A hot day in August saw me walking in the park. Dog owners were walking their pets. One dog retrieved a frisbee which it returned to its owner, a blond woman probably my mom's age.
With me was my bestie Lynne Phelps, a petite redhead with green eyes and a heart-shaped face. Her hair cascaded past her shoulders. She was casually dressed in a pink criss cross v-neck cold shoulder top with sky-blue cutoffs and sandals.
Lynne and I have a history together. Four years ago we were two 15 year olds. She had a crush on me back in the day so we dated briefly. ON a night in my mancave, actually a basement room in my home, I revealed to her that I'm gay. Her mouth went agape. Shock combined with anger as she stormed out of the house crying.
For several days I had the impression that she hated me. I was bashful about trying to rebuild our relationship until I wasn't.
As the days grew warmer and longer we were talking more and more.
On that hot summer day two months after turning 19 I was preoccupied with a plan and how to impliment it.
"A penny for your thoughts," she said.
I thought for a second then spoke freely.
"I want to do a video. My mom won't mind being in it. We can talk about accepting my sexuality, coming out. Would you like to be part of it?"
"I'd love to," she said.
"Cool, I can get started on production."
"I can shoot the video."
"Catch both of us together in the shoot."
"Of course," said Lynne. "Let me knnow when you're ready."
"I have to make a Youtube account."
"Go for it."
"Lynne if I were straight I would marry you."
The remark prompted her to kiss my cheek.
"We can pretend we're married," she quipped.
Sometimes the gods present gifts. I had never expected my friendship with Keith Holcombe to be any more than that until it became so. An unseasonably warm Saturday in October saw he and I leaving the football stadium after an early season game. As we made our way through the crowd toward the gate I felt his hand brush against me. Seconds later I felt it again.
Wait. is he flirting with me? Maybe he's not straight.
We came to our cars parked end to end in the south lot. There next to the driver side door he revealed his feelings for me.
"Benji. I'm in love with you."
