Normally Laurel would have been stunned by the splendor of the private jet, but she was completely distracted and she spent hours trying to think of every person she knew who might be able to help her. She fell asleep a few times, but always woke from awful nightmares full of Carlos and Urs.

When she landed she convinced a cab driver to take her all the way home if she gave him twice his rate. The sun had just come up when the taxi pulled up in front of her house. She paid the cabbie and ran inside. It was early, but Jen was waiting for Laurel in the kitchen.

They hugged and Jen started sharing all the information she'd gotten. "I've already talked to the faculty advisor of the trip and he hadn't even realized that Cyd was gone yet."

Laurel sighed.

"But he said that they can't have gotten too far out of the village they were in the middle of the night. I've also talked to Brittney and she said she would ask Sebastien what he can do."

"That sounds like a good start. How's mom?"

"She finally fell asleep around four but she's furious and crying and won't talk to anyone." Jennifer rubbed her eyes. "I haven't really slept at all."

"Oh, Jen, go to bed. I'll take over from here."

Jennifer didn't put up a fight and she went off to get some sleep. Laurel went to the study to find her father's address book and decide who she could trust to help. The women of the house woke up at various hours of the day but walked around as if in a daze. Laurel finally got a call around four o'clock in the afternoon from Sebastien.

"Laurel, I'm so sorry to hear what has happened to your sister. Such an event adds to the already sad situation your family is in."

"Yeah, I got that Sebastien. What do you have to tell me?"

"Oh yes, I have many friends in Spain and even near the village where your sister ran away from her group. Most think they will most likely travel to Madrid if they're hoping to stay hidden. I've asked my friends to keep a look out and I will travel there myself in the morning."

"Sebastien, thank you so much. Please let me know whatever you find out."

"Of course, goodbye Laurel."

Laurel hung up and started to wait. They heard nothing the rest of the night and nothing the whole next day.

Finally, early Friday morning Laurel received a call. It was Cydalia.

"Cydalia! Where are you?"

"Oh, stop freaking out Laurel! I'm fine! I'm in Madrid with Carlos."

"What do you think you're doing? Is Sebastien with you?"

"Ugh. Yes, 'Mr. Boring' is here."

"Has he told you to come home right away?"

"No can do Laurel. I have a wedding to go to tonight."

"A wedding?" Laurel was really past all patience.

"Yes! Mine! Carlos and I are getting married tonight. He's been offered a job with the Newcastle Magpies and I'm going with him."

"Newcastle? Like Newcastle England?"

"Uh, yeah Laurel," Cyd said boredly.

Laurel almost screamed at her sister but she took a deep breath and calmed herself. "What's your plan Cydalia?"

"Ugh Laurel, I don't have time for this. Just talk to Sebastien"

The phone was handed to Sebastien.

"Laurel?"

"Sebastien, thank God someone rational is there. What's going on?"

"Well, we found them here in Madrid and Cydalia claims that it was their plan all along to get married and now that Carlos has this job offer in England I suppose this is the best course of action."

"...Okay," Laurel didn't know what to say.

"Also, it took a bit of convincing for the Magpies to take Carlos, but after some...financial talks he'll be with them for a three year contract."

"Sebastien, what do you mean financial talks?"

"It's not a big deal, Laurel. It's taken care of now."

"...Sebastien, how much do we owe you?"

"Laurel you owe me nothing."

"Fine, we'll talk about that later, Now what about Cyd. Will they go to England right away?"

"I will arrange for them to fly to New York to see your family before he reports in England."

"I'm not sure that's the best idea..." Laurel objected.

"Cydalia insists on seeing her sisters before moving away permanently."

"Fine. We'll expect them in two weeks. Thank you for everything you've done."

"Don't thank me Laurel, thank-" Sebastien cut short. "Have a good day Laurel."

And with that he hung up. Laurel was confused but decided to not dwell on it since there were so many other things to worry about.

Laurel wasn't sure of the reaction the news would get from her mother, but joy was not what she expected.

"Cydalia's getting married?" she jumped up from the bed. "My baby girl is getting married!" She strode over to her closet and started looking for an outfit.

"Mom?" Laurel questioned.

"Well that is the best news that could come from all this," Margaret said.

"But mother, she ran away in a foreign country!"

"Laurel, we all make mistakes. But luckily Cydalia has come away with a husband...and a very attractive one at that. She always was the luckiest of you girls, and the cleverest."

