After a night of sleeping on the hard ground, I awoke stiff everywhere except for the one place where I'd want it to be. While Amber still slept, I quietly groaned as I stretched my neck. Carefully sitting up, a pop in my shoulder left me feeling a bit lightheaded. After gathering myself, I leaned forwards to stretch my sore back before slowly rolling out from under the blanket. Amber continued to sleep on her side with her hair strewn messily across her pillow. As I slipped from beneath the covers, I tucked the blanket around her before crawling over to the door of the tent.
Amber and I were at her uncle's ranch. A favorite place of both of ours, the sprawling property gave us the freedom to just be ourselves while seemingly isolated from the rest of the world. After leaving work at the end of the day before, she and I had come out here for a weekend away. The first night had not disappointed and, despite a sore start, I was still looking forward to the day ahead.
Still crouching inside the tent, I found a new pair of shorts and a t-shirt in our clothing bag before quietly unzipping the door flap and crawling out. Leaving the flap hanging open, I groaned as I stood for the first time that morning. Wincing as I heard from every sore joint and aching muscle, I stretched my back once more. After finally rolling my neck a couple of times, I gingerly got dressed.
Standing there now in my t-shirt and shorts, I looked out at the scenery around me. From our little campsite atop the knoll, the rolling hills, trees and various ponds were all unchanged from previous trips out here. The familiar surroundings though still managed to appear different as I looked out at them that morning. While it had always been bright and sunny on every other previous trip to the farm, a heavy, broken layer of clouds had moved in overnight. Illuminated only in a few spots by little shafts of sunlight filtering through, the scene appeared bleak but still oddly intriguing.
After taking that initial look around, I threw on my shoes and headed down for my morning trip to the edge of the pond. While I stood there relieving myself, I quietly laughed when I thought back on my visits to this spot the day before. As I shook myself off, I shivered not only as a reflex but also due to an unseasonably cool breeze. Looking out at the trees swaying as I headed back up to the campsite, I thought about what Amber had said the day before. I wasn't sure when, but it definitely looked like we would be in for some rain.
Peeking into the tent when I got back, I saw Amber just beginning to stir. Knowing that she has the ability to sleep well into the morning, I wasn't sure when to expect her to come out. I figured that I could at least provide her a little motivation to leave the comfort of the warm blankets.
Opening the top of the cooler, I was pleased to feel that it was still quite cold. After grabbing some eggs and bacon that I'd packed, I shut the lid and turned on my new camping griddle. The night before, I used it to cook some steak kebabs and hibachi-style fried rice. I was pleased with how it had all turned out and Amber had definitely been impressed with the significant upgrade in our dining situation. If the sex that followed dinner was any indication, I was hoping for a similar reaction to breakfast.
When the griddle was hot, I threw some bacon on one side to cook while cracking and then scrambling the eggs right on the cook-top. Along with the sounds of the cooking food, the breeze out of the west took the enticing aroma in the direction of the tent. As expected, it didn't take long for Amber to begin to stir.
When I heard her moving inside the tent, I looked back and saw her pop her head out from the doorway. With her bare shoulders sticking out, her hair was still a mess as she took a deep breath and groaned, "Oh wow... that smells incredible."
Looking at me, she furrowed her brow and jokingly asked, "Are we expecting company?"
Looking down at my clothes, I used the spatula to point at the food and said, "You know what they say about cooking bacon..."
Amber just winked and ducked back into the tent. While I went back to cooking our breakfast, she emerged a moment later in another pair of shorts and a purple tank top. Turning my head and seeing her now dressed, I hollered, "Hey, I'm cooking! What's your excuse?"
Coming up behind me, Amber kissed my neck and said, "Just think of it like unwrapping a present."
Tilting my head back, I gave her a kiss when she bent over to meet me. Turning back towards the griddle and seeing that our food was about done, I reached for our plates while Amber hurried off to take care of her morning needs.
