The winter of 2023 turned to summer and Sam and Kate's wedding was looming large in the calendars of at least three households on the moor. It was to be a small wedding service in a pretty local church, but there would a much larger reception at Mike and Saira's hotel later in the day. Of course, Mike had told Sam and Kate about their encounter with the big cat and Amyus Conybeare, but as they were local and had already heard the stories, they weren't put off from hiring the hotel. Everyone agreed that it was strange that the beast had attacked without provocation though! Mike had the new security cameras operational, plus safety plans were in place, just in case anything went wrong on the big day. They would use the dining room of the hotel for the formal meal and dance and then the huge reception area for music and dancing until late in the evening. A menu had been agreed with the hotel chef, musicians employed and everything was set! Mike was sure that every angle was covered and in the event of any problems, they could lock the doors and windows and keep everybody safe inside. This wedding was special to Mike and Saira, as Sam and Kate had become good friends and they wanted the happy event to go off without a hitch.

The wedding service and reception sorted out, Kate and Laura were busy with plans for everything else. Laura's baby was almost due and she had resorted to maternity leggings and a smock instead of her usual overalls or jeans. Kate hoped that the baby would hang on long enough to allow Laura to continue as matron of honour. Laura on her part had said that she would get to the church, even if she had to cross her legs to do it! Kate went through everything again.

"OK, the church is booked for two o'clock, then we go to the hotel, have the reception and head back here to the farm and get changed. Then we are due back at the hotel for seven thirty to party!"

Sam's Dad and his step-Mother were coming over for the wedding and staying for a holiday from Australia, so they would take a room in Sam and Kate's house, while Kate's extended family were staying at the hotel, so they could party through the night if they wished. Sam and Kate weren't going to take a honeymoon yet, as with Sam's family over, it would have been too bad to disappear after just one day!

Amyus Conybeare had dropped in to see them on a few occasions recently and seemed quite excited to be invited to the reception. He had declined the invitation to the church, but nobody really knew why. His reasons were vague and if pushed, he would remember a previous engagement and walk quickly away. The man never seemed to drive or ride on any form of transport, but then he never seemed to leave the moor. Although he had told everybody that he lived a short walk away across the moor, several hikers had reported that there were no houses within ten miles in the direction he gave them. He was a mystery and make no mistake! But, he had certainly saved Mike's life and seemed to have some power over animals generally. He was also very knowledgeable about the moor and farming on the moor and Mark and Laura had learned a lot about their flock from him.

"It takes all sorts, I guess!" Said Sam.

The night before the wedding, Sam stayed over at Mike and Laura's house, it being unlucky for the bride and groom to be together until the wedding itself. Laura, a hairdresser and both of the happy couple's Mothers descended on Kate during the wedding morning and after a typical 'Laura Breakfast', they proceeded to get Kate ready for the church.

"Now, there's still time to back out and get a chap with a proper job, y'know!" Joked her Mum, while Laura struggled into her Matron of Honour dress.

A maternity bridesmaids outfit had been hard to find, but they had located a seamstress in Taunton who had made her a lovely, flattering dress, along with dresses for Saira's daughter, Ava and Kate's niece. All three of them looked amazing! When Kate was finally free of hairdressers, family and fussers, she put on the finishing touches to her ensemble and turned around to show them all the result. She was radiant! She had chosen to wear green, to complement her red hair and as she said, it would have been hypocritical to wear white anyway!

Meanwhile, Sam was being looked after by Mark and his appearance was now completely immaculate. As best man, Mark was concentrating on doing everything properly and Sam had full confidence in him. They were more brothers than friends, as they always said! At the allotted time, they piled into the pickup and headed for the church.

Sam sat and waited. Kate was never late, but it was now two fifteen and there was no sign of her. Sam was getting a little worried in case something had happened, but Mark was completely calm and confident that she would appear at any time. The vicar was tutting a bit, but just when Sam was about to make a run for home to see where she was, the little organ struck up the wedding march and everyone took their places. The church had been decorated by friends with wild flowers and ferns and it looked lovely. All their close family and friends were there of course, plus the craftspeople who hired Sam and Kate's workshops and a few other local tradesmen who would have been insulted if they had not been asked. Kate seemed to be almost shining as she walked up the aisle on her Father's arm. Everybody else was also smiling and Sam was... well, as usual he thought he was the luckiest man around! The service was quite short, with a couple of favourite hymns and the vows they had written and eventually they turned away from the altar as man and wife at last!

