He opened the car door roughly, set his bag down on the floor, and sat in the low-lying seat with a thud. He yanked the door shut with a wham. Renee never showed any respect around Steph, and it was part of what made him irresistible. He showed no need for her whatsoever. "Drive." he commanded, checking his feathered raven locks in the vanity mirror. Steph bit her lower lip with as she pushed the key into the ignition, her own phallic power source. The finely tuned engine roared to life. She thrilled to the vibration of the stick shift, grabbing the rod and engaging the gears. She loved the way her machine felt. She loved the power of it. The sleek lines and smooth surfaces were enough to make her heart race. She rolled down the street. She caught his blue eyes watching the passing suburban banality in the rearview mirror as she scanned the road.
"Turn left." he said without looking at her. She did as he bid, steering out of town. The asphalt rolled past fallow farmers fields and ancient trees. They sped toward the winding climb of the escarpment as the afternoon sun glared behind them. They came to a four-way stop where the pavement ended. Sunken tire tracks on the gravel ahead suggested the continuation of the road. Steph stopped at the sign, looking over at Renee in askance. She blew a strand of her dark hair out of her hazel eyes, looking between Renee and the mirrors. She didn't want to bring her low riding sports car on the loose stone path, and hoped he had another destination in mind.
"What are you waiting for?" Renee asked, still refusing to look at her.
"Do I have to? I just got it detailed." Steph asked. Renee reached into his breast pocket and produced a cigarette. Lighting it seemed the only answer he would give as he looked back out the passenger window. He rolled the glass down further and blew a swirling cloud into the atmosphere. Steph put the car into first gear and eased up the slope.
She kept to the low gear against the climb. Her majestic vehicle crawled along, the occasional ping of a stone against the underside. Each strike made her wince, but she dared not refuse Renee's command. She knew that being a good girl was the only way to get his regard. She craved his focus, to sweep away all the other thoughts in his complicated mind and become his world, if only for a time.
They came to the plateau of the escarpment. The view extended for miles around. The ordered squares of expansive farms gave way to the rising suburbs and the city beyond in one direction. To the other, the land fell away to the vast lake into which sunset was falling. It was a breathtaking sight. Though she'd grown up in town, Steph had never been up this little used road to witness the sunset. "There." Renee pointed to a wide shoulder which offered no obstructions to the view. Steph dutifully pulled her car over and parked it.
