Thomas finally arrived at the rural village of Bal. After a two hour drive in his rented Toyota, he was excited and nervous. As the country road turned into the village's main street, he slowed down enough to look at what there was of the residents' community. A small Russian Orthodox church, a single floor school, what might be a community center, and a general store. Perhaps there was a postal office and village office somewhere.
Thomas took a deep breath and slowly exhaled. There is a lot at stake in what is about to happen. If this plays out as hoped, it will change his life. A lot went into getting to this moment. He wanted to see her, hear her voice in person, touch her skin. She was intended to be his wife after all, but this will be their first time seeing each other that is not over the Internet.
As she instructed, he stopped the car in front of the church building and shut the engine off. He got out, dressed in his jeans and sports jacket, to look around for any sign of someone he was supposed to meet. The sky was blue and he felt the sunshine, on an otherwise cool day.
A middle-aged woman walked towards him from a bench. She must have seen him arriving and he clearly was an outsider.
"TOMASS?" she said with an inquiring tone.
"Yes, I am Thomas," he replied with a smile.
She smiled back, saying something he could not understand, and seemed to gesture that he follow her. Thomas caught up with her as they walked past several houses. They had no common language so the walk was quiet. The houses were modest but respectable and well kept. She came to one house, knocked on the door, and stepped to the side. Thomas stood in front of the door and waited to see if Oksana would be the one to open it.
The door opened and an old woman stood. She smiled, looked at him up and down, and gestured to him to come in. Sitting in the living room was a man that Thomas assumed was Oksana's grandfather. The old man looked at him carefully trying to size him up. Thomas did his best to smile warmly, and respectfully approached the old man and held out his hands. The old man said a few things, stood up, and took Thomas' hands and smiled.
All heads turned towards a doorway to see a girl standing and nervously smiling. She was about 5'4", blond, wearing a traditionally colored dress and flat-heeled shoes, and looked straight at Thomas.
"You are Thomas?" she asked anxiously and in a soft voice. "I am Oksana."
Thomas turned to her fully and smiled. She was stunning in person. He took both her hands, and reached over to kiss her on the cheek. He knew others were watching and he did not want to move too quickly with a kiss on the lips. "It is so wonderful to finally see you, to hold your hands," he said quietly.
They sat next to each other on the sofa, and she made the introductions. Indeed, the old man was her grandfather, the old woman was a family friend, and the woman that brought him to the house was her aunt. Thomas respectfully smiled at each of them.
With all eyes on him, he pulled out a narrow jewelry box and gave it to Oksana.
"My dear, this is my gift to you," he said.
She smiled and opened the box. It was a gold necklace.
"Thank you very much, Thomas," she breathed, and delicately took it out of the box.
"May I put it on you now?"
"Yes of course."
Thomas pushed back her long blond hair, unclasped the necklace, and moved his hand around her neck to refasten it. She touched it lightly, and sighed softly. He heard the older woman say something about it. Oksana turned to her grandfather, and he nodded approvingly.
"It looks lovely on you, Oksana," Thomas told her.
With Oksana interpreting, Thomas asked to hear her grandfather's own story and his story about raising Oksana. Then Thomas gave his own story back to her grandfather.
"Sir, I believe in tradition," he continued. "I believe a man should be strong and true. A man must take care of his woman and his family. I promise to take care of your treasure. I will protect her and she will never be hungry. I will provide her with guidance and love. We will learn to love each other."
The old man asked something and Oksana interpreted. "He wants to know if you will be firm with me. You said you will give me guidance. But if I do something I am not supposed to do, if I disobey you, will you punish me?" She ended this question by looking downwards.
Thomas wondered if this was a trap and had to be careful with this question. So he tried to feel out the expectation first.
"Oksana, is it normal in your culture for a husband to punish his wife if she does wrong things?"
She glanced at his eyes while still looking down, "yes, I think a little, he is expected to be like a father, and spank her if she does this."
Spank her? Corporal punishment is expected? He didn't know about anything like this.
"Please tell your esteemed grandfather that I am older than you. I have greater wisdom and I am responsible for you. I will provide you with guidance and I will be very fair and understanding. If you do wrong, then I will explain it to you."
She listened intently, and interpreted this to her grandfather, but there was a tone of greater expectation from them both, which Thomas was observing carefully.
"Also tell him, that I am responsible for you like a father is to his children. If you still do not obey me, if you continue to do wrong things, then I will do what I must and correct your behavior. I will not hesitate to raise my hand on your behind."
Her own facial reaction showed relief. She interpreted again to her grandfather and he smiled and nodded back to Thomas, saying something.