Outside the church there was quite a crowd of moor folk who just wanted to be there to see Kate's dress, chat to friends and enjoy the good feelings that spread all around the ancient building. The confetti they held was water soluble and animal friendly as the vicar had insisted and the amount thrown over them as they passed seemed endless. Poses were struck for the photographer and as well as the typical wedding photos, the various family groups and the vicar had their picture taken, along with random crowd shots. The limousine, loaned for the day by a company that had commissioned Kate to paint their fleet, then sped Mr. and Mrs. Wise -- the newly weds - over to the hotel for the reception. Laura had started to get cramps, but managed to get the two younger bridesmaids into her car and over to the reception before she had a sit down to recover.

After the meal and speeches, the happy couple enjoyed some dancing and socialising, mingling and chatting with their guests. Laura was getting more and more cramps and Mike was getting worried that they might have to leave for the hospital soon. Laura brushed it all off, but secretly she was holding her breath!

Mike had decided that he should check that everything was ship shape at the reception and came across Amyus Conybeare looking thoughtfully out of the window. This was unusual, as Amyus was normally in the thickest part of the party, dancing up a storm. Mike took a pause to stand next to him and follow his gaze.

"Penny for your thoughts, Amyus." He said.

"Eh? Oh, it's you Michael!" Amyus was still quiet.

"Are you OK?" Asked mike.

"Ah,yes!" Amyus regained a bit of his usual smile, "Just thinking."

Mike made to leave.

"Michael, All of this new technical gubbins you've put out there. Do you trust it to tell you the truth?"

Mike thought it was an odd thing to ask, but replied, "Yes, Amyus, it shows everything that is out there."

"Ah, good!" Amyus said distantly. "And what of things that may not be there?" He asked.

Mike didn't really know what to say, but humoured the little man by saying, "It won't show what's not there, but it will always show what is!" He said.

Amyus turned to him. "Something's happening out there Michael, and it might not be totally here when it arrives, if you take my meaning. Watch your technology," he spat the word, "to the west if things go wrong."

Like a cloud had moved from the sun, Amyus suddenly beamed at Mike.

"We'd better get back to the party, Michael, or that wife of yours will be on the warpath!" He laughed.

Mike laughed too and put a hand on Amyus' shoulder. They went back to the crowded room and Amyus joined the dancing with tremendous energy. Mike went to check the new cameras, but nothing was showing on the monitor screens. Why did their short exchange make him feel so wary? He had believed that Amyus was unflappable, but his little reverie and warning made Mike very uneasy indeed!

It was time to leave and Sam and Kate observed wedding rituals such as throwing the bouquet and were then swished back to the farm, where the limo driver bade them farewell. Sam changed into semi-casual gear, remembering to clean random confetti from and hang up his suit, while Kate slipped out of her dress and into her evening outfit. A simple T-shirt dress and low shoes. Checking the time, Sam made her a cup of tea.

"Good afternoon, Mrs Wise!" he exclaimed, "Can I interest you in a hot drink?"

"You could probably interest me in a lot of things right now, but we must get back to the hotel if we are to keep to the schedule!" Kate was as businesslike as she could be. "Afterwards, we'll see!" She twinkled.

"I love you Kate, you look even more beautiful than usual today!" smiled Sam.

Kate chuckled happily, "You scrubbed up pretty good too, y'know! I wouldn't want to be doing this with anybody else, my love!"

They kissed a long kiss full of promise and it was time to go...

Saira and Mike greeted them personally as they returned to the hotel for the evening dance. Kate's family were, of course, already there and Sam's family had been invited to stay in a spare room for the afternoon too, so there was quite a group already drinking in the bar when they arrived. A cheer went up and they were mobbed by family and the few friends already there. Sam was always amazed at how Kate's family could seemingly all talk at once, while still understanding the conversation entirely! People were now arriving in their droves, so Sam and Kate made their way into a back room so they could make an entrance later on.

They found Laura with her feet up on a small table, huffing a little. Her cramps had persisted and although she had eaten very little of the wedding meal, she was not feeling hungry at all at that moment.

"Are you OK, love?" Kate asked her friend.

