Amie Ch 04
I wrote the first three chapters about Amie many years ago, but never published them until I began contributing here. I thought chapter 1 was particularly clunky, so I submitted an edited version.
This chapter 4 does not stand alone. Please read the others for background.
To those whose losses turn to joy
------[]----[]------
Amie and I went together for a sonogram. Although Becky and I had tried for years to get pregnant, for whatever reason it wasn't to be.
But here we were, Amie and I, newly married and newly pregnant. We agreed we wanted to know the gender of our baby.
A boy.
We both cried at how real it had become as we watched his image on the screen.
Two weeks later, I was at work and my private line rang.
"Steve!"
She was sobbing. "Something's wrong with my baby! Please come home!"
As I raced out of the building and to my car, I couldn't help but reflect how different this was from earlier times when she had called and teased she was naked. No, this was a cry for help, and my heart was full of foreboding.
Racing through streets, hoping not to get pulled over, I had the garage door open early and pulled in, not bothering to close it.
"Amie?"
"I'm upstairs."
I ran into our bathroom and she was standing there with blood on her legs, sobbing.
"It hurt so bad, Steve, and when I came in here, I started bleeding."
I helped her clean up and get dressed, and we were soon at the hospital, at the ER entrance. I ran in and told a nurse I thought my wife had suffered a miscarriage, but I hadn't used that word yet with her.
"Got it. I'll get a wheelchair."

An hour later we were sitting together in a small room where we could have some privacy and wait to talk with her Ob/Gyn, who had examined Amie a few minutes before.
"Amie, as you've probably guessed, you had a miscarriage. My biggest worry for you is you will blame yourself or ask what you did wrong. I want both of you to listen carefully.
We almost never know what caused a particular miscarriage. Some may happen because the egg did not lodge in a good place after conception, not allowing placenta to form properly.
"In other cases, there was an incorrect number of chromosomes, making the embryo non-viable. This is nature's way of calling for a do-over. The chemistry of reproduction is incredibly complex, and it can produce a wrong result. That could have been caused by a bad copy of DNA in either the egg or the sperm.
"Amie, you don't have any lifestyle issues, such as obesity, malnutrition, smoking, or alcoholism. I've examined you carefully, and I don't see any reason related to your body.
"I know this is a huge disappointment, and it's normal to feel sad and cry. My message to both of you is this: spend time together, get away for a couple of relaxed weekends, and when you're ready, get pregnant again. It is highly likely it will be a normal pregnancy.
"Just remember, your body needs to reset its reproductive cycle, and that may take a few weeks, sometimes longer. If you aren't pregnant within six months, come and see me."

We sat on the sofa at home. I was holding her. There were some tears that evening, but the next morning, when we woke up, her attitude had improved.
"Steve, what I heard yesterday is you aren't supposed to send me any more defective swimmers. So get your shit together, ok?"
We were both laughing.
"I heard something different. My job is to fill you with sperm again. Often."
"Can we afford a weekend in a nice hotel?"
"Sure, but please don't expect to get pregnant yet."
"No, I just want to focus on us and be away from home. Just 'us time.' I want you to hold me in your arms. If we feel like making love, then we should. Nothing forced."
"Let's do that this weekend and, if you can estimate when you think your normal cycle would cause you to be fertile, let's schedule another weekend around that. If you're ready emotionally to get pregnant again."
"Thanks for understanding. I know this is new for both of us, but we'll hang together and get through it."
I loved her positive attitude and how quickly she was able to stop thinking about the past and plan for the future.
------[]----[]------
We had a great weekend at a local hotel. A nice 3-star, across from one of the city parks. Nothing fancy, just us against the world.
We arrived about 7 pm that Friday. Once in our room we took a shower together. No sex in the shower, just holding each other under the warm water.
We dried off and got in bed naked. It was comforting to feel our skin touching in so many places, and apparently that flipped a switch for Amie. I woke up sometime during the night as Amie stroked me to an erection.
"I want you, Steve."
I had a sudden thought, that perhaps she was worried I wouldn't want to have oral sex.
I went down on her and licked and kissed her for a long time, through two orgasms. When I penetrated her, it was in missionary position, so we could enjoy looking into each other's eyes.
I loved watching her face for signs of an impending orgasm. She probably recognized the signs in my face as well, by now.
I reached back for her legs and brought them over my shoulders, then plunged into her again and pounded her to a climax and then myself.
A few minutes later, as we lay together, smiling, it did not surprise me when Amie cracked a joke.
"I feel a hoard of sperm marching around, searching for an egg. You must have given them some discipline. I was going to say you gave them a tongue-lashing, but that's what you gave me."
We lay together, basking in the afterglow of sex. I looked at Amie and saw eyes filled with tears.
"What's wrong, sweetheart?"
"Nothing. I'm happy. How did you know I was worried you would avoid my pussy, after you saw that blood a few days ago?"
"I don't know. That thought occurred to me, so I wanted to spend time reassuring you."
"You're an amazing husband."

The next morning, we got up at 8:30, took a shower together and went down for breakfast.
"Could we go walk in the park today? The weather looks nice."
"That would be nice, but only if I get to kiss you whenever I want."
"I might run."
"That would be unlike you."

Our walk was wonderful. We walked slowly, hand in hand or arm in arm, stopping now and then to kiss.
"Amie, do you remember what happened over there?"
"Was that where we met?"
"It was. I was reading a book after eating the sack lunch I had packed. I looked up and saw you."
"I think our eyes met at the same time."
"Ok, babe, what went through your mind?"
"How handsome you were. What about you?"
"Your legs and your red hair. Intoxicating."
"Neither of us could have seen all that has followed."
"I think the most exceptional thing that has followed is our love."
I saw a tree just off our path, and I backed Amie against it and kissed her. It was a long kiss, but ended when Amie giggled. She motioned over my shoulder and I turned to see an older woman in a heavy coat.
The woman's frown slowly became a smile as she turned and walked on.
We stopped for lunch at one of my favorite downtown places. Amie was busy cracking jokes based on what that older woman was thinking. My favorite was the woman thought I was her husband, kissing some young babe while she wasn't looking.
