Thomas, Francesca and Dan walked the three women back to his house. Once inside, Beth and Hailey formally declared their intention to join the life Anne had entered.
Beth confessed that giving herself up to her husband was a form of atonement. Her voice broke and Anne saw tears in her eyes.
Shortly after they were married he was called by the army for a year of service; when he returned she was six months' pregnant with Hailey. There was no hiding her indiscretion, and her daughter's hair reminded him of it every day.

Dan said nothing but smiled briefly at this. Beth would get her wish, Anne was sure.
