Kate squirmed nervously in her seat as the stern looking woman across from her studied her, up and down. She looked the picture of innocence in the white sun dress that she wore for the interview.
"And what qualifications do you have?" The interviewer asked, pursing her lips.
"I've waitressed in several establishments before." Kate said, overcoming her nerves and managing to bring herself to look her interview in the eye.
"And you are aware of the uniform that will be involved?" Kate nodded. "And, one final question before we can hire you for the night... It's a little unorthodox, but, then, this is an unorthodox job. Are there any significant others who might object to this?"
"No, I'm single." Kate said, frowning slightly at the odd question.
"Well, I can't see anything wrong with you. I'll just need to take a photo of you to send to the client." Kate nodded, and smiled for the photo. "We'll be in touch." The interviewer said, as she pulled the SD card out of the camera.
Kate nodded again, and thanked the interviewer before leaving the room.
As she slid into her car, she glanced at the rearview mirror to check her makeup. Naturally, she looked just as perfect as she had when she'd arrived.
Kate was a natural beauty. She had fair skin, and dark brown hair, which had a red sheen to it in the sun. What captivated most people, however, were her stunning blue eyes. She was a firm believer in the minimal makeup strategy. It enhanced her large eyes, making them the centre of attention, and added a couple of shades and a nice sheen to her lips.
Smiling at her reflection, she fixed it back up, and left, heading home.
Her phone bleeped when she pulled into her driveway, and Kate glanced at the text. It was Josie again.
Josie was her best friend and roommate, as well as the reason Kate desperately needed more money. As Kate scrolled through the text, Josie appeared at her car window with a grin on her face.
"Did you get the job?" Josie asked, as she helped Kate with the groceries that were in the boot of her car. Kate had gone shopping before her interview, almost using up the last of her money to get enough food to last them for the month.
"I don't know, Josie." Kate sighed. "They said they'd get back to me." Josie nodded, and the two made their way up to the apartment that Josie had promised they'd pay off in no time. The one that she said was absolutely necessary for them.
As she closed the door behind her, Kate had to admit that it did have a great view.
The first few months had been good. Plenty of parties, with all of Josie's friends. Kate's friends weren't the wild partying sort. Kate wouldn't have gone, either, if she hadn't been living with Josie.
"I've found a couple of auditions." Josie said as she put he groceries away. Kate flinched. Josie was so determined that she'd find an acting job that she wouldn't allow herself to stoop to something else. Which meant that Kate, who wanted to be a writer, had to look for all of the tough jobs that would actually earn money.
"Josie-"
"Kate, come on, I'm young, I'm gorgeous, and I can act. They'll want me. I'll be rich in no time." Josie said. Kate sighed and nodded.
"Just, if you don't get any of them, can you please look for something else?" Josie rolled her eyes.
"Sure." She crossed her fingers behind her back as she smiled at her best friend. Kate smiled back.
With the groceries away, Kate pulled her laptop towards her, and opened up the novel she was editting, as Josie flopped on the couch and turned the tv on. They stayed like that until Kate's phone lit up. Kate grinned as she answered it. Josie muted the tv and watched as Kate's face lit up as she talked.
"What's up?" Josie asked when Kate hung up.
"I got the job." Kate said, feeling a wave of relief wash over her.
"How much?"
"Enough for a few months." Josie frowned
"A few months?"
"It's a one off gig, but it pays a lot." Josie nodded.
The tv was unmuted, and Kate went back to editting her novel, as she thought about the job she had to do the next day.
*
Kate woke up to an email filled with very specific instructions, which she read over thoroughly, and a contract, which she did not.
Good Morning, Kate.
We have not yet spoken, but I am the client who hired you to waitress for my event this evening. Your uniform will be provided upon your arrival. Your measurements have already been provided to me, that it will fit will not be an issue.
Kate wondered briefly how he managed to get the measurements. She hadn't given them to the interviewer yesterday.
You will be required from 3pm, until 3pm tomorrow, a full twenty four hours. Before you arrive, you will need to get ready.
You must be completely hairless from the neck down. Any unsightly hairs on your face are to be removed, as well. You will style your hair, and leave it down, and apply neat makeup. While you do not require your clothes for the evening, you will be dressed appropriately.
There will be a lot of strange requests tonight. Your job, is to say yes. Hand the following legal document to me when you arrive, signed and initialed where appropriate. You will receive ten percent of the money upon arrival, and the rest when you leave.
Looking forward to seeing you promptly at 3,
- J. Arone
Kate glanced through the legal document only looking for where she had to initial and sign. At this point, she didn't care what she had to do. If she had to get on her knees and blow people, or lift up the tiny skirt that was attached to her uniform, it would be worth it to get the money. She needed it. Even if Josie couldn't manage to get a gig, the money would get them through for long enough for Kate to find another job. And, since Josie had finally agreed to look for normal work if she couldn't get an acting gig, that would be two people looking for actual work to get them through.
Glancing at the clock, Kate realised she had five hours until she needed to leave for the job. She decided to get a head start on some of the things she needed to do. With the promise of cash so close, she used the last of her money on a salon trip, getting everything waxed.
Completely smooth, Kate returned home to an annoyed Josie. She'd been rejected from another gig.
Kate consoled her, telling her that she'd get the next one, going through the same motions she always did when Josie got rejected. Whether it was from a gig, or from a guy, Josie needed the same consolations, or she'd want to cut her hair, and lock herself in her room.
She needed to be told that she was beautiful, and talented, and that everyone would want her. That that company was stupid.
When Kate was free of that, she only had two hours left before she had to leave. She showered, and blow dried her hair, before tousling it so it fell in gorgeous waves down her back. She lightly applied makeup, going through her usual regime, making sure her eyes popped, and her lips were accentuated, and she had a soft blush to her cheeks.
"Wow, don't you clean up nicely?" Josie whistled as Kate stood before her, this time in a yellow sun dress, that accentuated her cleavage, and showed off her long legs. Kate blushed under her makeup, and grabbed two energy drinks from the fridge. She tossed one to Josie as she quickly put on her wedges, which only made her legs seem even longer.
"I've got that job tonight." Kate said, checking her makeup again, and deciding whether or not to wear any jewellery.
"You sure that's a job, and not a date?" Josie said.
Kate laughed. "I wish. I probably won't get to eat until it's over. I'm going to need another of these on the way." She took a long swig of her energy drink.
"Wow, that's a long job. You sure it's worth it?"
"Worth enough to pay our mortgage and other bills for the next four months? Absolutely."
