Chapter 02:
A gust of cool wind hit Chris' face as he worked, his fingers flying across the keyboard as he crunched the numbers to complete the analysis of the latest products that the company's newest clients had brought into the market. It was from one of the biggest soft drinks manufacturers of the city, so it was safe to say that an accurate analysis would mean he got to keep his job
He turned his head a little and saw his colleague, Ethan, working on the presentation part of the analysis project they had been assigned together. He had met Ethan on his first day of work, and Ethan's friendly and outgoing nature had helped them get close very quickly within the suffocating and tense work culture of the firm.
He heard the sound of chairs moving and turned around to see Ethan slide in next to him on his moving chair, "How's it going bud, ready to throw in the towel?" He looked up at Ethan's face which had that had a mischievous smile on it that implied he was only joking and it was a way to keep up Chris' spirits.
"Well, not yet, man. You know how important this could be to the both of us." Chris replied, looking back at the screen as his hands resumed the typing. He was so close to being done on this report. Then he would get to go home peacefully for the day. If he did complete the analysis part by today, he would finally get to rest without worries after what had been a hectic week up until that point.
"Yeah, man, I know that our jobs are riding on it. But surely we can make time for a coffee break to boost our work rate." Ethan said, wiggling his eyebrows. Chris sighed. When Ethan needed coffee, Chris could never get out of it and had to always accompany him. Better to go with him and get it over with so he could return to work.
"Sure, lets go get that coffee," Chris said and Ethan grinned as if he had won the lottery. They both made their way out of the working cubicles and made their way to the coffee station at the end of the corridor. For being such an addict for caffeine, Ethan was perhaps the worst brewer of coffee in the entire office. Therefore, while Chris brewed their two cups of coffee, Ethan scrolled through, his phone, a small smile playing on his face.
When the coffee was ready, Chris handed Ethan his cup and they both took a sip of it. "This is perfect. You could open up a cafΓ© and I would visit every day, just for your coffee." Chris smiled. He had to admit, getting some coffee into his system was enough for finishing up his grueling task early so he could head home.
"Sure man," he said. "I would like to do that if this corporate struggle ever gets a bit too much for me." He took a sip of his coffee and looked at Ethan. "You know, I think our manager is becoming more human these days."
"What makes you say so?" Ethan asked, looking at him as he rested his back against the counter by the coffee maker.
"Well, for starters, she is no longer scolding people for coming in late to work. Also, she was quick to reprimand the workers if there was any mistake in their work, but now, she only tells them to make necessary corrections as quickly as possible, without berating them."
'Well, I too noticed her changes this week. She seemed quite stuck up before, but she seems to have loosened up much more now," Ethan said. Chris looked at him and felt a peculiar feeling in his gut. It was the first time he had felt this strange when talking to Ethan, which told him that Ethan knew more than he was letting on.
"Is there something You want to tell me man?" he asked, choosing to go the direct way to make the conversation smooth and easy. Ethan smiled at him, and then took the last sip from the coffee mug and set it down on the counter, wiping his mouth with a handkerchief.
"Perhaps a story for later. First, we must finish our work, right?" Chris nodded, but he knew that Ethan was keeping something from him. Regardless, it could wait if it wasn't life threatening. They made their way back to the workstations and Chris sat down before his computer, determined to finish this one.
Another co-worker of his, Yasmin came up to him and tapped him on the shoulder. "Hey, Chris, are you free to join us for a team dinner tonight?" He looked up at her and saw that it was an invitation to more than just dinner. If he hadn't met Louisa already, he would be tempted to take up on the offer Yasmin was implying. But, alas, since Louisa, it seemed his attraction towards other women had decreased down to almost zero.
"I would love to, but I should get some much needed rest after the all-nighters I have put in for this project." Yasmin looked slightly disappointed but was quick to cover it up with a smile. She extended the same invitation to Ethan, who happily accepted her proposal. With her gone, Chris finally locked in to his work and within the next hour or so, his work was finished. He emailed it to the manager and waited for the review to arrive.
He went into the manager's room, hoping that his report was satisfactory so he could leave the firm as soon as possible. "You've done an excellent job Mr. Rhys," Ms. Rumi said, her eyes moving up and down, reviewing his work. "Our clients will be mighty pleased to see that their products are to progress even more in the market during this fall."
"Thank you, Ms. Rumi. I am really happy that you find my work up to the mark," Ethan said as he let out a sigh of relief inwardly. "Since my report is done, I would like to request for a leave for the rest of the working day. I need to go home and get some rest."