"Is that all that matters to you?"

"Of course not, the number one thing is that my daughters are happy and well taken care of." Margaret had pulled on her shoes and was walking to the door.

"Where are you going?" Laurel asked.

"I'm going to tell Kathy Danielson the news of course. She'll need to know."

Laurel collapsed back onto the bed.

The following Wednesday Cydalia and Carlos arrived on the Bennett's front porch. Margaret welcomed her daughter in joyfully. Cydalia was all smiles and giggles as she came into the house. Katarina was also overjoyed to see her twin sister and she blushed as Carlos walked past her and smiled. Heidi was rather indifferent as she had never really been bothered by Cydalia's ridiculous behavior. Laurel and Jennifer were both less than excited to see their sister and her new husband in their own home.

Cyd came bursting in throwing her purse at Jennifer who rolled her eyes and set it on the hall table. Carlos walked in a bit slower. He stopped in front of Laurel.

"Laurel, it's good to see you."

"I wish I could say the same," Laurel wouldn't look at him. He continued to the living room, Kat at his heels.

Jennifer and Laurel exchanged a look, "Be nice, Laurel," she whispered and then joined the others in the living room. They took a seat as tried to listen as Cyd was sharing all the details of her wedding in Spain. Carlos remained totally silent. Laurel was so annoyed she couldn't retain one thing her sister said.

"Laurel? Would you get Carlos and me some lemonade?"

Laurel stared at her sister.

"Laurel?" Cyd repeated.

"Yes, Cyd. I will get you and Carlos some lemonade." Laurel stalked out of the living room and into the kitchen, making sure to slam each door she went through. She threw the cupboards open and grabbed two glasses. One shattered as she slammed it on the counter.

"Damn!" she said through clenched teeth as the glass cut her palm. She grabbed a dish towel and went to the sink to clean the cut. Cyd came through the door and watched Laurel clean her hand for a moment before grabbing her a bandage from the kitchen first aid kit. Cyd proceeded to pour the lemonade into glasses while Laurel finished with her hand.

"Laurel, I know you're angry," Cyd seemed almost apologetic. "You're mad that I ran away in Spain and you're made that I'm married to Carlos and you're not."

Laurel snorted, "Cydalia that is the last thing I'm angry about."

"What then? That I had an affair? It's 2019 Laurel, not the dark ages. People have sex...well not you" Cyd looked at Laurel who said nothing so Cyd continued, "It's not like it's a big secret Laurel. And it is a pity...Carlos is wonderful." She licked her lips and Laurel had to look away.

"Do I really disgust you that much Laurel?"

"Cyd, you're my sister and I love you, but I can't believe you did what you did."

Cyd looked down and when she looked back up there were tears in her eyes. "I know you might not believe me Laurel, but I do love him. And he loves me...and like it or not we're stuck together."

Laurel looked at Cyd in a new light. Her sister wasn't just a silly party-girl. She was scared of the future and of leaving her family for good.

"Carlos and I are going to be together forever," Cyd grabbed Laurel's hand, and brought it to her stomach, "I'm having his baby."

Laurel looked at Cyd and saw the truth of it in her eyes.

"Cydalia, how do you know?"

"I've known for just a couple weeks. It happened right away, before we were married. We never used condoms so when Urs showed up and insisted we get married I went with it."

"Wait Urs? Urs Buhler?"

"Yeah," Cyd nodded her head. "Urs was the one that found us in Madrid and arranged our wedding. He also found Carlos that job in Newcastle."

"Urs Buhler?"

"He told me not to tell you, so don't tell Carlos I told. You know, I don't think he's quite as big a jerk as we all thought at first."

Laurel stood silent for a moment then wrapped Cydalia in a hug. It was the first time she had ever felt so bonded with her sister.

"Does Carlos know?" she whispered.

"Not yet," Cyd whispered back, sniffling.

"It's going to be okay Cyd. I promise."

Cydalia and Carlos stayed for a week then left for Newcastle with plans to come home for Christmas. Laurel knew she should tell Jennifer everything that had happened with Urs in France, in Switzerland, and his hand in Cydalia's marriage, but she was too embarrassed to share it with her. Laurel was utterly disgusted with herself that she could have so poorly judged a man that had done so much for her own happiness. She was also heartbroken over the fact that she would probably never see him again and assuredly never feel him hold her like he had her last night in Switzerland. She tried not to think about it and went back to life as usual in Willow Springs New York.