"Oh yeah!" replied Laura, "It's just a warning shot, I reckon!"

"Well take it easy and if anything changes, get Mike to take you to hospital PDQ!"

"I will, I promise," Laura grinned, but her fingers were crossed behind her back.

The evening was exceptional! Sam and Kate danced and laughed and Kate was starting to get used to being called 'Mrs. Wise', when Mike came over to the two of them and told them that he and Laura were leaving.

"Is everything alright?" asked Kate hurriedly.

"Oh, yes" replied Mike, " but she's had a long day and says that she needs to get some sleep."

"OK, but do take care!" Kate was worried about her friend. She would hate to think that her wedding might have caused a problem for her!

Mike said his goodbyes and Kate went out to their pickup to thank Laura in person.

"I Made it!" Laura laughed, but her face was very red and she was having trouble just breathing normally, "I really thought I was going to be making an early exit!"

"Me too!" Smiled the new Mrs. Wise, "But I want you to take it easy now and I'll see you tomorrow some time."

"OK, but take your time. It will be your first married day and you may have other things on your mind, after all!" There was a typical Laura smirk.

As Mike drove away, Kate waved them off and returned to the party.

Much, much later, Sam and Kate slumped in their big old armchairs in the sitting room, enjoying the quiet. Sam's parents would be back soon, but for now, all was still. They were just getting things together to go up to bed, when they heard a car in the yard. A couple of minutes later, Sam's step-mother, Teri, came rushing in with a worried look on her face.

"Sam, can you go out and help your Dad, please? We've just hit an animal of some sort in your lane and the crash made him bang his head."

Sam dashed out to see if his Dad was alright, but he was already out of the car and wiping his forehead with a handkerchief.

"The bloody thing came over the hedge right in front of me! There wasn't time to do anything, so I hit the brakes and skidded and managed to bash my head on the side window frame as we swung round. It's only a small cut, but you know head wounds..."

"Did you lose consciousness at all, Dad?" Sam asked in a worried tone.

"No, just a tap, but Teri wants me to take it easy all the same."

"Well I want you to go and talk with Kate. She's always good at sorting out the best course of action when accidents happen, so we'll follow her suggestion.

Sam's Dad protested, "I don't want to be a nuisance, especially not tonight"!

"You won't be -- we were only getting an early night!"

Five hours later, they were all coming out of Musgrove Park Hospital's Accident and Emergency Unit, having had Sam's Dad checked out, X-Rayed and generally prodded all over. He now had a clean bill of health and was trying to head off all the fussing from Teri.

"Now, come on Bill," she was saying, "At our age, we can't be too careful can we?"

"Ah, I'm alright." Bill smiled at his wife. He knew that she was only worrying for his sake, so he could take it all!

When they had hit the animal, they had been driving Sam's old Subaru so while they were getting Bill sorted out in the hospital, Sam had looked his car over. There was a bit of a dent in the bonnet and some scratches along the offside wing, where it had scraped the wall at the side of the track, but otherwise it seemed fine. Tomorrow he would take it for a drive and see if it showed up any other problems. He would also go to see Mark to tell him that there had been another animal incident in their area. Bill had told him that after the impact, the animal had run off across the fields, so there was not going to be a carcass, but there might be a bit of fur or something they could get a test done on to try to identify whatever it was. They went to their respective beds and managed a few hours sleep before the new day was upon them.

Kate was up first and went off to the kitchen to put the kettle on. Two minutes later, she was running back up the stairs whooping and shouting madly. Sam leapt out of bed and went out to see what his wife was up to. Bill and Teri also got up to see what all the fuss was about.

"It's Laura! She's had the baby! A boy! All doing well!" She shouted. "Mark must have tried to call us last night, but we were in the hospital and missed it. I've got a text now!"

Kate was already messaging Mark to see what was happening, where he was and if he wanted to join them for breakfast. The reply was that Laura and baby were fine, but they had kept her in for a bit and Mark was on his way over, now that he knew they were awake. Breakfast was a happy affair, but Sam decided not to mention the bit of the accident relating to the animal and made sure the others didn't either. No point in taking the edge off of this very happy news! Plenty of time for him to go out to look around after Mark had gone home. Mark was invited back at any time for food and Kate was planning on a visit to the hospital to see her friend as soon as she was allowed. What a flippin' long and exciting day it had been!
