Margot knocked lightly at the office door that was half ajar. Mr. Caine looked up from his notes for the evening ESL class that he taught. While there were many classes of this nature in Budapest, his had a special cache associated with it. Many senior executives from firms all over the city sought credentials from the most advanced English course in the region. Top marks in the class usually paved the way to greater opportunities for the student, and the class was always overbooked. Mr. Caine liked keeping the class small to encourage greater participation and interaction with all students, and because of this, he was able to command a price far in excess of what other classes of this nature would cost. His students were typically a 'who's who' of important business leaders in the city that wanted to refine their English language skills to near native perfection.
"Come!" Mr. Caine shouted at his door, and Margot ventured inside. He swung around in his chair to evaluate the disturbance and was struck by the sight in front of him. Standing before him was a young lady, a vision, perhaps 5'8" with a wide, genuine smile and the most striking eyes he had seen. They shimmered in the light, seeming to change color from green to hazel, dependent on the angle. His eyes took her in, and she blushed as he stared hard. She wore a low cut, but professional, green blouse that covered, but did not hide, her impressive figure. Her black skirt and stockings were modest, yet alluring, and intrigued him deeply. Her dark hair was highlighted with red, and it made her the center of attention, he was sure, in any crowd.
"Mr. Caine? Sir? Hello! I'm Margot. I think your assistant let you know to expect me?" she spoke in a bright, happy tone. Her Hungarian accent delighted him, and he had still not blinked since she entered.
"Yes. Yes, Miss...Janis?" he pronounced as though she were French.
"You are close, sir! It's 'Yanis' but I sometimes wish I could tell people I was French!" she beamed.
Her smile was infectious. He couldn't help but smile back. "Well how can I help you Miss Janis? What brings you by? Please, have a seat." he offered, gesturing to a seat next to him and standing.
His eyes didn't leave her as she sat, and crossed her long, toned legs. She could feel the heat of his stare and his bright blue, intelligent, playful eyes that did not waver from her.
"Well sir, I'm sorry very much to trouble you but I think perhaps you are the only one that can help me. I tried to register for your class, the only one that fits in my schedule, but I see that it is closed."
"Yes," he began slowly "tell me why you're so interested in this class. There are many others of course."
"Well," she offered "I hear you are the best...I mean...that it is the best!" she blushed. "It has always been my dream to travel to the US someday and work, but I don't think my English is good enough to work in an American office. And definitely my writing. I am hoping with your guidance I could improve!"
Margot delighted him immediately. "From your introduction, your English sounds quite good. I could definitely see placing you in my advanced course, but as you say, it's quite full at the moment."
"Yes, I know. And there is one more thing." She sounded a bit emotional as she continued, "The price of the course, it is a full year's salary for me..."
"Ah. Yes, I'm sorry about that. I take very few students, and usually it is paid by the students' corporate sponsor, or they are quite affluent. Would your company consider sponsoring you?"
"No. No. They are great, but they do not budget for such things. I was hoping I could come here...and ask...no, I apologize. It was not fair of me to ask." She stood in some embarrassment and gathered herself up, hurrying toward the door. He thought he could see moisture and emotion in her beautiful eyes as she turned away from him. He rose, and closed the distance between them before she reached the door.
"Margot, wait! Why is this so important to you? Why this class? Why now? There must be more to it than what you're telling me." He placed his hand over hers and she did not pull away. She looked up at him and met his gaze for a moment, then looked back down at their hands.
"I...I have a husband. But I am not happy. We have two daughters. But I want a better life for them. And for me. But it is impossible. With the certification from this class, maybe I could apply for jobs in America. But I was stupid to come here. Why am I telling you this? Now I am ashamed and stupid. Things cannot change for me."
"Margot...I...I'm sorry. I..." He looked into her big beautiful eyes. They were full of emotion and the loss of hope. He couldn't bear to see her in pain. Without thinking he touched her face and wiped a single tear from her cheek. She trembled to his touch, and looked down again at their hands. Then she ran; out the door and into the night.
Mr. Caine sat back down at his desk, his heart pounding, and considered a moment. Then he picked up the phone...