I had just finished pouring some orange juice when Amber walked back up the hill. Taking a seat on the blanket, she smiled her thanks when I handed her a plate. Sitting down beside her, I leaned over to grab our cups and handed her one. Laughing as she looked into the cup, she said, "I forgot we packed this! I just figured you were going to mix it with vodka." Giving me another little kiss, she said, "Babe, really... thanks."
Smiling back at her, I just shrugged and took a bite of the eggs. Having cooked along with some of the bacon fat, despite the unusual setting for making breakfast, they were maybe the best eggs I'd ever eaten. A second later, I heard Amber chuckle before groaning, "Oh fuck, honey..."
Looking over at her with a proud smile, I asked, "Turned out alright, huh?"
Holding her hand over her mouth after taking a bite of some hot bacon, she just laughed and nodded her head. Then, taking a sip of her juice, she wiped her mouth and said, "You're gonna have to cook with that thing at home."
Shrugging, I said, "Or we can just come out here more often."
Taking another bite, Amber just gave me a little wink. Then, looking around, she said, "Looks like that fucking app was right though."
Looking out at the heavy, grey clouds littering the sky, I asked, "When is it supposed to start?"
With a shrug, she replied, "I think we've got a couple hours."
We weren't planning on going back home until the next day. Having looked forward to another full day and night out there, neither of us was eager to pack up and leave. Determined to see it out, when we finished eating, we decided to go ahead and put the rain cover on the tent just to be prepared.
While not a perfect design, it covered much more of the tent and appeared more effective than many of the other such setups I'd seen. After stretching and securing the tarp with bungee cords, the sides were completely covered. Only the front with its door was still somewhat exposed. Amber and I spent the next few minutes packing away some loose food and picking up some random trash. Happy that we'd done all we could, I came up behind her and wrapped my arms around her waist. Playfully rubbing up against her, I asked, "So... what's the first thing on your agenda for today?"
Putting her hands on mine and holding my arms in place around her, she said, "You're gonna think I'm crazy but... after last night, I really need to go freshen up..."
Surprised that she was even entertaining the idea, I asked, "You sure?"
We both laughed, remembering that the only option for a shower out here was a hose behind the garage. The one time that we'd used it previously, the water was so cold that we'd never bothered doing it again. Shrugging shyly, Amber shook her head and said, "No but... how about you just trust me... I really don't want to have to explain..."
Figuring that I'd best take her word for it, I nodded my head towards the truck. Slumping her shoulders in melodramatic defeat, she reluctantly got our bag of clothes from the tent and followed me over. Leaving our shoes behind, we hopped into the truck and began slowly making our way back towards the garage building off in the distance. A moment later, we pulled up onto the concrete pad out back, which had once been used for washing the various pieces of machinery at the ranch.
While Amber dug through our travel bag, I went and got the water started on the hose. Letting it run freely for a few seconds, I just had horrible flashbacks to the icy sting of the water the last time we used it. Pulled back to the present when I saw Amber walking my way, I figured that I might as well test it out to see what we were in for. Putting my finger into the stream, I must've had a curious look on my face. Tilting her head, Amber asked, "Oh no, what's wrong?"
Smiling back at her, I shook my head and said, "It's actually not that bad." Before she got too excited, I qualified it with, "It's still not bathwater; but it's definitely not ice cold."
Clearly believing that I was trying to set her up for a trap, she froze in place and shook her head. Laughing she said, "Oh hell no, I don't believe that shit for a second."
When I tried to protest my case, she just laughed and said, "Oh yeah? Then you go first."
Setting the hose down with the water still flowing out onto the concrete pad, I pulled my shirt up over my head and then dropped my shorts. As I kicked them out of the way, Amber saw that I hadn't been wearing any underwear and groaned, "Well, you could've fucking told me."
Smiling and shrugging as I picked up the hose, I watched Amber strip off her clothes. Pulling down her panties, she cringed before tossing them in the back of the truck, saying, "I don't think we'll need those anymore."