Life went on as it always had in Willow Springs. The hot summer melted into a cool and lovely autumn. Laurel was hard at work with the wine business that was on the upswing. A renewed and fair partnership with the Izambard Winery in France and a new marketing strategy thanks to training with the International Guild of Family Owned Businesses had Laurel feeling fantastic about the future. Jennifer was offered a partnership with the veterinarian in Willow Springs and the promise that she would take over the practice in five years when the owner retired. Heidi was constant as ever with her piano pupils and her work at the library and Katarina was putting together a portfolio and collection trying to be accepted at Parsons School of Design in New York City for the spring semester. Even Margaret was back to normal, happy that at least one of her five daughters was married and she was ever on the lookout for single men for the others. She spent the bulk of her time shopping for baby things for the grandchild that was due in March.

Cydalia had told Carlos about the baby while they were visiting and he had been extremely happy about the news. Laurel kept in close contact with Cyd in England, preparing to take action at the first notice of trouble with Carlos, but things seemed to be going very well for the newlyweds.

On an early October afternoon Laurel and Jennifer were getting lunch in town and Brittney's mother, Kathy came in. Seeing the girls, she ran right over to share her news of the day.

"Girls! I've just come from beauty shop where I heard that a gardener has been hired to prepare the Miller Mansion...AND a house cleaning crew has been there all week. Rumor has it David Miller is going to be coming back to town this weekend!"

Laurel looked at Jennifer whose eyes had gotten wide as half dollars.

"How exciting," Laurel said. "It will be good to have him in town again."

"Yes! Don't you think so, Jennifer?" Kathy said, implying things with her tone.

"Um, yes. It will be nice to see him again. Do you know if his sister is coming with him?"

"No. I believe he's coming alone."

"Ah." Jennifer nodded.

"Thank you for telling us Kathy," Laurel smiled as the woman walked away.

Laurel looked at Jennifer waiting for her to say something.

"What?" Jennifer asked.

"Well, what do you think?"

"I don't think anything. I don't think our paths will cross too much and if they do, I'm totally over it."

"Really?" Laurel was not convinced.

"Laurel, do you really think I would so easily fall for him again?"

Laurel smiled, "I think he's more likely to fall for you again."

"I don't want to talk about this anymore."

And the subject was dropped.

Saturday morning was a lazy day at the Bennett house. Laurel was typing at her computer, Jennifer was sewing a patch on some jeans and Heidi was looking through book orders. Katarina was sitting outside to do some sketching but she came running inside scaring everyone.

"David Miller's here!" she yelled.

"What?" Jennifer looked panicked.

"He's here! He just drove up the street on his motorcycle and that guy is with him, the really hot, but super rude one."

"Urs," Laurel almost dropped her laptop as she bolted up from the couch.

Margaret, having heard her daughter came running into the room. "Heidi, put away that mess! Jennifer, hide those old clothes somewhere! Laurel do SOMEthing about your hair!"

Laurel felt her hair; it was still up in a messy bun from after her shower. She ran to the hall mirror and shook it out hoping it would look somewhat styled. She ran back to the living room and sat down.

The doorbell rang and Kat went to open it.

Laurel heard voices from the hall.

"Welcome back to Willow Springs, David!" said Kat.

"Thank you, I'm glad to be here. Willow Springs is so beautiful in the fall."

"Welcome Mr. Buhler."

"Thank you," was his only reply.

"Um, please come see everyone. They're in the living room."

Laurel heard Kat leading them to the living room. David entered first followed by Kat, then Urs. Laurel's first thoughts were on Jennifer whose face she could not see, but she did see David look right to her first. No one spoke for a moment then Margaret spoke up,

"David! It's so nice to have you back in town. How are things?"

"Uh...very good, thank you," he said breaking his gaze at Jennifer. "Urs and I thought a Harley trek to the country would be a nice fall getaway."

"Well, I hope the scenery is as beautiful as you remember."

David looked back at Jennifer, "It's even lovelier than I remembered."

Laurel saw Jennifer look down.

The room fell back into silence until Laurel spoke, "How long do you two plan to stay in town, Mr. Buhler?"

Urs looked up for the first time, "David may stay a while, but I return to the city tonight."

"Ah," Laurel swallowed the lump of disappointment in her throat.

"Well, we really must be going," David said suddenly.

