
We have four freckle faced red haired bundles of joy. Tim and Pat are fraternal twins, Tim is cerebral and a good basketball player while Pat is four inches taller and plays on a travel team both are twelve and a half.
Billie is a pigtailed little tom boy, kind of like I was and bosses all the kids including younger brother Jack. Billie is ten and Jack is eight. Jack ignores Billie and is full speed all the time, yet he's quiet started reading when he was four. My mom gave him a subscription to the Sporting News so he could read the box scores.
I was at Jack's last eight year old little league a few weeks ago and is coach who is actually the JV baseball coach, approached me and told me that he will be way better than Pat, knows the game and is unbelievably fast. I wished I'd recorded it for Hal, but He was away on case, he's a lawyer that does Mergers. He was still a good dad, but we were like business partners.
Everyone went out for pizza, moms, kids and coaches to Central Market in Poulsbo. Jack and I called Hal and he was so proud for Jack, then I told Jack to go watch some TV.
"Hal, I said, "His coach is the JV coach and he told me if he doesn't get hurt he'll play professional baseball. Said he's world's faster and already is better than Pat. Can you believe that Hal?"
Hal said, "My goodness, I'm pretty pooped babe, let's all go out for pizza Friday night."
We did and the kids so missed Hal when he was away, but he made up for it and was just the best dad. Every time I saw him I just felt this desire to be in his arms."
Hal suggested several years later that maybe I should go back to work, get a job. I was thirty nine now. I had wanted some more kids, but nothing happened. Kind of felt like a part of me had died inside.
My mom after I told her about the idea talked to her younger sister Allie who is only five years older than me. Turns out Allie works for a nationwide financial planner, not the scam life insurance gibberish, but everyone was a certified financial analyst and they had a trading group and lawyers to set up trusts and stuff.
Long story short, Allie's friend Jennifer needed an assistant. I had an accountant's degree from Central Washington University in Ellensburg, Washington. I had been working in a mom and pop accounting shop doing tax prep and quarterlies throughout the year when the twins were in me. I loved being pregnant, you were connected to them and then they started moving in you, probably the best time of my live, nursing Tim and Pat at the same time. My breasts were gigantic. Being boys they nursed halfway through their second year. I expressed milk, until I stopped lactating, maybe three months later.
I had stopped expressing maybe a month and Billie was in me, it was such a gentle pregnancy and delivery. She weaned at about ten months started crawling, then she was walking and squawking at her brothers, no words, just directing them.
Everyone loved it.
Hal had been on the road a bit, and I had a bout of the post-partum depression. I tried to talk to him, but for the first time he seemed bothered by me, he was in Munich working some deal.
Mom came by and held me while I cried and cried. Hal was home again, to stay for a while and Jack was inside me. Hal was amazed, which I thought was weird.
Jokingly asked me if we had a new milkman. I burst into tears and ran upstairs and locked the door to our bedroom. He could sleep by himself and did.
In the morning I handed him a sheet and I said, "I have an appointment for next Wednesday to check the DNA of the baby (I had not named him Jack yet) against yours."
He said, "I'll be there."
At that point I wondered where my perfect husband had been replaced by an alien, I had watched this streaming video about aliens taking over for dead humans. Great I'm now a cheating Martian slut.
