The Story
"So what is your reasoning for wanting to adopt an eighteen year old girl?" Grace Larson asked. She was a twenty-five year old social worker employed by an orphanage where she helped to look after the girls as well as searching to find them homes.
Grace herself was an orphan, and one who hadn't been adopted until she had turned eighteen, so she had sympathy for her young adult charges who having turned eighteen, would be left to fend for themselves if they weren't adopted soon. The other orphanage staff took to calling these girls 'no-hopers' (not to their faces of course!) but this had only encouraged Grace to make it her personal mission to get adoptive parents for them all, and so far she felt she had done very well, having already united Cassidy, Colina, Alix, Madi, and Bibi with their new families, while Renate was soon to also move in with her new mother, and Mikaela's adoption was close to being finalised too.
However despite these successes, Grace wasn't one to rest on her laurels, which was why she was in a café with a woman who had expressed interest in adopting specially an eighteen year old. She was a Sicilian woman name Gia, thirty-eight years old, with lightly tanned white skin, dark brown hair, a slender body, and an element of fierceness from her straight fringe, vivid red lipstick, and sharp business clothing.
However, having been shown the files of all the adult girls at the orphanage, Gia was struggling to make a selection so Grace, a little worried she would lose interest (they were meeting on her lunchbreak so the woman would be returning to her nearby office soon), was probing for what she actually wanted... as from experience she found her clients, even though on the surface they all wanted the same thing, that being to adopt an eighteen year old daughter, often had different things in mind.
For example there had been Zafira and Sarah, a lesbian couple, where Zafira had enthusiastically explained how she wanted a cutie to shower with motherly affection, but Grace had noticed how Sarah seemed less keen so she chose Cassidy, reasoning she was a shy girl who'd love having such an adoring mommy, but would be quiet and well-behaved so as not to disrupt Sarah's household. Grace was confident that Zafira would adore Cassidy, and was also certain that, despite her sternness, Sarah too would be won over by the teen's subservient meekness.
Or there was Rhian who saw adopting an eighteen year old as a shortcut to becoming a grandmother, which was something that despite being just thirty-eight, she found she yearned to be. Grace had chosen Madi, a girl who often tried to 'mother' her fellow orphans and still looked after her doll, so would likely be keen at the idea of being a young mother, thus being the best pick for what Rhian wanted. Therefore it wasn't just the prospective parents whom Grace considered the interests of, but also the girls, and she always made sure she put each teen into the home where they'd be happiest, rather than just throwing them anywhere to just get them out the orphanage's door.
"In truth, I wasn't particularly interested in adopting a daughter..." Gia admitted in response to Grace's question. "I always wanted a dog however I'm awfully allergic to animal fur, and besides I'm too busy with my career to care for one full time, so thought maybe this could be a compromise. She'll of course get a secure home and support from me as a mother, however was thinking perhaps in return the girl could act a little like a pet. You know, being obedient, giving me some affection, and things like that..."
Grace was surprised a little by the confession, not having expected the woman to 'just' be wanting a daughter as a substitute to not having a pet, as usually it was the other way round with pets being the substitutes!
"Oh, so you want a girl who will be obedient, affectionate..." Grace summarised, then added her own adjective to prove to Gia she understood what the woman wanted. "...and loyal? You want a daughter who is mature enough to care for herself when you're working, but will show you affection when you are home, will fit into your routine without fuss, and will look to you for guidance, being an obedient follower rather than a disruptive rebel?"
"Yes, you really understand me, that's exactly what I want!" Gia smiled, and Grace knew that she had earnt the woman's trust that she would pick her out the perfect girl.
"You do understand that like dogs, daughters aren't just for Christmas?" Grace joked, though the question was serious, and Gia nodded.
"Great, then I think I have the perfect girl for you!" Grace grinned, and passed the woman the file of the orphan she felt would tick all of her boxes. It wasn't just Gia she was thinking of, but also the girl however she felt the pair would be the ideal match!

It was lunchtime in the orphanage, and Amber was sat eating with several other 'no hopers'. She was an eighteen year old girl with light blonde hair and a pretty face with a sprinkling of blonde freckles across her cute little nose, cheeks, and forehead, that made her look very wholesome. She wasn't plump but she had a soft body, and her breasts were buxom, being the largest out of all the orphans. The girl had often wondered whether her large breasts, which had developed quite early, were partly why she was never adopted, as her bustiness just didn't fit with a prospective parent's vision of an adopted daughter.
"Oh, I forgot to get a spoon." Odette, a skinny petite blonde sighed after she had sat down at the table. She was just about to rise again when Amber stood up.
"Don't worry, I'll fetch you one. I was just going up to refill my cup anyway." She said helpfully then went over to the water machine, filling up her cup with chill water, then grabbing a spoon for Odette from the cutlery tray.
"Thanks!" Odette smiled when Amber returned, and the other girl grinned back, always happy to fetch something for someone though she wasn't sure why she enjoyed it so much... nevertheless it had became such a trait that everyone teased her that it was her love language and some of the other girls took advantage of it slightly. Though Amber didn't mind, and she was always happy to fetch anything someone needed that they had left in the dorm room, or to go to the kitchen to grab a girl a snack if she was hungry. She even enjoyed fetching people, and often was the first to go to Miss Larson to tell her when Mikaela was crying, even though she thought the girl was a bit of a silly cry-baby.
After lunch, the girls all went to one of the rooms which the orphanage used as a classroom for a lesson with their tutor. "Oh dear, I left the marked essays in staff room."
"I'll run and get them!" Amber volunteered and left the classroom, passing Miss Larson, who sometimes acted as a teaching assistant, as she was coming in.
Grace smiled to herself, certain that she had made the right decision to match Amber with Gia. Since the meeting with the Sicilian woman in the café, she had confirmed Mikaela's adoption date, as well as arranged for two more girls, Anabelle and Elsa, to soon join their new families she had found them. However she had just received an email from Gia to confirm the day that Amber could move in with her, so looked forward to telling the teen the good news after the tutoring session.

Despite it being Saturday, Amber was awakened by her alarm clock, and she got out of bed, excited for another day she would get to spend with her new mother in their own special way. She had been in her new home for a few weeks now, though having her own bedroom, rather than a dorm room shared with several other girls, still felt a little bit of a novelty as did everything else which came courtesy of having a mother who earnt a good wage! These included lovely meals, all her new clothes, and their large detached house at No. 34 Sapphire Lane, which was on a corner of the green square which the cul-de-sac ended in.
She now attended a nearby all-girl private high school called Ginerva Academy where several of the other girls from the orphanage, who had been adopted before her, also attended so it wasn't like she had been flung into a neighbourhood of strangers (in fact, it seemed like all the former 'no hopers' had ended up in either Sapphire Lane or Lavender Lane). Though rather than sticking with just the familiar faces, Amber had made several new friends as well.
However the most important change was that she now had a mother! She had never expected that a hot Sicilian woman would be her mom, though in truth she had been beginning to give up hope she would ever be adopted, however she certainly felt lucky. Gia was caring and authoritative, always making sure she had everything she needed to do her best at high school, so Amber made sure to work hard to award her by getting good grades, as well as helping her with household chores since on weekdays, the woman did long hours at the office.