"Already? You just got here," Margaret reminded.

"We only stopped to say hello." David said and fled from the room.

Urs nodded a goodbye and followed his friend.

Margaret went back to the kitchen dejected. Kat and Heidi went back to their tasks. Laurel looked at Jennifer who was very white and shaking a bit.

"Are you alright, Jen?"

"Of course," she answered, "just flustered that's all."

"Okay, can I get you anything? Tea?"

"Tea would be nice."

Laurel stood to go to the kitchen.

"Laurel?" Laurel turned back to Jennifer.

"Yeah, Jen?"

"He looked at me the same way he did last Christmas."

Laurel smiled and continued to the kitchen.

The next day Laurel was taking a bike ride through the chilled air. She happened to pass the Willow Springs Elementary School and notice two Harley Davidson motorcycles in the parking lot. Laurel knew they had to belong to David and Urs so we rode over towards the bikes. As always, her curiosity got the best of her and she decided to investigate. He put her bike on its stand and walked along the perimeter of the building. When she rounded the first corner she spotted David and Urs over on the playground. Two very tall men among the monkey bars and swings was a funny site. Laurel was too far away to hear what they were saying but she watched their body language to figure out what in the world they were doing.

David was pacing and gesticulating wildly. Urs stood calmly watching David in his frenzy. David walked to the end of the play structure and then slowly walked toward Urs. He said something to which Urs replied. David stood and said something; it looked like he was reciting. Urs nodded then David got down on one knee opening a fake ring box. Urs laughed and clapped David on the back.

Laurel understood what they were doing. David was practicing a proposal!

David went back to do the entire ordeal again and Laurel hurried back to her bicycle to escape the scene before they saw her. Laurel hurried back home and rushed inside to find Jennifer.

"Jen, let's do dinner," she said excitedly.

"Eh, I'm not really hungry." Jennifer was busy looking at something on her computer.

"Well I am and I think we should get really dressed up and go eat dinner."

Jennifer looked up, "Why?"

"No reason! I just think you should look really good tonight."

"Me?"

"I mean us! We should look good. You always feel better when you're dressed up. I'll even do your hair."

Jennifer gave Laurel a suspicious look, but then she slowly closed her computer. "Fine." She stood up and went to her closet to find something to wear.

Laurel ran to her room to do the same. She had a gut feeling that David would be making an appearance within the hour. Laurel threw on a dress and went back to Jen's room to do her hair and makeup. Laurel distracted Jennifer with work questions so she wouldn't ask why Laurel was suddenly so excited to go out. Jennifer was stepping into her shoes when there was a loud roar outside. Laurel went to the window and peeked out; it was David riding up on his Harley. Urs was not with him.

"Is someone here?" Jen asked.

"Uh, no, just a car going by," Laurel found Jennifer's earrings and handed them to her. "Put these on then come downstairs." Laurel ran from the room and down the steps to get to the hall before any of her sisters even heard the doorbell ring.

When it did ring, Laurel took a deep breath and opened the door with a big smile. "Hi David!"

"Hey Laurel," David ran a hand through his hair, obviously nervous. "Uh, is Jennifer here?"

"Jennifer?" Laurel mocked ignorance, "Yeah, she's here. Jennifer? Are you ready?" She yelled up the stairs.

Jennifer came down the stairs still fitting one earring into her ear, "Laurel this is silly I-"

Jennifer was about half way down the steps when she looked up to see David in the doorway.

"Hi." She said.

"Hello Jennifer," he said looking at her. The way her dress hugged her body was majestic and Laurel applauded herself for her sneaking success.

Jennifer came down the rest of the steps.

"You look...amazing," David said.

Jennifer blushed.

"Maybe you guys want to talk?" Laurel tried to help David out.

"What? Oh -- yeah!" David snapped out of his trance. "Jennifer, may I talk to you privately?"

"Sure," Jennifer replied nervously. "We can go to the living room."

She led him into the room and shut the door behind them. Laurel stood watch in front, casually leaning against the wall with a contented look on her face.

Inside the living room David began to nervously pace. Jennifer stood beside the couch watching him.

"Are you alright, David?"

David stopped and looked right at Jennifer, "Jennifer, I have thought about nothing but you for the last ten months. Every thought of you was like a knife in my chest, thinking that I had lost the only woman that I ever loved."

"David, I-"

"Jennifer, please let me say what I need to."
