Monday 12th October 1998, Portsmouth Museum
I feel very nervous suddenly as a man approaches me. He is wearing a check sports jacket, a black shirt and blue denim jeans. I breathe a sigh of relief as he welcomes me. I stand awkwardly clutching my folders and notebook to my chest.
"Hi Michelle. Thanks for arriving so promptly. We can make a start down here." He leads me down to what I am told is the records room.
"Thanks Professor King."
The room he leads me into is impressive.
"There are a lot of records. Its incredible."
"Yes it will be hard work but you will learn a lot. It's nice to see someone of your age be interested in the arts rather than doing what is usual I guess for your fellow students."
A compliment, that's nice. I relax a bit more. Still holding my folders and books. There is not really a suitable place to set them down.
"Oh I have always been a bit of a book worm. I do love history. It feels quite humbling to be amongst these records. Gosh and it gets very warm doesn't it."
And it is getting warm, very warm. I am just wearing a bra under my sweater but it's still very hot.
"Yes, I am sorry. The air con does not appear to be working. You may have read we had an important shipment of items the other day. I will show you later some of the items. It will make it more real for you."
More real? I guess so. I notice him take a longer look at me. In particular his eyes, blue.
"Thank you. You must know a lot. Sorry that sounds silly, of course you do. But I mean did you discover anything from the new exhibits."
This is my nerves kicking in. What a silly thing to say. At least I think I recovered well.
"There a lot of items. It's a particular area of Egyptian mythology that is not well known. It's a massive subject of course but I have been researching this area for many years".
We pass a display mirror I stops and fix my hair adjusting the folders in my arms awkwardly as I do so. I follow him into what he tells me is the exhibits area.
"WoW!"
It's an automatic reaction. What did he say about making it real? This is what he meant. I love it.
"This was one of the main objects. It's not a sarcophagus but was buried with important items as part of their rituals. What's unique about this one and in my particular research is it is based around the Egyptian god Min".
Min? The name does not ring a bell at all. I have to be honest.
"I have not heard of him."
Great! I thought things had started well but now he finds my knowledge lacking. I try and recover being put off guard.
"I have had a lot of reading on Egyptian history but the name does not ring a bell for me."
"Don't worry, for most it won't. Tutankhamen is of course well known as is probably Hapshepsuit. I am sure you know she was a female ruler."
A let off. Great. Now I am on familiar ground and feel bold enough to make a joke.
"Girl power at such an early period but yes I know all about her."
I see he smiles at my reply. Great, at least he has a sense of humour. I listen to his voice. It's a Scottish voice. Pleasant. An accent I can't quite place, almost Irish but no it's a Scottish voice I hear.
"In Egypt the lineage was through the maternal line not the paternal as in Europe's history. Hence the practice of son's marrying their mothers. Incest was quite common."
Incest? He's quite right of course. At least I know he is not embarrassed about mentioning such things.
"Yes I had read that, it seems shocking but it was such a long time ago."
I feel I can't quite let the comment go without saying something.
"That's quite a grown up response if you don't mind me saying."
"Thank you."
Well that was a nice surprise. A compliment. Suddenly I feel much more relaxed.
"Here are some of the artefacts."
He picks up and hands me one of the statues.
It is of his head and body only, no arms. What is striking is clearly the erect penis which is nearly half the length of the full statue.
"Oh my goodness!"
I don't really know what to say, or where to look. I'd feel the same as if he'd just handed me a vibrator. To be honest too with the heat and all I can feel my panties getting wet at the crotch.
"HaHa yes. Min was a fertility god. As you might imagine it was quite important in the river valley. The practices developed very complex rituals and engaged in human sacrifice."
Again. He speaks to me bold as brass. Very matter of fact. I like it. Again I recover as it needs a suitable response.
"Shocking."
He continues talking. I note he walks with his hands clasped, almost as if he is trying to conceal something.
"But not if you think as a ruler. The pyramids for example were built by thousands of slaves."
He points out a scene on one of the stone tablets.
"These were seven Priests that were sacrificed in this particular ritual."
He shows me another stone tablet.
